So, got back from playing it for a couple hours. It was the same demo that's been making the rounds. There are seven choices:
- Ford GT @ Rio
- Audi TT @ Brands Hatch (Wet)
- Lamborghini Huracan @ Sebring (Night)
- Ferrari 250 GTO @ Rio
- Ford EcoBoost Formula @ Rio
- Volvo S60 STCC @ Brands Hatch (Wet)
- BMW Z4 GTE @ Sebring (Night)
Tried everything but the TT. Loading times aren't much different from FM5, which is good. There's still that frustrating auto-rev feature until the pre-race countdown hits 1. The GT is a beast, and it sounds pretty good for a turbo V6. The 250 GTO felt sublime, a real pleasure to steer. Same with the Formula actually: I wasn't entirely sold on Rio based on videos, but switching to hood cam made it quite a rush to thread it through the city. The S60 was a little disappointing, but I chalk that up to the wet track. The puddles will mess you up
badly if you hit one with some lock wound on. One thing I haven't really noticed in the Brands Hatch videos so far is the atmosphere of it: the rain effects are done very well, but the bits of fog you drive through at various points were even more impressive. The Z4 feels secure, and the lighting on the night tracks works great: it feels like you're out there shining a light on things, not just playing on a darkened-textures day track. The BMW's also got a handy lap timer built right into the instrument binnacle.
The less good things: the wheel had a surprising lack of feedback. I drove the Huracan and could barely keep it on the road, and that was with ABS on (I ran everything else with it, and TCS/ASM, off). It weights up strangely; while the controller offers lots of minute rumbles to let you know what the tires are doing turning into, during, and out of a corner, the wheel gives a little resistance on turn-in, but then goes light. It stays light for the first 1/4 turn of opposite lock too, so you aren't entirely sure if you're winding on enough or not. I was told the wheels had been giving them issues throughout the day (especially the pedals not staying secure), so I'll reserve judgment for a later date. I also need to take into account that the only time I've driven the Huracan before this was in Horizon, so I shouldn't expect it to handle like it does in there.
There was an instance or two of odd pop-up with the lights reflecting off the backs of other cars. Minor issue that may not even be one in the final game. The sense of speed also didn't strike me as quite as impressive as either other Forza XBOne title, but I also drive almost exclusively with hood view at home (and the afore-mentioned Formula experience definitely wasn't lacking in the sense of speed department).
Overall, I had a lot of fun. Got to check out some other games (because hey, maybe I'll actually expand my XBox library beyond Forza), and playing FM6 itself for as much as I did got me really excited to play the final game. This is going to be a seriously impressive game.
