Rain & Snow in Gran Turismo 5 - [UPDATED] finally, officially confirmed!!!!!

UPDATE:

The Tokyo Game show has provided us with a glimpse at the weather conditions in Gran Turismo 5. The rain and snow are the best looking weather effects yet seen in a racing game [as if Polyphony Digital would give us anything less than the very best :sly:].

Here is the Gran Turismo 5 Weather reveal trailer:

Here is a gameplay montage of Gran Turismo 5's amazing rain:

Here is what we know:

1). Rain and snow have finally arrived in Gran Turismo 5 👍👍👍👍👍
2). On certain stages, the weather will be dynamic, changing randomly and gradually over the course of a race [most likely during Endurance Races only]
3). Premium vehicles will feature working windshield wipers 👍
4). There is fog, as well as the fact that the weather not only changes the visuals and road conditions - but also the humidity and pressure of the track and the tires

Here is what we don't know:

1). Will the vehicles feature rain drops and snow flakes/slush on the chassis as well as the windshield/windows? 💡
2). Will all stages feature random/static weather during races?
3). Can we select a specific type of weather before a race begins?
4). Will rain wash away dirt collected on the chassis during a race?
5). Will there be standing water/puddles to drive through and during Endurance Races, do they form during the race while it rains?
6). Will there be sound effects of the rain hitting the car while in cockpit view?
7). Will there be varying degrees of rain, i.e. heavy and light showers?
8). Will there be thunder and lightning?

I hope that Polyphony Digital finds the time to add raindrops to the chassis as well, because the replays would benefit exponentially from that little detail [as would driving from a chase view if that is your cup of tea].

Here is the original post detailing Project Gotham Racing 4 and how it's weather conditions were the best at the time [As of the 2010 TGS, GT5 has shown us that it is now the reigning king of "best weather effects" :sly:]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, I have to say that I am impressed with Project Gotham Racing 4 - not that it is a great game in it's own right, but because they absolutely nailed dynamic weather.

I have not ever played PGR4 - but I am floored by how realistic the weather effects are in this game - particularly the rain effects.

Just look at this video:

And this one:

Notice how the water photo-realistically beads up on the car and the windshield - and how as the car goes faster, the water droplets realistically move upward and sideways across the windshield in real-time - affected by the speed of the car. Notice how the windshield wipers realistically clear away the rain drops? Very well done. Also of note is the thunder and lightning adding to the immersion. Great stuff.

Wow.

Next, is snow:

Well done. Well done indeed.

Here is a quote about how the weather is implemented in PGR4:

"The weather can change from sun to rain to snow to hail within a single race. A system logged on to Xbox Live will download weather data from The Weather Channel, allowing users to set in-game conditions to mirror current weather in their respective cities.

The game simulates ten types of weather, including clear days, clouds, light to stormy rain, fog, snow and even ice. In user-created races, weather is fully customizable along with all the other race variations. In the game's expanded and improved career mode, weather is predetermined, which adds an extra obstacle for players to overcome."

I don't want to harp on how much I would love it if Polyphony Digital includes rain & snow in GT5 - but how can they not if this game [released in 2007] has it and does it so incredibly well?

This game is over 3 years old and it has a feature that nothing since then has included or even topped - why is this?

I know Polyphony Digital can do weather effects better than the PGR4 team! I really want to see dynamic weather in Gran Turismo 5!

Of course rain should be included, but snow should only be in rally events. However if they're not, I won't be griping to much, I'd rather have night racing then either.

I can't say I'm real impressed by the physics, from what I see there, but can't speak well for the driver either.

Yeah, the game itself [PGR4] isn't good from what I hear and the physics are WAY off - but the implementation of weather is stunning.

I would rather have weather conditions during a race than night racing. But both would be sweet. :sly:

When the hell are races ran in snow in real life apat from rallying? GT4 had snow.

I agree it really needs dynamic weather, but snow? rain will be fine.

I played PGR4, and I don't remember the weather changing in a race. or any option to have it do so. But the weather was fun, especially the ice/snow.

^I want Hurricanes...and earthquakes as well as volcanic eruption with dynamic ash to fly around...

I think they're doing stuff like that in another game called "Split/Second"

Racing in a Hurricane would be stupid. same thing with a Volcanic eruption.

I heard racing in a hurricane is a thrill, but PD will have to really get to crackin' on damage if they can implement hurricanes.

And the volcanic eruption can be a rally stage, where you have to avoid the flowing lava. Again damage is the limiting factor here.

The problems with PGR4 are:
1- The weather is not dynamic.
2- The circuits were daytime or nighttime but there wasn´t enough space in the DVD to fit both texture packs for every circuit.
3- Half of the circuits were the same as in PGR3.
4- 30 fps.
5- Cars looked great, but there were not so many. ¿About 200?

There really is nothing to compare here.

Regards

We are not comparing anything. :sly:

PGR4 has amazing weather effects on top of a sub-par game. I want to see GT5 top this game in the area of rain & snow.

That is my point. It should be included because it adds to the realism and immersion of feeling as though you are actually racing and as such, GT5 would be a better game if weather is implemented.

I believe at this point hoping/guessing or any kind of yearning is purely academic. The only thing up for discussion is perhaps the damage system but all else is either implemented in the game already or has fallen off to the wayside (due to resources, time and the PS3's capability). The wise thing to do is to wait till TGS when more details will be forwarded.

Lol PS2, what do you expect?
The SuperCar Challenge rain is the same as in Ferrari Challenge (PS3 of course).

Btw. that snow stuff from PGR4 wouldnt work in GT5 (only for time trials), dont want to drive a race with realistic physics in conditions like that.

Really? Never played it? You should've seen what it looked like in Las Vegas at night during the rain! Wow, best weather effects I have ever seen. PGR4 was an awesome racing game but it was so underrated when it released which surprised me. The only thing that needed work was the clunky menu system...I couldn't stand it for some reason! Especially when I wanted to do a quick race...you had to set all of the AI difficulty for each car separately...what a pain. But other than that, the game was the best installment in the PGR4 series. Bizarre Creations, the guys behind the game, are now creating Blur which I cannot wait for. :)

I do hope that GT5 pulls off weather in this way and that it was not just an after thought. Realistically, it doesn't need downpours in it simply because races usually stop during that but light rain with awesome road reflection effects would be sweet.

Snow is definitely needed for tracks like Chamonix and hopefully some of the rally stages for the WRC mode. But I dont think its that important for 'normal' racing (how often do you see racing in the snow on a 'real' track?

Rain on the other hand is really important to me, given how rain can completely change the nature of a race I'd love to see dynamic weather on longer races so you have to make the decision whether or not to pit in and put a set of wets on!

Kazunori Yamauchi has been talking about including rain in Gran Turismo 5 for about 4 years now. We haven't seen anything definitive about it yet - but hopefully at the TGS next month everything will be revealed - and hopefully that means rain too. :sly:

Even though it hasn't been confirmed yet, it's still a feature that PD talked about delivering, and with titles like PGR4 that have already done it [and done it really well], you would think that PD would want to include weather if for nothing else, but to further the immersion of their simulation to increase the realism it offers. Also, weather would give us a challenging obstacle to overcome that is new and exciting; a change from what was on offer in past GT titles. [that and I bet PD can do rain effects like nobody else could! :sly:]

Super car challenge also does the rain effects, as well as ferrari challenge.

Even though the graphics in Super Car Challenge are nowhere near Gran Turismo 5 - I enjoyed that video you posted because it was atmospheric and it looked really fun! They did a really good job with the sound effects and the rain falling/hitting the windshield were also done pretty well.

Does PD need a license for Rain & Snow?

LOL! 👍

Maybe I should check it out - since I am going on and on about how great the rain effects are! :sly:

Seriously, the texture they apply to the cars in PGR4 for the rain droplets is near-perfect. I can't think of a way to improve it - other than to make those droplets move with the peed of the car like they do on the windshield.

snow will most likely be in for the snow rally stages :P (even though it'll just be on the ground, who knows if PD will add snowing on the screen!)

No they don't. I just said that because of his post. It seemed.. stupid. Just cause something is in real life doesn't mean we don't want it in a game.

Stupid only if you want to get picky on the post.

I assume you meant "doesn't mean we want it in the game", right? If that's the case, allow me to disagree with you, because snow and rain would greatly affect the outcome of a race. I'm not so sure about snow during a race, but rain should be there for sure. They are also a natural phenomenom.
