Not so sure if this is Some Like it Hot Red...

Damn, that purple looks good. First good-looking purple car GM has done since, what, the '06 GTO? Do they even do a purple Sonic yet?

Really makes me wish they'd do Bermuda Blue on the SS, too.

Peacock green looks like a bermuda blue, except more green than blue.

Yellow was one of my favourite colours of the VE. It hasn't made it to the VF yet, but I trust it will eventually.

Has anyone photos of the 2014 Chevrolet SS in that yellow I see?

Had the pleasure of hearing one of the local VE VXR8s on Saturday. Such a vocal exhaust on this particular black example. There's a red one around that's more restrained, so I suspect the black car has a Wortec exhaust fitted.

Personally I don't think that color suits the SS, it more of a sleeper and it doesn't look right on the car.
If they made a more hardcore version with a more aggressive body kit, it would look better with a color like that.

But Peacock Green and Alchemy Purple look amazing !

That blue is beautiful. Very similar to World Rally Blue. Just not as much pearl. Still a very beautiful blue.
I would like to see that purple in the sunlight. I bet it really comes to life in the sun.

I fell the same way, however there's a crazy amount of ///M cars that leave the factory in that color so those people are out there...

Blue is nice. I kinda like the dark green too.

I finally got a decent test drive of the current SS. The interior is far ahead of G8 GXP. With magnetic shocks and MT it'd be an awesome car to drive to work - comfortable and quiet when needed- and occasionally wrestle around the track. With MT it'd be even manageable in winter.

But why an '03?
^ The last year of the greatest M5 ever built.

- Naturally Aspirated 5.0L V8
- 6-speed Manual, no AT/SMG/DCT option
- RWD w/ Mechanical LSD
- No iDrive
- Impeccable handling dynamics with DSC off & Sport button on.
- Last analog M5
- Timeless looks

-> It's obvious that the VF would eventually be the true successor to the E39 M5 in the slimmest margin.

@The Vanishing Boy Thanks for posting that. I saw it on another forum a week or so ago, and of course, I had to go out and grab myself a copy.

One thing that I didn't like about the article was that they complained about the lack of grip, but then admitted that the tires were at their end of life. Given how important tires are to how well cars handle and fee, I feel that R&T, or the owner, should have fitted the car with some fresh(er) tires so that there's some semblance of fairness between the Chevy SS and it.

I love, and am still kind of blown away at how 15 years later, the E39 is still the gold standard. Considering what they said in the article, imagine just how good it must have been compared to everything else when it was first introduced. I would drive and try out the SS though. I like how it looks, and is a very intriguing proposition.

But why an '03?

That generation (E39) of the M5 was sold in the US from 2000-2003. It didn't really matter which year of those that they picked, they probably just conveniently know a guy or found a car that happened to be an 03. The E39 generation was the only naturally aspirated V8 ever fitted to a M5, similar to the Chevy SS, and both the E39 and the new SS are of similar weights, power, speed, and design/driving philosophy. Me and my friend were trying to figure out what V8 manual sedans are sold new in the US anymore, and we could only come up with a handful; add natural aspiration, and it's really only the SS that meets those criteria.

I have absolutely become smitten with that color combination on the M5. What a lovely and classy color that Chiaretto Red is.

^ I kinda felt that this comparison test was rushed. Usually, these buff-book peeps takes their time to test olders car with fresher OEM spec (or equivalent) tire.

^ I'll never forget my experience with E39 M5. That is why I'm perplexed about on how the Pontiac G8 GXP and the Chevy SS drives.

^ You can point out that the E39's 'angel eyes' (which was pictured) were only featured in 2003, before it got replaced by the E60.

^ This alone is the reason for me that the SS is so much more desirable even compared to my wagon favorite, a certified pre-owned CTS-V. Plus the VF will be the last Aussie-American car that will ever grace in the US, which it does mean a whole lot to car fans.

~> Owh! Which one to pick!? The CTS-V Wagon or the SS? :boggled:

Angel eyes came with the facelift in 2001, so actually, a vast majority of the E39 M5s came with angel eyes. ;)

In the end, I think I would want the CTS-V, especially the new one that was just introduced. The SS is nice, but I really want the luxury of the Caddy.

It practically falls to a choice between Luxury Looks and Sports Performance or Full on Sports and Looks Performance...

Kinda makes no sense, I know.
