Okay turns out that my PC had excessive programs running so that's why it was slow.

I ran the test again at CNET this time and they said my PC had 28xx.xx kb/s speed. But wireless router got moved and now I'm stuck at 12xx.xx kb/s

I have a 600kbs connection and my ping to play an online game with guys in the US is about 200-300. An arcade near by has a connection of 7000kbs and his ping is about the same as mine. Why is that?

Ping is to do with how fast a signal can get from your computer to another computer on the net and back.

A computer with a 10Mb Internet connection can theoretically receive and send data 10 times as fast as a computer with a 1Mb Internet connection, which means that web pages and file downloads will happen much faster.

But, "ping" is a measure of the amount of time it takes for a signal to hit another computer and bounce back. A 256K internet connection and a 4Mb internet connection will probably have similar ping times because a particular bit of information will have to travel the same distance to a server and back, regardless of bandwidth.

In simple terms, "ping" is a measurement of how long it takes for information to travel from your PC to a server and back and is mainly of interest to users like online gamers where the delay between hitting "fire" and fellow online players acknowledging said shot is important, as opposed to downloading files, where the rate of transfer is what's important.

Would a 150 ping be fairly good?

I do know that if the server is held closer to home then the ping is lower so the game runs smoother. Would the fact that I'm using firewall slow down the ping?

Not really. I have cable, when I play online in most games i get about a 40-50 ping. When at LAN parties I get a 6 ping

Dammit, my internet sucks. It varies quite frequently, actually. Some day its 660kilobits/s, some days its 4000kilobits/s.

Ping is usually 100 for me while playing Halo.

My internet connection isn't bad, 4mb cable connection. Might be upping it to 10mb soon, not sure yet. Anyway I have a question about IP addresses, how do you renew your IP address if your interent is being provided through a digital settop box? I'm with NTL. I have no knowledge of this, so if it's a stupidly simple question give me a stupidly simple answer.

Me and my Dad share a 16MB connection, but at the moment are line only supports 4MB. But the highest download Speed I have had is 980KBPS for 256MB download, which took under 5 minutes to download.

However when I downloaded two files at the same time, which was also 256MB big, the first one was 780KBPS and the other was 220KBPS.
