GT4 Weekly Arcade Time Trial Challenge: Week 3
gran-turismo-4.jpg

This week’s challenge is;

Muscle Cars; Old Vs New.
The muscle cars of today drive differently to those of 45(ish) years ago. Power outputs are similar, so the largest differences between the cars of the two era’s are found in the areas of chassis, brakes, gearbox and suspension improvements (ie Handling).
This week we're going to see how much these advances help on the track.
Your primary car is one of the most iconic cars of the late 60’s/early 70’s muscle car era; the Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70, which you should find challenging to get the best out of at the undulating Infineon Sports Car Course.
However to get the time bonus you’re going to need to take a less powerful and heavier modern muscle car; the Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04 around the circuit at least a second quicker.
On paper this would seem unlikely, however driving these cars should highlight the advances that have been made in handling related technoloy between when the two cars were produced.

Track: Infineon Sports Car Course
EDIT: It's worth adding that I don't consider the area beyond the outer edge of the widest yellow line at the hairpin (approx halfway around the lap) to be part of the circuit. So at least 2 wheels on the circuit proper at all times

Primary Car: Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: S1 (Sports Hard)
Quicktune: None (Stock)

Optional Bonus Car: Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: S1 (Sports Hard)
Quicktune: None (Stock)
Optional bonus Car Time: Beat your Dodge Charger 440 R/T time by at least 1.0 second to receive a 1.0 second time bonus.

My Times (so Far)
Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70: 1:46.463
Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04: 1:44.997

These are the specs the cars should have on the track menu screen just before you start driving;
Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70: HP-375 KG-1650 Tyres-SH
Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04: HP-352 KG-1690 Tyres-SH

You have until Tuesday 22nd November 2011 1:00 PM GMT to post your best time(s) in this thread (you can edit/improve them if you wish). All other rules are as per post No1.

Good Luck.

Darn, if I had realized that the times were not averaged I would have only spent 20 laps with the race car. Does the kerb count as part of the proper circuit?

Part1; read the instructions, it only says get within the bonus time.

Part2; In post no1;
- Complete as many laps as you wish, but your submitted times must be consistent with the standard OLR rules. You should also save your ghost replays, should any verification be required.

So short answer; yes kerbs are considered part of the track. I've now added a link in the first post to the OLR rules, section 16 makes it pretty clear for what is and what isn't part of the circuit. Anyone competing should read them at least once.

Another issue, can you make sure your, first post for each week has the final times you want to submit. It makes it easier for me, and it is in the rules.

I'll trade places if it will make you feel better. 💡

There's only 4 seconds covering the whole field, which is fairly close for this sort of comp IMO. Though the M3's handling being so neutral, that it practically drives itself probably helps.

I seem to be the only contestant competing.

Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70: 1:46.901
Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04: 1:46.735

I'm just back from a 1017 mile roundtrip to San Diego. Ran my Lotus Elan today for viperin's series as that's got the most pressing deadline.
I'll be having a crack at this sometime tomorrow.
I love Infineon though! 👍

Nope, as of now you have one contender!

Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70: 1'50.962
Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04: 1'49.123

Hopefully I can get around to improving these a bit... Not tonight though, as I have a nasty headache and probably wouldn't be able to get any real improvements out of it.

More competition for you Crooooooow!

Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70: 1'45.651
Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04: 1'44.555

Loving the Charger / Infineon combo. Very tricky, but ultimately satisfying when you get that 1 lap just right.
Added the Pontiac. ;)

Can see more in the Dodge, but will then struggle to keep the Pontiac in the bonus zone.

G'Day all,
Now I am up to date with the Lotus RC, I will have some time to have a go.
I like the idea of the Charger @ Infineon also.
As the Pontiac GTO is a rebadged Holden will probably enjoy that as well !

Well, at least I won't be last for the Charger part. No offense tricd.

None taken, Crooooooow. I've known for a while that I can't drive the Charger stock, nor drive most cars on Sports tires. :scared: Maybe I'll spend this Christmas break driving on Sports... 💡

G'Day all,
Managed a few runs this morning, probably will not get another chance so here are my times :

Charger : 1 ' 48 . 606

Pontiac GTO : 1 ' 47 . 108

What a difference 40 odd years makes eh ?
Chalk and cheese.Good fun to drive particularly the Charger, just could not get all the power down wasting time with wheelspin. I guess Manual drivers would have an advantage this round.
Pontiac very good, good grip, flat through the turns, brakes light years ahead.
A bit soulless though.
Good selections.

Later.

I guess Manual drivers would have an advantage this round.

I didn't realise you didn't "row your own" gears.
There's a definite advantage in being able to downshift to 2nd to slow down into a few turns here, but upshift again quickly to 3rd to avoid wheelspin on the way through the apex which buys a whole load of time on this track. It's particularly effective in turns 4 & 7, especially if you clip the kerb inside 7b, which, if it lifts your inside rear tyre off the ground will just cause the car, with it's absence of LSD, to spin it's tyres into rubbery smoke!
The only turn I've found where it's really an advantage to come out in 2nd is the very last hairpin.
It's been ages since I drove auto, and I've never done it in GT4, but I'm sure there used to be a trick that you could hold on to a button, L1 or R1 I think on the D-pad to prevent the car changing gears. Not sure if that'd help you here but may be worth a shot.

I've just edited my Pontiac time into my initial post.

Ok here are the results for week3.

GT4 Weekly Arcade Time Trial Challenge: Week 4

This week’s challenge is;

Triple Power or One Third Weight.
This week’s challenge will pit two cars with a similar PWR but with vastly different power and weight values against one another. The first car is the miniscule 454kg Ginetta G4 '64 which due to its extremely light weight can be tricky to drive quickly. Against it will be the first (and my favorite) evolution of Godzilla the Nissan Skyline GTR ’89. To give the Ginetta the best chance of keeping, up this weeks circuit will be the very tight and twisty Motorland Reverse.

Track: Motorland Reverse

Primary Car: Ginetta G4 ‘64
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: N3 (Normal Soft)
Quicktune: None (Stock)

Optional Bonus Car: Nissan Skyline GTR ‘89
Transmission: Either
Driving Aids: Off
Tyres: N3 (Normal Soft)
Quicktune: None (Stock)
Optional bonus Car Time: You need to use the superior power of the GTR to beat your Ginetta G4 time by at least 2.0 seconds to receive a 1.0 second time bonus.

My Times (so Far)
Ginetta G4 ‘64: 49.421
Nissan Skyline GTR ‘89: 46.924

These are the specs the cars should have on the track menu screen just before you start driving;
Ginetta G4 ‘64: HP-90 KG-454 Tyres-RD (N3’s)
Nissan Skyline GTR ‘89: HP-305 KG-1430 Tyres-RD (N3’s)

You have until Tuesday 29th November 2011 1:00 PM GMT to post your best time(s) in this thread (you can edit/improve them if you wish). All other rules are as per post No1.

Good Luck.

Crap! Missed the Muscle Car deadline. :dunce: Would have only been mid-pack again anyway, FWIW...

Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70: 1'47.987
Pontiac GTO 5.7 '04: 1'46.255

I guess Manual drivers would have an advantage this round.

Only if they are good drivers to begin with. My modest skills before combined with the different physics with FM3 are creating a modest challenge. :ouch: Although I think I might be able to drop some secs if I concentrated on just GT4. But that's no fun. Gotta have' em both.

I managed to achieve better times than shotamagee this time.

Ginetta G4 ‘64: 49.070
Nissan Skyline GTR ‘89: 46.427

Mighty impressive times Eric!
I'm guessing given the slippery nature of this car on N3 (Road in NTSC) tyres, and the tight nature of this track that this combo is going to suit the drifters and DS2ists out there as it's an absolute bugger to handle with the wheel! Working on it, but 49.1xx is my best yet, but not clean so I'll not post my times yet!

Ginetta G4 ‘64: 49.075
Nissan Skyline GTR ‘89: 46.472
