World To End: BMW Working on FWD Car

Missed the bus by about two decades. BMW has been making front-wheel drive cars since they released their first MINI hatchback.

If we're talking about the shame of making a car that's worse than a Carens, yes... it is quite shameful.

In fairness, the rearmost seats in the Kia are also about that tiny. So they really have copied it...

But Kia doesn't make people sit on ironing boards.

Well, not recently, anyway.

Dear BMW, as you have not responded to our letter of over a year ago:

In light of current developments, and your continued blatant disregard of our copyright, we have no choice but to take you to court.

Also, who wore it better:

Yay for Korean design houses run by European designers!

Also, that third row is absolutely terrible. I didn't think they could make anything less comfortable than the wretched third row in the X5, but they did it. There are third world microvans with third rows better than that.

The silhouette and shoulder line are pretty similar, but really, when you look at many of the details, they're pretty different. Add the M sport option to the 2er, and I'd go so far as to say the 2er would look alright...

Also, if you want to regularly transport 7 adults in comfort, I doubt you'd be looking at this end of the market.

The joke worked better the first time around, anyway...

It's amusing how resolutely low the designers kept the nose. Hanging on to that last shred of dignity... errh... connection to any sporting roots that the brand claims for its models.

Also, mini-MPVs with occassional third rows aren't the first word in spaciousness, but again, that third row seems awfully uncomfortable, whatever your size. Not that it would affect 2- sales in any way.

I've often wondered if the 2 would be a big mistake for BMW... not the FWD yo part, but the dumpy form factor... since BMW's dominance has been built partially on clever marketing. The 1-series is a good case in point, and forced Merc to finally pay attention to the sex appeal of its smaller cars.

But sales numbers aren't going to show the value of the Active Tourer experiment, yet... since sales didn't really start in earnest until the latter half of 2014.

With more variants budding off of the FWD architecture, however, whatever model does or does not sell, BMW will have enough volume to justify the development of the platform.

I think it's a waste, though, that they didn't lead off with a 1-series or the rumored Z2. So sad to see the MINI Roadster dying out. Despite its numerous flaws, it was an incredibly good idea.

I wonder if BMW is metering out its introduction of FWD vehicles to keep from cannibalizing MINI sales? No need to worry about that. MINI sales are terrible, as it is, anyway.

In a market that's about to lose the Mazda 5, hey BMW, you bringin' it over?

In a market that's about to lose the Mazda 5, hey everyone else, where's my mini-Minivan?

I did drive a Mazda 5 once, it felt really great, I liked it!
Really was hoping to see a KODO-fied version of it...

German Manufactuers don't look at the market, they only look at other German brands.

The Cycle is on going till their entire lineup is basically identical.

M sport kit makes it look so much better... I can't understand why every active router I've seen is the standard version. From an aesthetic point of view the M sport is a must have option.

The flip side of this is that if you're buying a car to ferry the family around in then putting 18" wheels and stiffer suspension on it is daft. And since the merits of the M Sport kit pale in comparison to the way it looks as a whole, you might as well go for the cheaper, better-riding option.

As surprisingly impressive as that is in the style department, I think it's pretty much exactly what people feared would become of BMW, beginning with the first X-series. Here's hoping the Active Tourer makes a splash in the people-mover market so BMW can continue to fund cars like the M235i Coupe, and R&D to continue trimming excess weight. That's business.

End of the day if your an M3 buyer this doesn't effect you other then assuring you will still get more M3's in the future.

Not that the current M3 is much of a car to aspire to for anyone that isn't already a BMW fanboy.

Tiff Needell shows being FWD doesn't mean it doesn't oversteer :P

Impressive. Considering it likely has that stupid electronic parking brake switch.

Wonder how quickly (or slowly) he was going to get that sideways?

So is that based on the 2 series active tourer and not the RWD F20 1 series then?

Guess we'll see it in the Chinese Touring Car Championship.

Damn well better had! The F30 has done nothing on the touring car scene to uphold the legacy of the 320Si, 320iS, 318iS, 320i STW, or M3.

So is that based on the 2 series active tourer and not the RWD F20 1 series then?

UKL Platform so FWD, Mini and Active Tourer DNA.

On the plus side, rumours have been pretty persistent for a while now that a 2GC will make it into the mix for the next gen, and Klaus Fröhlich is on record as saying he is keen to keep RWD going for the 2-er, even if the run of the mill 1-er's go FWD.
