Damn Atkinson retired SS16 - Brake failure or spectator sabotage. Not using Superally?

Some of the spectators are being real 🤬 this rally, yesterday a stage was cancelled because fans were throwing rocks at the cars and now on stage 20:
Armindo Araujo “It’s very dangerous, there is a rock like 50 kilos in the middle of the road, not just one - someone is trying to kill us, crazy people.”
Sebastien Ogier “Near the end there was a big rock in the middle of the road, I tried to avoid it and hit the bank.”

Novikov has just hit a rock and ripped the suspension of his car, maybe done by the "fans".

It was a brake failure - he hit the flying finish at speed, but found nothing when he stamped on the brake pedal, and ended up spearing into an embankment. Mexico is using Superally regulations, so he can (and will) re-enter tomorrow.

Latvala is out, he rolled and lost 7 minutes fixing a puncture, he made it to the end of the stage, but was excluded from starting stage 23 because of damage to the rollcage, the powerstage is underway now.

Mexican spectators appear to be really unsporting, if I was the FIA I wouldn't go back, that's no way to treat people.

and the sad thing about it is when the FIA Do pull out of there, the Mexicans will cry. I really can't see how the people doing this can think any good will come of it... Bit silly really

Vodafone Rally de Portugal, 29 Mar - 01 Apr 12

Congrats Loeb for 6 Mexico wins in a row. 👍

I feel sorry for Jari matti, you can see how dissapointed he was especially after his big mistake. Whats with the Fords and all these tyre punctures? Is it purely a rock avoidance thing or maybe is it the Ford tyre and body design make punctures more susceptible?

Nearly missed this one:

The manufacturers have sent a "suggested" calendar to the FIA, and they want to focus on Europe and the Americas. They've apparently dropped Australia/New Zealand, and they don't seem to be too fussed on a candidate event being run in South Africa, either. Instead, they want two rounds in South America (probably Argentina and the second candidate event in Brazil), one in Central America (no doubt Mexico), and the remaining ten in Europe.

Hey, Mexico is a great event.

Although if rallying were to go to America, then I think they should get something started in Denver. It's hard up against the Rockies, and there's a mix of gravel and tarmac. In the winter, there would be snow, too. Alternatively, there would be some good stuff up behind Los Angeles.

But I doubt it would happen any time soon, if ever. Any event that wants to join the WRC needs to be held as a candidate event for two years before it can be considered for the actual calendar, and insofar as I know, no American rally has applied for candidate status. So it would be at least three years before an American rally in the WRC.

With the issues they had this year regarding fans and rocks, I'm surprised they even bother going to Mexico.

And I agree, a wintertime based rally in the snow covered Rockies would be epic.

It's a problem all over the world - spectators meddle with the stages, adding and removing things to the road right in front of the spectator areas. The obvious intention is to create something more exciting for them to watch. There was a problem in Australia a few years ago - 2006, I think - where spectators were adding dirt to an existing jump to make it bigger.

I wouldn't say it's a problem all over the world. If someone would try to put obstacles on the road in Finland, I wouldn't want to be there to see what other spectators would do to that person...

Portugal Quali just finished:
Latvala 1st, Petter 2nd and Hirvonen 3rd with Loeb in 4rd

The drivers have picked their start position for tomorrows stages. Petter will run as car 16 on the road, while Latvala will be car 17.
Hirvonen decided to be number 1 and Loeb number 2.
The organiser will water the stages before the start, and that will probably help a lot with the dust.
Hopefully Petter and Latvala will have an advantage with the cars infront cleaning the road for them.

First stage will start in Lisbon at 15:00 Thursday.

Not suggesting that spectators should do this, but did the extra dirt cause any troubles.

Not really. It was a huge accident, the impact deformed the rollcage.

No rally 2 in Portugal either so anyone who goes off isn't coming back.
Definitely good for the championship and FordWRT though. But it looked like they had a chance of beating Loeb this rally anyhow after the Fafe rally win last week.
What's with day 1 highlights only being shown after day 2 is complete...

I meant by a better fight with the rest of the field for first without Loeb rather than him or the co-driver getting hurt...

Cool??? lets hope that the rest of the front runners crash also (without getting hurt) so that we can have a boring rally afterwards...

Yes, it did. When the drivers do the recee, they take very detailed notes of the stages. These notes will dictate precisely how a driver approaches a stage - his speed, his braking points, what gear he should be in, and so on. If he is in the stage and expecting a jump to be of a certain height, and discovers that the jump has been altered by the addition of extra dirt, then it becomes very dangerous, very quickly. He will hit the jump at the wrong speed, and may not be able to get the car under control once he lands. And that's why the stage was cancelled: because unsanctioned alterations to the stage can be dangerous.

And the past 8 years haven't been boring at all with Loeb out front... I guess you misunderstood my explanation...

Terrible conditions today.
Ott Tanak, Neuville and Jari Matti have retired already on the first stage...
JML last year in the WRC?
Nooo Petter has stopped on the stage now too.

Rally over. Nothing to see here.

Don't follow WRC religiously, but Latvala doesn't seem like a team leader to me. Could well be his last year but I hope Ford keep Solberg.

EDIT: And now Solberg has gone off as well...
