Why GT never had skidmarks?

Q: Why should GT5 get skidmarks?
A: It happens in real life.

And i don't think it's that hard to implement or simulate.

Anyone knows why GT never supported skidmarks?

Maybe if we whine about it we will get it lol. I mean damage + skidmarks will be stunning.

It probably IS quite hard to implement realistically - dynamic calculations of speed, angle, brake power, tire factors - I'm sure if it was easy it would have been done. They aren't just lazy lol.

I really want skid marks also, but thing is in most games the marks only last a short while and fade away. Kaz would probably not be happy with that. I don't know if it uses up a lot of texture memory or not, but the PSP version doesn't seem like it's gonna get them. Maybe, it's because Kaz thinks it will encourage people to play GT as if it were an arcade game, we can't even do donuts in GT for some weired reason either.
I do know that smoke effects eat up a lot of system performance however, not sure about skidmarks, which is probably why the smoke effects in GT5P are not very dense and don't last long. I do think skidmarks and better smoke will greatly add to the drift events however. I don't know why Kaz seems to want to make everything in GT look pristine, they should take a leaf out of Project gothams book, when it comes to immersion and atmosphere in many respects, including the sounds.

Why GT never had skidmarks?? Because then you'll have people like myself who will pull a massive 5 minute burnout to see if we can pop the tyres next and trying to write our own names on the circuit. :mischievous:

Just to let you know, you can't pop them in GT3 or GT4 but you CAN wear them down to reds very very nicely. ;)

skid marks are a waste of time, in other games they just disappear after a few seconds.

So whats the big deal?? who freakin cares about stupid skid marks

Id say the reason they never bothered with them is the fact that having them appear and then disappear is worse than them never appearing in the first place

Hahaha I would probably do that too in a 1970 Chevelle SS 454. :D

It doesn't matter if they're gonna disappear later, as long as im drifting i want to see results.

Neither are the lights on the car. On Special Stage Route 5, in GT4 (or any night track for that matter) headlights were useless, because apart from being nice and all that, they didn't serve a real purpose. They were just a decoration, they didn't iluminated the track at all...

Bring on reverse lights! :D

Let's carry on the trend. Neither are 200'000 polly models, fancy interiors, car colour, nice environments. But hey whose to say that they don't improve the game?

We shouldnt be hoping and asking P.D for skidmarks. Skidmarks are the least you would expect from the supposed best driving game ever. It ridiculous that we have to make a thread and lose sleep over something as simple as skid marks. If P.D doesnt impliment it then they are just lazy as every other racing game has it, even PS1 games!!

Skid marks are really not that, important to me. Besides if they stayed on the track, sooner or later you are not going to see them. Beacuse the corners would be all black! I do want turn signals, so people will know i'm passing them!:sly:

Yes PD are lazy, thats the one 👍

They obviously would rather concentrate on other areas of the game. skid marks look completely unrealistic in the games that have them. PD choose to not have them because they can't do it to their standard, cant we just leave it at that?

And the only time you get big dirty black skid marks is from doing a huge burnout. Just spinning out on a race track would hardly leave a mark.

we can't even do donuts in GT for some weird reason either.

Is this a type-o?

I do donuts. I do donuts in sub 300hp cars, with race tires at that.edit- I can do "proper" donuts.

When racing I try to not waste speed and momentum, so I would rarely make skid marks anyways. I would rather have more cars on the track than have skids.

Tizzla has never seen someone spin in NASCAR (a LOT of skid marks)

Not proper on the spot donuts, some cars can but most just swirl around.

I have actually. I beleive you, but i dont remember seeing skid marks.

My point being that skid marks are not important. " oh man look at all those sweet skid marks!!!! " sarcasm

I agree Tizzla, they arent important.

BUT with the inclusion of NASCAR it seems slightly more important (not important enough for me to care if they are there or not) because when they spin, or even get sideways, it leaves some burly marks.

Now tire smoke, thats a different story with NASCAR... I want that "Days of Thunder" moment where all you see is a wall of smoke and you must decide whether to go high, or go low. If you choose wrong your race is over.

To the people who havent seen "Days of Thunder," watch it your entire childhood, like me, and you might understand why Americans love NASCAR.
"Im dropping the hammer Harry"
"oh no you're not Cole"- as he hammers the throttle. LOL, thats good stuff.

Or Summernats style burnout comps.

If they are going to concentrate on tyre degredation, marbling and such, they can pay a little attention to that area aswell. It's actually more credible to ask for this than the people who are whinging that PD haven't got every single blade of grass on the circuit perfectly rendered or that trees rustle, etc.

So errrr, what are these on the track?

Skidmarks just add to the immersion of the game. PD should forget the whole perfect track concept they have at the moment. The only time any of the tracks in GT look as good as they do in the game is when the tarmac had just been laid. It just isn't realistic to have pristine tracks in a real world simulator.

I am not so sure of that sometimes...

Skid marks aren't THAT hard to do... and I don't think they need to be done to the level of detail you say to be very passable. Look at games that have skidmarks already... most are not terribly accurate but are good enough that unless you really look, there seems to be nothing missing.

The track surfaces to me don't look very realistic in GT5, some areas have this weired shine to them, and the textures could be improved, and yeah, there isn't much evidence of rubber layed down on them either.

Yea gt5p has these sorts of skid marks, they do know what skid marks are. They do happen in japan too.

But what people are complaining about is that they cant make their own skid marks.

You know this because you have developed racing games before?

to my man Tizzla- I know what they want (real time skids,) I was pointing out that you can get the same image as that picture from GT5P, thats all.

I've never really noticed them if I'm honest. I'll go check now, but I guess they're not as obvious as those ones.
It's not just skidmarks though. In GT4, Infineon Raceway looked like it was in the middle of the tropics in some places, but in reality it's like a desert! It's just little things like this that make games stand out. Yeah, it's not gonna make or break the game, but it'll improve the general feel of the game no end!

i was aiming my comment to whoever posted that f1 picture, i was agreeing with you that gt5p has those tire marks on the corners. It shows the racing line 👍

This always has to come up doesn't it? So basically no one here should say anything about the game unless they also program racing games? And let me guess, even if I did program racing games I would have to have programed one BETTER than GT to earn my right to say sommething?

Give me a break...

I probably wouldn't be a better president than our current one but that doesn't stop me from voting. I can't make great movies but that doens't stop me from telling you which ones are obvious crap...

Oh and as for why it's important, it's nice to see dynamic breaking markers and skidmarks are a great way to see how and where people are breaking.

I have done programming before, I understand the logistics of what it takes to do it, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, any company that can pull off rendering over a dozen high quality cars with all kinds of reflections and effects will not find it challening to add some decent skid marks.

Now they might dissapear after some time sure, and they might not always be perfect, pulling off those might well be a feat, but adding some decent skid marks? I can safely say that yes I know that it's not that challenging to do.

Hmmm...never even noticed this until you brought it up! It would be a nice addition, but I would like for them to balance this. Once thing that I hate the most is when my car CONSTANTLY lays skid marks and smokes. I really hate that because that doesn't really always happen in a real race. so, if they implement, I hope they do it realistically and minimally.
