Wil you watch American Top Gear?

I was watching Top gear US after not watching Top Gear UK for 2 weeks, and I thought it was awesome. Then, I watched the season premiere of TGUK last night, and I quickly changed my mind.

I'm starting to really enjoy TGUS, even if it has it's Americanisms (recaps galore, commercials, accent :P ). The challenges they're coming up with, while maybe not on par with where TGUK is at today, are entertaining to me, and now they have guests that I actually recognize!

Yeah, but how did Rutlage get a late model firebird on such short cash? I thought their budget was like $2k but that car would easily list for $5k on craigslist.

Depends where you are in the US. That's actually a '94-'97 model, so it wouldn't be hard to find one for under 2 grand, especially out west where they are probably abundant.

I'm watching the pilot right now on iPlayer and it's pretty good so far. If you go into it expecting it to be the same as the UK version you'll be disappointed, but the presenters have their own quirks and personalities and so far, from what I've seen, it works!

The first few episodes are absolutely horrid but get about half way into season 1 and things really turn around and by the time you hit the second season it's a pretty quality show.

What makes you say that? I really enjoyed the first episode! :) I like a lot of American shows though, and I like US TV presenters too, whereas a lot of Brits don't.

It felt like it was slapped together on a shoestring budget, the camera work was terrible and so was the scripting. Once they got past the few episodes they recorded for the pilot series, it was vastly improved. The scripting became more natural, they actually tried with the cinematography and the show was just more interesting as a whole.

The second season was pure gold and I almost think I enjoyed it more than the UK version.

I can't wait to see them then :D

My only foible with episode 1 was the guy in the Gallardo Superleggera shouting "****!" with every gear-change. They're not that bad on your neck, I've only driven a Gallardo Spyder but the difference isn't that much!

I agree, but, why did they make only seven episodes, why not ten like the first season? The worst part of the whole season was when they did that big promo for Forza 4, what a waste of half an episode.

Not sure what people's problem with Top Gear US is.

Sure, 2 of the hosts are dumbasses and the other's a bitch, but it works... It's still funny and it's still cars.

Its alright, seems a bit cheap and cheesy to me. It would be cool if I hadn't already been watching the UK version. Some of it is alright, some of it is a bit cringeworthy.

No comments on this yet?

I thought it was an ok episode, amusing rather then funny but not too bad overall.

It's alright but when you begin to compare with TGUK the American one just gets blown out of the water.

The challenges don't seem very well thought out. I mean come on...fire works popping when he opens the doors? Then there was the getting electrocuted while driving during a challenge. It was all a bit too cheesy.

I'm sure the fireworks were just to guarantee the kind of insanity Clarkson had when his truck caught fire on their truck challenge.

Watched an episode of Top Gear USA the other week, invovling old detroit classic muscle cars and testing them in various ways. Besides copying some of the UK's tests for cars, it was pretty decent.

Loving the old muscle 👍

Was it just me, or did Adam switch his 01' Town and Country for an older model in the last challenge? (Across the lake)

As I've read from FinalGear, that's true. He switched his Town & Country for a previous generation as you can tell by the interior.

Also, pointing out the off-road gear was on the vans during the drag race to remove the seats. If anyone noticed that. But ignoring those small issues, I'd say I enjoyed the episode quite a lot. The ending had quite a few downsides, but overall it was entertaining. It felt like the UK Bolivia special mixed with the Alaskan special. I'd give the episode an 8.5/10. 👍

I enjoyed the Minivan episode. I have a bigger connection to the American series because they are choosing cars that I drove when I was younger. I remember my father criticizing his friend's purchase of a RWD Aerostar because it was going to suck in the snow. Of course, at the time my father was driving a Caprice wagon so he didn't exactly have a leg to stand on. A few years later my father traded the Caprice for a FWD Lumina MPV (aka the dustbuster van). He's never had great taste in vehicles.

Hey, look, they were asked to get three supercars and they got three VWs.

EDIT: I am excited to see the limo episode next week, though.

As for my choice of Convertible for Donald Trump...I would still have picked the Spyker Aileron Spyder. The new Spyder has done away with the Laviolette's 5-point racing harness and has replaced it with a simple lap belt. It's exclusive, quick, sexy...and...it still has an Audi V8, so it still fits with the VW theme of the show. And it has "lambo" doors and the trademarked exposed gear linkage and it costs about as much as the Bentley. (BTW, the Bentley lost the golf-ball challenge because it weights 2 tons.)

No offense to people who like it but it seriously sucks compared to UK one.

I half agree. I still HATE Rutledge. I understand he's a car reviewer...but he's also an idiot. I mean, if I was going to pick someone to go car shopping with, it I'd rather go with Adam or Tanner than Rutledge. Heck, I'd rather have James May bore me for 5 hours while trying to decided on a car, than have Rutledge's annoying voice in my ear telling be why a POS is a good car. They need a better James May-esque character...or is Rutledge supposed to be a Hammond Character? I don't think it matters, really. I would say they should get Christopher Titus, but I think that might not end up so well on a lot of the shows. It'd be funny as watching a fat kid endure a salad, but I don't think Titus would flow well with Tanner or Adam.

However, I do like the "we were told to each pick a car and we're presented with a series of challenges" every week format. Those are more entertaining, anyway. The only problem is, they're gonna run out of ideas for those fast. I've noticed they've done a lot of the same stuff as the British show in the Challenges like the Cheap Car, Best Supercar, Minivans, and Limos...but I have also noticed they like to mix up the cheap cars with the full-priced cars.

Two other gripes: 1. They need to get rid of the Big Star, Small Car segment and replace it with a vehicle test to fill up their leader boards. 2. I HATE American television and their 45 minute shows. The British Top Gear gets a full 60 minutes or more. If Top Gear USA had 15 more minutes...that's enough for a Car review and more antics on the challenges without knocking out the BSSC segment.

It sucks and fails like most of the UK TV shows they try to start up an american one of, Shameless was the same, UK version = good, US version = sucks.

They should have never named it Top Gear & approached it from a younger point of view, as an alternative to Top Gear.

I still say the US Top Gear is better than the UK Top Gear's been the past few seasons. The UK shows is just getting stupid, sure there are moments of brilliance but most of the it just isn't funny or all that entertaining. The last episode of UK Top Gear showed that they still can still produce a genuinely good episode, so I'm confused why they choose to go the route of being stupid.

Sure there is stupidity in the US version, but I've never really found myself bored with any of the episodes outside the first half of season 1. Season 2 is phenomenal and if you haven't watched it I suggest you do. And leave your bias at the door and watch the show for what it is, once you do that it's pretty entertaining. I've stopped trying to compare things to the UK show, it just doesn't work.

It sucks and fails like most of the UK TV shows they try to start up an american one of

Ya, The Office, American Idol, America's Got Talent, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and Who's Line is it Anyways hardly failed.

Loving TG US, season 1 was a little rough, but it keeps getting better.

I removed TG UK from my scheduled recordings on my DVR, mainly because it was showing episodes from 2003 as "new". And it was getting lame.

Also, anyone find it odd/funny that Trump was on TG US days after firing Adam Carolla (who hosts a similar show to TG US, on Speed channel) on the Celebrity Apprentice?
