Why Is Pizza Considered A Vegetable In US Schools?

I've been hunting all week and have only seen whitetail does... never seen the kind you're talking about. :lol:

Anyway,
Tomato paste=fruit
Cheese=dairy
Dough=grain
Meat topping=Meat
Vegetable topping =Vegetable

No vegetables in there anywhere, it's just the government doing stupid stuff for stupid reasons.

Fixed it for you.

Fixed it for you.
Can't remember the last time I saw a pizza in high school with anything other than cheese or pepperoni.

Either way, some sprinkles of oregano doesn't make an entire pizza a vegetable. If anything, it's still pizza. That's my theory.

Go get a tomato and smash it up tell me if it taste anything like pizza sauce. Than add in a ton of sugar and tell me which is closer. What I have learned is pretty much everything has lots of sugar in it unless you make it yourself. Don't be fooled by labels that say no sugar added either because they are just talking about extra sugar not that it has no sugar in it.

Yes, if only there was some clue in the label to stop you getting fooled!

Not that you should be really be worried about sugars that exist naturally in the food you eat.

Adding sugar to tomato sauce makes it taste better, they'll just use sugar/sweeteners in production tomato sauce rather than the wide array you may use in your home-made tomato sauce to balance out the acidity (garlic, onion, herbs, etc). It's no different to using salt and pepper to season and they use considerably less sugar in a tomato sauce than you think.

You can also make eating raw tomatoes taste better with just a bit of sugar on it, not just when you cook them.

Not that i eat pizza, but i was under the impression that the tomato 'sauce' they use on pizza is tomato purée (or passata) which doesn't usually contain anything other than tomato?

My grandmother used to serve sliced tomatoes with sugar sprinkled on top as a treat during the summer.

It was great! But really un-necessary since the fresh tomatoes were very good even without the sugar.

Should have stepped in here earlier. Good read from Famine on a story I had basically ignored. 👍

Maybe so, but a bit of salt instead makes them taste much, much better!

Happy memories of having a tomato fresh from the vine in one hand, and a salt shaker in the other.

I thought the same thing.

I like the gherkin.

I've been told (urban legend coming up) that the gherkins are put on a burger in McD's so that they fall into a different tax bracket from 'snack' and can be sold with less tax attached as having a bit of veg on there.

Seeing as a gherkin is pickled and not fresh they cost less than if they were to use tomatoes which would be required fresh eat day.

I know very few people that like them but also know very few people who order burgers without them. :confused:

Can't believe this thread is still going after what happened here.......:lol: (You know who I mean)

I should also add that when I was in school they sold 1/4 pound cookies and malts, not exactly healthy. That may have changed, but I doubt it.

I know they still do that.....they must. It was only a few years ago. Those cookies I used to have at lunch were damn good. I weigh 5 pounds less now than I did in high school. LOL

Most purée's will have an acidity regulator in them to maintain the acidity at x level and to stop browning and the like, though not all do and home made ones might not, the last bit depends on where you get your pizza from!

Not considered a fruit in any of the schools near where I live...

We know what the American education system is.

If people just knew that a tomato is a fruit the whole pizza at school would be shown for the real reason it is done.

Greed.

Let them eat cake.

Then make them run around a rugby pitch in the same all-season rugby kit and in any weather. Worked in my school.

What a wonderful way to solve a nationwide child obesity problem. Make processed pizza a salad because processed tomato paste is somehow a vegetable. It really says a lot about our government. They can't agree on any budget issues, but they can agree that pizza is a vegetable.
