CHEAP Cockpit Alternatives ONLY

I used to use a MadCatz MC2 on my lap and it felt like I was a basketball player in a Daihatsu Midget. My arms were that cramped up, not straighter like they should be.
Your cockpit looks like it would put you in a fairly normal driving position. The only thing I would change would be putting the pedals a little further out in front of me, but I guess its up to personal choice.

I would suggest getting a metal barstool with a backrest and cutting the legs down so you sit lower to the ground. It feels way better than sitting in a normal chair. I see you already have a small cane chair there though.

Hopefully my cockpit will be ready soon. I'm going to get the metal in a few days and hopefully should have it done by the end of the week.

Actually......... I changed my mind. I went to a second hand shop today on the lookout for a seat for my cockpit, but came home with a really old school desk instead. It will do the job just fine. I cut slots in it for my DFGT to fit onto the folding lid which opens up with a place to store all my tunes etc. that I print out. It is very stable but i am going to screw two long bits of RHS onto the side to support it even further.

I'm not going to do much either, I've decided. I was planning on sanding it and painting it, complete with sanding sealer and matte lacquer... but I just can't afford the paint on top of a new G25 AND building a new guitar.

So all I'll do is just rig up the handbrake handle I made and be done with it :lol:

That's my one, made it for about £10. It's ok, rocks about a bit when doing drift trials flinging the wheel about but apart from that not bad. At my mates house we put the end bit under a plastic step and put the head from a 1108 FIRE engine on top which held it quite well lol

Got the idea from some guy who made one so can't take credit for the design

Going to be using it as a portable one to take to mates houses and stuff as it folds up nicely and build a more permanent one with an actual car seat and a tilted bit for the pedals to sit on for my room. Will take a look around the scrappy tomorrow and see what I can get

Here's my cheap cokpit that I just finished about an hour ago.
The pics show a few different angles of the cockpit and one is with the hinged lid open/where I keep all my GT4 stuff.

Its an old school desk with a hinged lid, but to make it a bit more ridgid it has two one metre lengths of 25x25 RHS attached to the bottom/side legs(one piece of RHS on each side. I am going to get a few pieces of bendy tube tomorrow to clean up all the cables but apart from that and a few stickers, this is how it's going to stay.
Price (in AUD):
School Desk-from second hand store- $15
RHS-from Metal supplier- $7
DFGT: $128
Bendy Pipe stuff: about $5
TV: Free but it's really crap.

Stereo & Speakers: $20 from second hand store too.

Ahh well....better than nothing.

Just an update on my cheap cockpit.
It's been in use now for over 1.5 years and it's held up very well.
It has a new seat (not just a cover) and is no longer in the living room.
It's been sent upstairs (me too!) in a spare room so Laura can have use of the living room.
I also have a different TV for it now. It's an 32" with 1080p.
Almost forgot to mention the PS3, DFGT and GT5P.
Hmm, I seem to always photo this with Lotus'.

hi. i have been reading this post for over a year now, and have decided to finally ask a question

Ive taken some serious thought about building a cockpit and even started building one, but never went through with it.
I have a G25 and a nice seat. But now i need something to put them in.
Im looking for something serious (not pvc pipe or a coffee table...) and have seen a few pics of some, but cannot seem to be able to get the plans/ dimentions of them. If any of you have ideas, please post them

BIG thanks to simul8r for putting up his plans! This is a "short" version of his setup. Short, so that it's able to be used while sitting in my favorite leather recliner, tucking the back tube of the stand under the chair to keep it in place.

I did, however, make a couple changes to his design. First, mine is all 1 1/2" PVC. Mostly because it saves a bit of money on materials. For people asking why PVC or ABS is so pricey, I'll tell you the majority of the cost is the individual connectors, not the straight pipe. 1 1/2" seems sturdy enough, but I'm thinking about making a 2" version out of ABS sometime. I also hid all but the shifter module cable inside the PVC, making the look cleaner. Lastly, and probably most notably, I mounted my pedals pendulum-style (these are the pedals I installed Frex Hall-Mag Effect pots into a while back). Makes a big difference to me.

Now, if only Polyphony would get their butts in gear and get GT5 done!

Hi Guys,

I have one of the below gaming chairs, and have ordered a G25 racing wheel,

I want to build some kind of cockpit or stand that will be good to use with this kind of chair, but havent seen anything that i think will work on this forum. I dont have a problem with drilling holes into the chair or anything like that.
I do think that my personal DIY skills might hold me back a bit, but i'm willing to give most ideas a try.

If you have any suggestions for people who have tried something similar i would be very happy.

Hey Mark, welcome to GTPlanet.

If I had the rocker chair you have I would incorporate into a setup like the one TECHNIKRS4's posted just before your post.

All you need to do is get the chair attached so as not to move.

As his is attached as a typical car seat (minus runners) see if you can attach a platform (wood, metal, etc.) to the underneath of the chair. It should have some kind of frame.
Make it wide enough so you can attach it to a flat base similiar to TECHNIKRS4's.
It only needs to be wide enough for access to the fasteners, whether bolts or screws.

Another option:
You could build a rear area for the seat to fit in and not move around. A design with a high back to it (high enough) so as to craddle the seat.
That would allow you to remove the seat and move the setup if needed.

For the 2nd one, it's probably a little too high for a sofa unless you had something to sit on that made you higher, though a cheap office chair is perfect height for it. (I have a very similar setup posted earlier in this thread)

There's some other setups in the thread though that might be a little more suited for a couch.

First post here. I got my G27 yesterday and was looking for a stand. Was thinking about ordering the WheelStandPro, but while in walmart I ran across this and thought it would be perfect. Was right. $34 well spent.

Table height can adjust and you can also rotate the part where wheel is sitting can see at http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11062631

May get something different in future but for now I'm very happy with this. Now to the tricky part. Learning how to drive this effectively. First wheel and manual.

Hey guys...I was reading this thread at work just after taking some advil for my hip pain from how I used to sit to use my wheel...

I have a nice sturdy coffee table from walmart, the parsons model or whatever... used the wheel with that and sat on a nice big bouldering pad from rock climbing. It worked fine but left me constantly moving around to get comfortable.

I was going to buy one of the mounts, then one of the chairs, etc... but instead I went to Lowes, spend $17, and made something just as nice. Copied off of the design of the guy with the Ikea chair... here is my version.

All removable, with only 4 holes in the chair that could be considered stock if you weren't paying attention. I got the hardware like I said for $17 at Lowes... I got the DFP wheel on Craigslist for $20 used. What a deal!

That looks very good for the price you got it for bbowers.

It looks very clean and would be easily able to disguise the chair as part of the furniture when needed. I was actually thinking about making the same thing a while ago after seeing the picture of some other guys rig that looks almost identical to this one. But I ended up using an old school desk instead. One question, Do you have to take the 4 wingnuts off evertime you want to get in or out? Cheers, Cougar23

Nope, I mounted it high enough that there is enough clearance to slip a leg in and slide under it. It's not hard to get in or out quickly if need be. in the future if it becomes an issue maybe I could modify it to swing out of the way or pick up off of there or something instead.
