To me, those sound like diesel numbers. I'd be willing to bet that while the I6 makes plenty of grunt, it's weak at higher rpms.
Yeah it's called the poor mans diesel for a reason lol. It dies at 4k. It makes almost 300 some years just of idle.
I can understand people not wanting a car that has no torque for everyday driving. When it comes to performance vehicles that aren't going to lose in a drag race to a minivan, why wouldn't you want a peaky engine? The peaks are where you're going to be at on the track, and that's the only place you actually get take a car to the limit. Why should I give a damn about torque from 0-5krpm? When am I going to be doing 2500rpm on the track?

Of course there are benefits to having extreme torque throughout the whole rev range, but that pretty much just leaves you with the corvette. Otherwise, why in the world would you have a supercharger over turbos when the top end suffers? If it makes that much of a difference to you on the road, you need to be on the track driving like that. If you're on the track, you're going to want a car with a fantastic top end anyway. That's the biggest reason I love the Coyote so much. I can't wait to have all the parts sititng in my garage thrown on it.

90% of Mustang buyers will never see the track. What it does is there is irrelevant. The car was always a nasty street machine.

It is not irrelevant. If people driving it are complaining about it not being a mean enough street machine, they're idiots that need to stop driving stupid on public roads and instead do it in a controlled environment.

Also, if you have a manual transmission, it's not hard to get the engine up to high revs if it's wiling. I do it all the time in my parents' honda Fit. It has very little low end torque, but rev it up and it comes alive.

To be fair, it's hardly the exclusive domain of a manual these days, as most automatics allow some form of manual-like control. I know the Mazda3 SkyActiv I drove recently would stay in gear all the way to redline if I wanted with its simple +/- override (though it would shift up once it hit there).

SkyActiv has some of the best autos... you can downshift even if you'll be spinning over 5k in the next gear down.

Many fancier transmissions won't allow that.

Our Hyundai Elantra has that feature. It's quite a nice autmatic, but it's still a slushbox. After a week and over 1000 miles with the Elantra, I really, really missed the manual Fit. I'm one of those people who really loves changing gear with an old fasioned lever and clutch.

Unless you of course would like to have a dead car under 5,000 rpm, all the power to you.

Implying the most recent Mustang or the next one will be "dead" under 5000 rpm

This torque fetish is getting a bit silly. It's not a 3 cylinder Fiesta.

No, I'm not saying the current one or next one will be that way. He seems to think that in order to have a fun in a car, it must be track only, or only suited to controlled enviroments.

I'm saying that you shouldn't be complaining about a car not being fast enough for the street if it's one of the fastest cars on the street. You shouldn't be driving stupid on the street anyway.

Fair enough. I see where you are coming from now.

Good to see it's not going to be a fat girl. The new Mustang is really starting to look like a legitimate competitor to modern sports cars.

+1 Bringing it back to Foxbody/SN95 Weight and size will help alot. I like the S197/SN10 Mustangs but they are a bit big and heavy.

As long as it doesn't look like this or try to be similar to this...

It'd be pretty crazy if Ford decided to go full retro and just bring back their entire time line so after 2015 types we can expect a foxbody return in 2022 and the 90s version will return in 2034 :sly:

If the car does look like the Mustang II (I say this because it sorta does from the test image though hard to tell) I'd try to make it look like this...

Gots to make it small for those skinny European roads. ;)

 I'm fine with that...

Right now it's going to come down to the styling. Ford needs to avoid another MII mishap despite the fact it sold ridiculously well. 15 inches shorter? 6.5" less wide? WHAT? That is insane but awesome! What a huge difference. If power in everything rises and if it's true what has been posted above and previously, this is could be the fastest generation Mustangs ever. The Mustang is really starting to get competitive and Chevy better have something to back on because they are going to get blown away again if they don't do something.

But for me it's all going to rely on looks. It HAS to be a Mustang.

Disregard Mustang II, all I hear is another Fox Body!

I am reading a lot of that online, its all over. People are expecting a Fox Body revival, or something in that size range.

This is an interesting render....I sort of like it.

This one is nice too.

I like it except the grill is a bit large. The rear quarter panel area and roof line are great. I love seeing all these renders it remindes me of the lead up to the S197s in '05.

Looks good, but the headlights look too small proportionally to rest of car. Also, just doesn't have that unique look that the fifth gen stang had.

Yeah it is but all Ford cars are getting large grills now. Personally thats something I don't care for but they could make it work.

EDIT:

Up close shots, you can somewhat see the front end. Looks like the bottom render I posted. Actually it looks like an extremely aggressive New Edge with a bloated front end from this past generation. Very good read and different trim is shown. One car is larger than the other.

Looks like I might be right about the fastback extending to the taillights...

You can see how high it seems compared to the way they have taped/camouflaged the driver's side window. They've fooled many into thinking it curves down that severely. I've drawn in where the brake light would be in a s197 if it were roof mounted. It falls right above the middle of the rear wheel. Compare this picture to the S550 spy shots and you see the rear window will start right around the end of the rear wheel and be much higher than would be possible from the lines you have drawn. This suggests that the roof bulge will be pushed back more, possibly more fastback or just a shorter rear window. It is anyone's guess right now but I'm just pointing out that the roofline may not be as flat as a lot of people seems to think it will be based on the location of the roof mounted brake light.

IMO best render so far.

These 3 are very nice. The blue one is one of the best renders so far IMO. Put the wheels on the blue cars from the orange car and it would be sick.
