-> If the M/T is offered, that would easily cover that gus-guzzler tax easily (maybe USD$2,000-3,000 off).

Your version is slightly more than our base SS but you get much more value with the Chevy. I still can't believe you guys can get a Corvette for less than I can get a base model Maloo though........

Hmm I'm not 100% on that price. I mean for another 8 grand you cab get yourself into a 2014 Stingray...

And how many people will cross-shop those two?

This is true, but I was just thinking it seemed a little more expensive than I was expecting it to be. I really wanted to check one of these out in person though, I'm just sad to know that Canada won't be getting these.

Still not an improvement over this:

It doesn't even have Atari gauges.

GM's Australian branch Holden has sent its new VF Commodore SS V Redline Ute around the 12mile(20km-21km) track and it set a time of 8:19.47. It is about 3 seconds a lap faster than a Chevrolet Camaro SS and about a second slower than the Lexus IS-F. That time, 8:19.47, it's not the fastest time but it is impressive for a pickup; well ute as it's known as, making it the fastest utility/commercial vehicle to lap the Nurdburgring. Rob Trubiani, Holden's Dynamic Engineer, who posted the Holden's time said that Holden:

"Came up with a plan to tackle the Nürburgring and break the world record for a commercial or utility vehicle but when we did our research it seemed one didn’t exist, so we decided to set a record instead!”

“Without a lap record to break, we sat down and calculated what we thought the Ute could do and targeted around 8min 30sec. Initial practice sessions at the track confirmed that was a stretch target so that’s what we aimed for. To slash 11 seconds from that time with an 8m 19.47sec lap was incredible. There may not have been a utility-vehicle record before but I’m proud to say the VF SS V Redline Ute is now the Nürburgring benchmark!”

Well done Holden, your saloon based ute with only 367bhp(270kw) has both beaten GM's Camaro SS and has set a new track record at Nurburg. Well done.

That's nice and all - but the only opponents were the Dodge Ram and the F150 - both very top heavy utes that really aren't up for the task.

Where as Aussie utes are essentially just a coupe with a bed strapped to the rear, very low centre of gravity and with plenty of racing heritage to give data for improvements it's no surprise that it did so well.

It's nice that Holden's holding a record now though, even if it's an extremely niche division.

The only notable thing about this is that it was faster than the Camaro despite being down 60 horses. Though it's also probably lighter than the Camaro, so...

Utes are not trucks/thread.

I can't help but think that the Camaro has better weight distribution though..

You've got a revised Zeta chassis, a better engine, likely a better-programmed transmission, and a likely lower weight. I'm not entirely surprised, but, it's good to know that the Ute is quick. Still, a shame that we're getting the new Colorado over that...

I just did some searching...

The ute was an auto with 260kw not the 270kw manual. The ute weighs 15 kg more than the sedan and 44 kg more than the Camaro SS.

What? you can blatantly see the driver shifting in the video though?

Yep. Sports mode in the auto means you just tap +/- through the gears. Watch his left leg - it never moves for a clutch pedal.

Hmm.. that's mighty interesting! Cheers for clearing up my confusion 👍

Just saw my first vf on the road it was just an evoke but looks pretty good for a base model

They are not on sale yet so only holden dealers are driving them

I have yet to see the Chevrolet SS on the road. The car is already gorgeous looking as a NASCAR Gen-6 stock car, but I have to see one on the road or at some Chevrolet dealer. I'll probably see one if I make it out to the 2014 Houston Auto Show or something. I've seen a lot more of the new Ford Fusion than I have the SS.

I believe the SS won't be officially on sale in the US until Q3, which means that they won't really start showing up until September or October. I'm wondering how many will be made available early on, or if it's a "when you order it, we'll ship it" kind of deal.

GM has done some stupid things, even post Government Motors, but I can't imagine that they will go through all this effort to purposely send the car out to die. It will have to have some sort of showroom presence.

Starting to see a lot of VF's now, not many on the road but a lot on trucks and at dealers. Also obviously the Holden factory has a lot of them in the yards.

The media embargo on the HSV GTS has been lifted. So, unsurprisingly, there's a shedload of track reviews from a recent session at Phillip Island (apart from CarsGuide who went to Mount Panorama):

Naturally, many of them say the same stuff; it's got absolutely manic performance, but it still feels like a heavy car.

That would be sad if not many Chevrolet SSes hit the road. Because unlike the 2000s Monte Carlo or the 2000s Impala, I'm actually excited about the SS. Beautiful and stylish car. And for performance types, I need only say "rear-wheel drive." So I actually would love to see one of these SSes on the road and in dealers.
