Why doesn`t PD get the credit they deserve from Sony?

Let's not forget Kaz is VP of SCE which shows some acknowledgement from Sony, and so much more as other users have said. The extreme dogmatic push for PD is over the top really.

Uncharted 2 won Game of the Year awards. A billion of them. If anything but Uncharted 2 is considered the flagship PS3 title, it's a travesty.
I completely get what you mean, but

...We need exclusive games that differentiates our platform, Gran Turismo has always been our flagship title and I am sure it is going to be that again.

highest selling PS/3 game. Uncharted is too new to be considered PlayStation's flagship title even though it's obviously the better game. I don't consider GT to be a game though. It'd be cool to consider it one. The gameplay has always been too straightforward without any serious video game aspects to it.

No one buys racing sims unless they like cars. I bet a large quantity of gt5 games sold game in a ps3 bundle

"[Sony] doesn`t support PD the way they deserve"

Goodness me

Sony have done nothing but support Polyphony Digital. Sony gave PD plenty of time to craft GT5, together with a nice budget. They sanctioned an expansion, and seemingly a hiring drive. PD are also likely to be the first studio anywhere in the world to get their hands on PS4 tech.

If you're basing your reasoning on marketing, firstly, Sony are ****ing awful at marketing, and second, other titles probably need much more promotion than GT.

You also have to remember that while significantly increasing the headcount to that of Turn 10 levels would be nice for gamers, it decreases the margin for Sony, as the cost of making the game dramatically increases.

I suspect pd already have dev tools for ps4, as do a few other big devs. Just my guess but if were looking at around 18 months for a ps4 release then it takes that amount of time to make a game. Anyway back on topic... I am surprised Sony dident mention pd at e3 even if it was just for gt academy, its a showcase for Sony and gt, other companys just don't do anything like gt academy so should in my opinion been mentioned.

Maybe Kaz keeps Sony in the dark almost as much as their fans. I mean when you have people within Sony being quoted on video that there is more content coming for GT5 and then we don't really see that.

Maybe Sony is just putting up with the way Kaz does business. Since they have seen how much money these games bring in they probably have little to no idea what is actually going on with the development process except for what Kaz tells them. Just a hunch though of course.

Each game has been a huge success, but why is it that Sony doesn`t advertise GT as much as games like Uncharted or God of War or doesn`t supports PD the way they deserve, with more ressources so they can keep up with T10 which have way more people working on the Forza games. Also, I can`t stand how much praise they give to Quantic Dream whichs only little success was Heavy Rain (A story driven game full of plotholes), while PD doesn`t even get mentioned at the E3.

Show me a source of information regarding how much Sony does and does not spend on PD please. Until then, all of this is only speculation. You have no idea how much or how little Sony spends on PD.

The reason why PD was not mentioned at E3 is because there is no news with PD involved right now. There is a rumour going around on these forums that GT6 is just around the corner, but there is nothing substantial to back such an assumption up.

What exactly do you want them to do? They pushed GT5 big style when it was released, it's now 18 months later, with nothing new from PD to show at E3 what do you expect? "Oh by the way PD are still working on GT games. Moving on...."

I think he means resources to work on the game and marketing, AND FREAKING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. Now they are trying to fight with knifes against a machine gun (MS-t10).

I think alot of you missunderstood me (well english is not my first language).

Just take a look at T10/MS: Forza 4 gets one big DLC after another, they even managed to get Porsche licenses.
Right now most casual players think of GT as the unfinished buggy game GT5 was at its release (Remember the line, your only good as your last race was). Its unlikely that GT6 will sell as well as GT5P or GT5 did. Its not only up to PD to deliver, but GT6 needs alot of marketing so people forget GT5 1.0.
As a GT fanboy and loyal PD customer I just wish that Sony gives them more ressources (to those that they already gave PD enough and let them develop a game for 5 years; they deserved it with GT3/4 which were only outsold by GTA San Andreas), so PD can employ more people and buy licenses we fans want so much (Porsche, DTM) or atleast secure exclusive deals with other manufacturers like Ferrari/Pagani so T10 and EA can`t use the cars anymore. Well, just dreaming...

edit: Exactly what Raitziger said.

As I said, while it would be nice for us GT fans to see PD expand and to be given the level of resources enjoyed by Turn 10, doing so would mean the cost of making the game would dramatically increase.

With "only" about 140 people making the game, Sony get a bigger margin when the game sells. If PD suddenly doubled in size to 300 say, you're doubling the cost of running the studio, as you're employing 160 more people who need to be paid, given a place to work, and all the utility costs that go along with it. That drastically reduces the return when the game sells.

I'd also add that I think Kaz is also eligible for some "blame" if you like, as he is seemingly implacably opposed to outsourcing, as seen with GT PSP. There are plenty of areas with GT that other Sony utility studios could take care of, but Kaz will probably never allow that.

The Porsche issue it too complicated for anyone to understand, but it almost certainly has little to do with money, especially with Sony spending $60m on GT5. The only way money could have been issue I suspect was if EA were demanding something absolutely unrealistic.

I'm certain we have another thread specifically about exclusive deals, so I'll just say this: that is an absolutely awful idea. What EA does with Porsche is highly disappointing, but the last thing we need in the racing game industry is the idea of exclusive rights to certain marques spreading.

On topic: I'll agree with the sentiment that GT just doesn't need the amount of advertising money that other games do. For better or worse, it sells on name. And considering the budget was closer to $80 million (with speculation as high as $100 million), and the way GT5 chomped down on release dates/windows like candy, I could understand why Sony doesn't have a big marketing budget for it. Plus, at this point, it is quite old. The fact the studio had years of essential free-reign to develop the game shows Sony gives them a wide berth.

I think GT5 sold more than 10m units, since charts aren't updated (websites say they are but it's been the very same number since last year), they don't consider gt5 xl, and most importantly don't take into account GT5 Prologue.

Problem is that even in the case you also have to consider all games of each franchise, and not games separately. By franchise GT5 goes from the top5 spot to...20 probably or more.

Funniest thing i've ever seen you say.

One of Sonys Flagship Titles, GT has always been the Playstations show off title...For example GTHDC Free download in 2006-2007. A pure marketing tool to show off what was then NextGen graphics.

Have you seen how much Sony endorse GT?

PD got plenty of love from Sony when GT5 was released and at e3 2010 before it came out (Still waiting for that game), if there is nothing new to show what is there to promote?

I aggree with you, but I just try to see it from PD/Sony point of view. Each GT gamer they loose to the FM series could mean one console less sold.
Actually they already have a very close relationsship with Nissan, so its more or less impossible.

But let me dream on:
For example, if PD get a exclusive deal with Ferrari/Fiat (like when a new model releases, selling it as DLC with other special Ferraris, novitec rosso tuned ones etc.) which also prohibits other studios to use those cars, it would be a major deciding factor for the PS4.

I know alot of people who choose Shift2 above GT5 because of the strange Porsche deal.

Only recently has it started to be bundled at a larger rate than it has before. Earlier on in GT5's life it wasn't even close to being bundled heavily, but it was a little.

Yea. Gt5 =/= game? :D
Is it a game like the NFS series is, or Forza? No. Is it a game like an FPS? Is it like Metal Gear? Is it like LittleBigPlanet? Is it like Wii Tennis? :)

GT5 is hardly a game compared to everything else. The closest thing to a game this has is the Drift Trials and the X2000 cars, and the fact that we get credits and levels. There are no "true" gamey aspects to GT5 when compared to true video games.

What on earth have you been smoking?

Sony doesn't want 1 single great developed game, such as GT5, because then no one else would play the other 50 thousand game titles, and therefore lose revenue.

That's the problem, when you're as big as Sony, EA, etc.

Kaz cannot split from Sony, too much confidentiality agreement.

I am willing to bet, that KAz purposely introduces New bugs with every patch, as it is the only way he can get "permission" to continue to get support from the Sony dynasty, to prolongue his love of GT5 for all of us.

Kaz will not split from Sony because PD is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony and Sony hold all the rights to GT as a result.

Also I would be pretty much willing to bet my house that no matter how well developed the GT series gets its not going to take sales from FPS's, its a totally different core audience.

Is it a game like the NFS series is, or Forza?

Yes it is.

They only thing that Sony havent done for PD is to sacrifice a goat or something.
Sony put a lot of weight on GT5 with PS3, they gave them a huge amount of money, they gave them a lot of time...(again and again and again)...and at the end they released a half finished game with zillion problems.

They've released bundles,Collectors Version. Signature Version, Platinum Version, XL-Version, they were giving DLC codes with Edge shaving foam, Sponsored several racing cars, etc etc.... they've even changed the background of PSN to push the 1st DLC...(a dlc that had and caused many problems/complains.... and at the end it wasnt something new in reality, it was just a bunch of RM's.)

OK GT it may be one of the flagships for PS, it may have brought them back a lot of money , but it is embarrassing after a point.
Sony had people apologising for the numerous delays, they had people saying "New DLC every 2 months" ....and now they look like like fools.
Patch after patch and the game gets more problems than fixes.

smh
Kaz: I think that will include cars and tracks that we’ll be releasing maybe once every two months or so from here on out.

Yes it is.
Not exactly. I'm not saying it's a good thing. One big example: I'd prefer if GT5 has Top Gear soccer even though I won't use it, others will. iRacing, it's not a "true" game TO ME, because it's missing the gamey aspects that other car games have. When comparing that to the GT series, you can say GT is more of a game. iRacing focuses on race cars while GT is more about normal road cars.

@another_jakhole: last DLC pack was released at mid January, almost 5 months ago. Turn10 released 90 cars in the same period of time.
