X1 Prototype- WOW!

I was thinking something along those lines griffith but we wont find out untill we get GT in the ps3 :( lol, It does beg the question though as to weather the LMP cars would be as fast or not on La Sarth
 
@ analog: I think my half-track idea is probably flawed also. :lol: Although, I think it had been done before, more successfully, but perhaps not in a competition.

Trial and error is more fun than coldly calculating all flaws beforehand though :lol:, half-tracks were quite succesful for military purposes I reckon.
Not sure competitively though, unless they raced each other towards the Polish border....
Having said that, could come handy in the snow.:dopey: ( although strictly speaking these aren't half-tracks I suppose ).

A snow mobile is a half track trike in my opinion so if we did get bikes in GT5 then id say a snow mobile could maybe be added, Maybe im looking too far outside the box on that front though

Also, with the introduction of a CVT, what are it's pre-fixed ratios? Will it be manually shiftable? So many questions.
 
I hoped they gave this brief to more than just Newey.

I reckon it would've been interesting to see what other design teams would've come up with.

At the very least they should've given the specs to others, then we could've had other concepts to race against... Ferrari, McLaren, Peugeot, Renault, Audi are a few that could've offered something... some may've looked better... or worse...

CVT has one gear, with a range from 0-400kmh, no shifting is needed because there are no cogs in the transmission system (apart from connecting to a differential. The best way to imagine a Constantly Variable Transmission is to think of an elastic band wrapped around a pulley at one end, and a cone at the other. As the car accelerates, the ECU moves the cone and the elastic band up and down to keep the engine at the point where peak power occurs. For instance, if max power is 16,000 revs, the cone will move back and forth to keep the engine revving at 16,000, regardless of the speed travelling.
 
X-1 looks awesome. If there was ever going to be a rival championship tp F1, this is the way it should go, except with similar speed/power output to current F1 cars to keep it all nice and safe.

Got me thinking about other concept cars too. Kaz should get the Deltawing Indycar Concept in there. Now that was radical looking!
 
I'm shocked amazed by the looks and power of it.

If someone actually started producing one, then we could possibly start a new racing league: the X1 Championship?

I would love to get my hands on this car in GT5...whenever it gets released.

London, 28th October: Sony Computer Entertainment today revealed details of a fantasy racing car built using very real technologies. The X1 Prototype is the answer to the ‘What if’ dream of a world where racing car design is no longer limited by regulation. Forged by Polyphony Digital, working with world-class racing car constructor Red Bull Racing and aerodynamics expert and racing car design genius Adrian Newey, the result goes far beyond the startling new look. If the performance of test driver Sebastian Vettel in a shakedown run at the Suzuka Circuit is to be believed, the driving experience, available exclusively through Gran Turismo®5 on PlayStation®3, will be unbeatable.

As with all design masterpieces, the Red Bull X1 has been through several iterations. The starting point was a low drag single seat wing car with a glass canopy and covered wheels, powered by a forced induction engine. The result was a startling set of figures; 1,483hp at 15,000rpm, a top speed of 400kmh and up to 6G of lateral G-force. However under the expert eye of Newey and driven by his passion to realise the dream, the initial concept then took a big step forward. He proposed the use of ‘Fan Car’ technology - last seen and rapidly banned from F1 in the late 70s - where a fan is used to force air out from underneath the car, lowering the air pressure creating a huge amount of downforce.

A redesign of the car showed its value on the track where traditional low speed corners could be taken at significantly higher speeds. The new figures showed a maximum lateral G force exceeding 8G, pushing the limits for the human body, and a top speed of more than 450kmh. The killer combination of low air resistance due to body styling, glass canopies and full tire cowlings; increased low speed down-force courtesy of the fans; and stability at high speed due to front and rear wings and rear diffuser, are what brought about this result.

For a nervous design team the last stage of the journey was the shakedown test. Enter Sebastian Vettel who, on his first run, slashed more than 20 seconds off the course record on the Suzuka Circuit.

As Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer of Red Bull Racing puts it: “The results were thrilling. X1 is about evolution. Delivering the optimum combination of tested technologies in a single integrated design. This would be the future of racing were we not bound by regulations, but one that is achievable today. Twin Turbo V6 now? Was a geared (CVT) Jet turbine in the other preview.
 
I'm wondering the same thing about the engine. V6-TT? I guess I should believe this one since it's from the GT page itself.
 
Time to dissect that video!

When Vettel is at the track selection screen, there's 2 selections of the 2005 Circuit de la Sarthe, but there's also a selection just before it. I believe we will have more than 2 layouts (not counting reverse) for Circuit de la Sarthe!

Immediately after that, we see multiple layouts for the GP course at Nurburgring.

Watching the last lap at the end of the video, it just seems like it's cheating, haha. So fast!!

It's a shame they switched the turbine and CVT, but 4-stroke reving up and down and shifting is a more enjoyable experience for me personnaly, a jet engine at a constant RPM isn't as exciting to hear.
