Why there are people who scorn the custom tracks?

First, a small story that happened to me days ago:

I was chilling in my own lobby, running my own custom tracks (modesty apart, all of them are awsome and 100% fluid for drifting). It was me and a mate who regulary is posting on this forum, great drifter. But he said that he was only waiting for another very famous drift lobby opens, then he would leave and join on that room. As i had the same plan (join with them as soon as the lobby opened), came up the idea:

"I will send a message to one of the head bosses of that crew, asking if he could make one exception this time and set the lobby to anyone change the track (since they always open privately and only trustble people joins), or if he could download my lastest mt aso touge (5 stars, by the way) from my shared tracks and could let people hang out there anytime." So i did it.

Unfortunaly, he answered (polited):

"Not in this lobby, unfortunaly. Custom tracks scares people. Maybe in another day in another lobby". I got frustrated, but i did let it go.

In another very, very famous GT5 lobby, the admin always run only one custom track - The so famous 99 corners touge - and i tried many times to show up and stimulate him to add my custom tracks to the lobby, witch (in my humble opinion) are much more enjoyable and fluid than his 99. So far i got few or none sucess on that.

So im starting this thread to bring up the discussion: Why the heck most people underedstimate the custom tracks and the track generator by itself? If you´re not one of those, be ready to know that as soon as you change your common track choices (Tsukuba, Suzuka, Grand Valley...) to a custom track, most people will run out of your lobby like rats from a founding ship.

Apart of the discussion, i have my own theory to find some answers:
- Custom tracks are uglier.
- There is a high chance of make a custom track good on the paper, but with serious issues while driving. Sometimes i spend more than 2 hours in a single track and i have to give up after not find a way to solve a problem on the lines.
- Custom tracks normaly brings a higher range of risk to be run in lobbies, because there is a higher chance of make people to get stuck or disconect from the lobby.
- People like to feel strong, and a well known track is basic for this strenght (specialy for those who are extremely competitive and dont accept flaws on their sessions).

In other hand, i just reallize if there wasn´t a custom track generator since day #1 and it would be a new feature from any free DLC. Would that still being that underestimated?

Also, aren´t people kinda sick of so few choices of track? If i still drifting only on Madrid, Fuji (yuck!), Suzuka or Tsukuba (the newbie´s paradise), i swear that i will shoot myself. I mean it!

There are so few DLC tracks arriving, none of them are any focoused in drifting and plus, always there is those segregation issue of people who have it and who don´t.

For me, even with all issues, the custom track generator is a bless. I know that ill never will be able to build or reproduce that (in real life) track of my dreams, but it still able to make 100% good and fluid tracks for drifters, and it should be more spotted. I would love to see some custom tracks starting to be insanely shared and ran by everyone, maybe getting the same recognition than the tracks that we already have in the game. But we are so much far from that.

What do you guys think?

I love custom tracks. I'm always looking to see if you post new ones up so I can download them haha. I think it would be cool to get a map layout of created tracks to post on here, with the names of the track created. This way people could download them and try them out from other users if they like the way it looks. Get the some created tracks a bit more popular. I don't think I explained that well at all but I hope someone gets it haha.

I've never noticed the course making section until now. Wow.

They just don't offer the same flow. While I'd like a corner to go uphill after a long straightaway etc. it always does the opposite.

Wow, thanks for the feedback. This encorage myself to keep changing the shared tracks, witch is 1 at time, unfortunaly. I also have digging in my friend´s profiles for epic layouts, and i found some.

About your idea, i agree on that and there is one technical problem about: There is no way to take a picture of the map with the tools provided in the game, unless we grab a photo machine and take those photos, edit them and share in the post (extra picture ingame or a single lap showing the whole line would be awsome too). Also, map layout doesn´t show the track´s potential as a whole, specialy their issues (trapped elevation changes, including). But i guess it would be just an element to for avaliation for those who would try it.

My greatest problem with the Mt Aso and the other large scale generated maps is that most of the corners are blind and thats why you really need to take the time to get to know the track to find its beautifull corners and off course the corners that pose problems in connecting them with a nice line.. I guess most people, including myself sometimes, dont feel like taking that time. They just want to have fun, or practice things for which you need a track that you know by heart. ( A track you know very well)

Another thing for me at least is the smoke. Its really hard for me to judge lines on a track i dont know, with blind corners going over crests, with tons of smoke in my bumpercam face.. Its why i turn the driving line on on those tracks if the host allows it..

On the other hand; i LOVE the tokyo bay kart tracks. These tracks can be awesome to drift. I have one in particular that i love; which i would also love to share and get your opinions on..

As what others have said, it sometimes comes down to people not wanting to learn a whole new track that's unfamiliar. Most guys, even myself, have practiced the same lines over and over and will continue to do those lines over and over

Like someone mentioned, going on an unknown track has risks. With elevation changes, blind corners, and smoke...it doesn't mix well. Some people stick to what they know.

I love custom tracks, but with only a few people. I also generate them on the fly so everyone has a level playing field. I do hate it though, when I go on a brand new track and don't have a drift line, its frustrating.

I think another thing is size, some people don't like hunting for other drivers and if a tracks too big, it can lead to waiting and boredom.

Just my two cents.

Don't see the problem with custom tracks I love em I'm so board of the in game tracks eg tsukuba , Suzuka every day I go to the open lobby's and 99% are One of these 2 tracks so if people don't want to drift your custom tracks its obviously because there scared and don't want to get shown up

Y dont you start a meet say every sat/sun and I'm sure plenty of people will join have it so people can use there custom tracks as well I recon alot of the pro drifters would be interested as I know they all love the custom tracks I would definitely be up for it and I know a whole lot of my friends will be too good luck mate

I probably wouldn't go as far as saying I'm a strong or competitive drifter in GT5 but the above is the closest fit for why I'm unlikely to choose to drift on somebody else's custom track. Unless it's clearly going to be a muck about to learn the track then I might not feel so bad.....but then I don't have any friends that set these things up, don't have a mic to chat to folk and don't have regular hours for gaming so can't really see myself getting into that sort of stuff any time soon.

I like the custom tracks, I just haven't spent enough time on them.

Like others have said, not knowing the track, along with the numerous blind corners, is why a lot of people shy away from them.

Also, I know a lot of wheel users dislike Mt Aso because it is so bumpy, and the road surface is very choppy in some of the corners.

My one personal beef with the custom tracks is when people make a "drift" track, but put rediculous banking in every corner.

There are some people who make good custom tracks, but I never join ''random costum tracks'', 95 % sucks ( sorry to say ). The best costum tracks are probably from the people you know. TheOGTomcat, monsterGAUZ and decoy187 have sick costum tracks,

It's not really my cup of tea, but some are pretty sick

King B and monstergauz , ( edit : this is an old video, the tracks were pretty new by then).

1 - I suggest you should grab my latest creation on Mt Aso. After learning the lines, its possible to do a complete drift run, fluid and with high angles from the first corner till the last one. The only banked trap is in the very last uphill corner, where anyone can get easily stuck if not get in correctly.

2 - Thats interesting because most people i know can spend 3 hours drifting in 2 single sections on Fuji (again, yuck!) but dont have patience to learn a line in a custom track for 20 mins, or simply get sick of it after some few runs. My goal on the custom tracks is just one word: Addicting. If i dont achieve this goal, i just quit of that track.

3 - Yeah i heard of this issue by some wheel users friend of mine. I don´t have a wheel, so i don´t know if its exclusively in Mt. Aso or also there are other "standard" tracks with similar pattern. I believe that some points in Eiger can be bumpy too, specialy in the third corner in the hairpin sequence. Anyways, before i put Mt. Aso i ask how many wheel users are in the room and i advice that if they have some sour drifting on that track, let me know and then ill change it.

4 - Section elevation can be remedy or poison, depending on the usage. It can ruin or help to find a proper line. Normaly i use between 2 or (rarely) 3. Otherwise, sometimes it can provide interesting corners that you can´t find in the standard maps. For exemple, inverted banked corners!

I have to say if a custom track is long or is using a night and day cycle i tend to stay away from it, but i have been on some amazing smaller tracks.

For a while I stayed away from custom tracks because people would put the corners on maximum width and camber and would ruin the track for drifting. Now though I've been trying to make some sick tracks and I've done a good job. Learning to drift on a new track can be a good exercise because it requires you to adapt to a new challenge

Is there how to create a thread to categorize the best custom tracks, including layout, owner and 1 single lap video? Would anybody brave enough to face the challenge?

Think the only way to do so is if you have a screen recorder or a camera / phone to record the tv. Then you could write the info elevation, turns, owner, and so on.. on here. Show you drift tracks thread.

I'll post a couple of my tracks and one friends. I don't have the info or videos of the tracks though. I use them for missiles mostly. All are Eifel Kart.

It's been forever since I've tried it, but you should be able to log into the official website with your PSN info and be able to view your shared track. Then, it's a Print Screen (and image hosting site) away from sharing on here, with the necessary info right there with it.

Of course, the drawback is it can only be the one track you've shared, making documenting a collection a gigantic PITA. But I did this before with shared cars for Photomode Competition prizes last year.

Worthfull information, thanks.

Im also thinking about record 1 single lap (even ruthlessy in a cellphone) if ill start a compilation thread for custom drift tracks.

In my opinion, custom tracks offer a wide variety of challenging turns and obstacles that can greatly increase your drifting skill. In addition to this, custom tracks are very fun, and are a nice challenge for drifters of all skill levels. I think the biggest problem that people have with custom tracks is that they don't want to leave their comfort zones, and do not want to try tracks that they are unfamiliar with, which is why we find half of GT5's community stuck on Tsukuba lol.

I hate most custom tracks some are really tight with 5000 turns some are way to wide like a nascar track.
There some nice tracks but it's very rare so I avoid custom tracks lobbys .

After joining a Touge series, I can tell you that LotS (Legend of the Streets) Touge is a great source of good tracks, imaginably. Though slightly slower than, for example, Le Mans, they're still decent tracks.

Sorry for the Double Quote, but it really really works. I did logged into the GT5 website and i really could see my "Mt. Aso TG 5 25".

Check it out:

Now i have enough to start a compilation thread. Also ill try to record (even raw from my cellphone) a single lap video, so people will be able to feel the tracks better. I just don´t know where exactly should i create this thread: In the general drift forum or the drift video´s forum, since probably there will be videos on it?

EDIT:
Is this sample enough to realize how is the track? I know the quality is lame and i had to cut out some part of the screen... any suggestions?
