I'm gutted that I missed a 3 - I forgot that I had a yellow in the first line, otherwise I should have got it.

I think the limit is 9 to solve all four. There's a practice one which I got in 5,6,8,9...

I came in to say that the NYT upped the difficulty. Aroma as yesterday's word is actually a bit unfair as there is no indication if a letter is repeated or not (I got it, but the wife didn't and she's not happy ). I'm sure they think they have to keep it hard like their crossword puzzles #yawn. The wife and I will play a knock-off one going forward.

I get the feeling that we are just in a hard stretch of words. I went and found a website that lets you play the entire archive - the first couple of months were harder than it is now IMO. One of the early ones was SISSY. Who thinks to triple up a letter?

Meh. The words...exist. The difficulty is fairly finite, and I've gotten some that one might expect to be more difficult (ABBEY, perhaps more difficult as an American due to the infrequency of examples on my native soil) while I've kicked myself over not getting ones that maybe should have been easier (SHARD).

You mention triple consonants, but what about double-doubles (ALLAY)? Are there any full houses (only two unique letters)? ESSES. Not sure how likely it is that'll show up.

I remember reading that the word list doesn't have words that are too obscure and is therefore not an exhaustive list of all 5 letter words. I don't know if "harder" words like the above would be filtered out too (whether by Wardle or the Nyt going forward).

It's safe to say I don't think we'll be seeing xylyl anytime soon (I imagine the reaction to that might break Twitter)

EDIT: Out of interest I looked up your two suggested words on the list and the result.... makes sense (I won't spoil it).
