Might be Ok to synthesize the difference between 1 type of engine to another, but what about 2 different incline 4?

Also an article about creating engine sounds for games
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/2935/capturing_engine_sounds_for_games.php

That's where the CFD comes in, you fully simulate the flow patterns through various parts of the engine (which differ from car to car, and "tune" to "tune") and then, for example, use the far-field pressure variations directly, either as samples, or as a basis for synthesis. Or at least, that's how I'd do it - I have no idea how Sonory is doing it.

Interesting article, there. 👍 Most of what he said wasn't really news to me, other than the admission that they have problems with dyno sessions and actually capturing the full range of a car's sound.

CoolColJ:
(from that article)
This is what I'm talking about.👍
I applaud the developers who are taking audio seriously and who are allowing professional sound designers to express and pursue their art form beyond traditional forms of media (i.e. film, radio and TV). It is frustrating to see so much attention being given to eye candy when sound has the potential to provide the gamer just the same amount of sensory cues. The sound of a real fully worked race engine is an incredible adrenaline pumping experience that racing games need to deliver to the gamer. Unfortunately, most racing games I've experienced have had poor sound resulting in an immediate uninstall and product return.

Griffith:
Well, if they have say , 25 under load and 25 unloaded engine samples for the range, i think that's pretty damn good for accuracy, cuz I had to do with just 3 for each + 1 separate for idle and 1 for start up...heh:P

That quote hit the nail right on the head, but some people refuse to acknowledge that as being the truth.

I wont comment anymore on how Bad Prologue is, as well how bed the DEMO videos are with sounds..

Once full game comes out, I can be sure to say if it sucks or not.

Last time I've checked, the Lexus IS F sounded super sweet as in real life.

Last night i played Shift on X360.Sound COMPLETELY sucks!!!Fist time i think - nice sound (through TV speakers ) but later i pickup some headphones (late night) and OMG!It sounds EVEN WORSER than prologue.Only thing that raises sound from the dead is DISTORTION but it sucks too, at very low RPM it destroys all the sound! It's even not crossfading smooth.
(I mean engine sound)
FM3 and TT much better.(Especially FM3 - Race McLaren and Zonda R.)

In my opinion, What GT5 is lacking in sound department is intake sound.

Hear this, a Stock M3 E46, with only a M3 CSL Airbox, the car has stock exhaust.

As you can see, the Car Guts, that heavy throaty sound GT is Lacking, is the Intake/Admision sound.

In GT5P, some cars have EVERY sound Nailed, just one problem, doesnt has that Throaty intake sound when going WOT. Try to listen carefully in GT5P the sound of the stock Viper SRT-10, Corvette Z06, Tuned 350Z...those cars have the real sound, except they dont have the proper sound when the Throttle body opens...and that my friends is a shame.

BTW, has anyone noticed that the Tuned G37 sounds like a NSX? Pretty weird, you should fire up GT5P, adjust your sound system to give lots of Bass and try that one.💡

:dunce: Don`t you just love how some knob put`s a video up on youtube about how good his car sounds only to have a repulsive disco song littered through it. We wanna hear your car not your bad tatse in music dunce :dunce:

alucard0712:
Yeah, that's a known problem, the sound seems to be amped up so much that clipping occurs(on some cars more than others), but on the other hand, we praise the likeness achieved in NFS series.👍 I could rev an engine of a car for three seconds, and you would probably guess which car it was most of the times even with your eyes closed, which sadly can't be said about GT sounds.:( For me, on a PC, the experience with Shift was quite enjoyable, but I stopped playing for a different reason, and that's a lack of challenge and arbitrary physics...

Try me ;)

And, regarding samples, I meant number of sets of samples, based on engine load - i.e. do you think only an on-load and off-load sound are enough? The article posted previously:

gamasutra
In order to capture the majority of the sonic characteristics of engines at various RPMs, a thorough understanding of the way different engine loads produce different sounds is required. This can be narrowed down to on-load, off-load and steady loads. Most of the cross-faded engine sounds in games today have on-load and off-load looped samples and the steady loads are usually a subtle blend of the two.

But the problem is, I don't like the way most games handle on-load, off-load transitions - it's too digital. Not to mention that blending on-load and off-load to make steady-load actually demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how the sounds are produced...

Idle sounds are unique, in that they capture the unsteady characteristics of whatever fueling system is in use - so the engine constantly flutters between on-load, off-load and steady-load.

That's exactly what I was going to write last night, only then I let the video play and realized the music went away. Man, I would've felt like such a knob.

Yeah.Seem to they sample each car individually.GT on the other side uses some sort of synthesis, based on car parts i think! That's most likely if you wish to sample 1000+ cars, or cars that you DON'T have (ex. McLaren F1,Kaz said that it is the car he wish to drive, but it already in-game), only model and characteristics.

Anyway through headphones it's clearly very bad!my advice - go with headphones!!!

(For me on 1st place GT5TT (most complex sound,AWESOME in headphones and with full dynamic range),Forza 3 is second (Race McLaren and Zonda R sounds very close to reality, but for example F50 not even close)

Car I want in GT5 for the noise alone: the Lancia Fulvia.

It has a 1.3 liter V4 engine, which makes a really rather wonderful and truly unique sound.

Yeah i know but that damn music keeps coming back in throughout the vid :ouch: for god`s sake just don`t put it on there please :yuck:

👍

I still think this is the best sounding car ever:

Let's hope it returns from GT2!

The Hakosuka is in GT4  I was driving one only this weekend! It's called a 2000 GT-R (KPGC10), or something...

I much prefer the Kenmeri (KPGC110) - also in GT4 - despite it being clearly (if only marginally) inferior!

But yes, straight-6s are pure sex :dopey: And they'd both better be in GT5 👍

It would be odd those 2 legendary Skylines weren't included, and yes Strittan it sounds really, really nice ( although i wouldn't say the best sounding car ever IMO ) and if they sound this way for only 80% ( if you could even measure it like that in the first place ) in GT5 i would be very satisfied.
Yes it was included in GT4, but only the street version as i recall. ;)

Griffith:
Yeah, I know you meant sets of samples. I had experience with just 2 sets of samples in all games I tried and if the samples were good, and engine could blend/interpolate nicely between them, it usually sounded satisfactory, but I think 3 sets of samples would be quite enough: throttle at 0%/50%/100% and blending in between.

I appreciate people putting up videos of great sounding cars, however it would be better if people can post cars that are in GT5P or of what we seen in the GT5 demos. Thanks alot 👍

Okey Dokey, just noticed something when I was doing the R8 time trial at Suzuka.

I always thought the in-car sounds were a little, lets say, weak? , I have a LFE shaker under my seat which rumbles when I go over the, er, rumble strips.

Anyway, I usually race in cockpit view but I decided to give the other views a go, what a difference ! Th one which shows the front of the bonnet was by far the best, I could feel the vibrations of the engine at low revs on throttle, off throttle the vibration was alot less, so I guess PD did put this car on a Dyno.

My only gripe is the fact that you need a pretty decent sound system go get the most out of GT5P, that shouldn't be the case, especially in-car with the race cars, they should be brutal.

That would be because the engine is... well, below.

You're either very ignorant, or you can't read. ;)

Which would you prefer? So maybe I overlooked the fact that you were referring to that particular variant of the car (a Hakosuka). That doesn't make me ignorant, just mildly inattentive and careless. I think it's obvious that I can read - what does your comment say about you? ;)

There are some posted earlier on in the thread, around page 20 or so, maybe earlier. 👍

Thanks alot. I was driving the Ford GT around Eiger today and it sounded so damn good, however when i saw the video of the Ford GT posted on youtube it sounded like garbage. I watched a bestmotoring episode Ford GT driven on big Willow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VSyO7PciLM comparing the two sounds it was pretty close imo. What i love about GT is the way they make the car sound differnt from interior view compared to replay mode. It gave me goosebumps when i heard the GT40 in replay mode. This was done with 5.1 i will say the sub makes a huge difference. Some cars, however need some work example the M3 It sounds good at low RPM but when it gets at high revs it sounds crazy. During replay mode it does sound a little better but again at those high revs CRAZY!

Ford GT only represents engine sound close to reality in very narrow rpm range. Lower rpm's when car is waking up from idle are off and highest rpm too, there is just missing the right sample for highest rpm with sound under load. That's very similar scheme for other engine sounds in Prologue, there is just not enough samples to represent every rpm range in distinctive way and sound is certainly lacking some irregularity, crackling, popping, backfiring and compressor whistling. Distinctive change between fully open throttle and throttle feathering alone, which is very apparent in real car, would create wonderful effect.

Ford GT sounds anything but great in Prologue. It sounds completely powerless when compared to the real thing.

The only car I remember to actually sound powerful is the Blitz Skyline because of the massive whine.

Do you have a 5.1? With the sub you get that deepness i really like the GT40 i guess we have our opinions.

You still don't get it, so I'm gonna help you. I didn't say it was in GT4, I said it was in GT2...

Gee, It's really big of you to help me out. Perhaps you missed the sub-text of my post, too?

I mentioned GT4 because it's a newer game, the assets are more up to date than those used for GT2 (presumably) so there's a higher likelihood of it being in GT5, too. But I gave you the benefit of the doubt and attempted to avoid patronising you. Oh well. :indiff:

analog got the message across, but without acting the tit...

Some Nurburgring ambient sounds - ala Prologue, as cars go around doing warmup laps. Man this Ring dates back to the same Ring in that special version of Prologue. I've see this track intro in pics dating back several years ago!
Sounds like an SLS and ZR-1 in there

edit - orange car is indeed a ZR-1, and then followed by a silver car, could be SLR
sounds decent enough
