Rain & Snow in Gran Turismo 5 - [UPDATED] finally, officially confirmed!!!!!

is that Tiff Needell's voice at the beginning? , Im really tempted to buy this game, Ferrari challenge got great reviews.

Yep, Tiff is the driving instructor. The only problem is that Ferrari Challenge isn't really any good. I found myself putting it completely aside for GT5 Prologue.

As for rain and snow, I would love to see them obviously. But I won't be crushed if it isn't included. I would rather have it than damage though.

I just can't stand the sound of shifting in Ferrari and Supercar Challenge... It sounds absolutely ridiculous. Can't even describe it but it's so painful to my ears the way the engine sounds while you shift... What a joke.

Amen on that... sounds like the clutch is made of tissue paper...

"The weather can change from sun to rain to snow to hail within a single race. A system logged on to Xbox Live will download weather data from The Weather Channel, allowing users to set in-game conditions to mirror current weather in their respective cities."

If GT5 would have a something close to this it would be great. But.... i see a problem here. If snow is included, does it mean that i will have to drive around on snowy tracks for 3 months a year just because i live in Sweden?

Just a thought :)

I don't want to get into the merits of Ferrari Challenge but I think it is actually quite a good game, including the sound effects.

Back on topic, the FC rain effects are quite good and it would be nice to see something like it or better in GT5 (we had rain in GT4 but I wasn't that impressed). Of course I'd like the weather to be dynamic and move in across the track, or just touch part of the track. I'd also like to see puddles and the little streams and standing water you get on tracks which appear when the rain gets very heavy. Then a drying line should appear as the rain goes.

Perhaps it does sound a lot to ask for (which was probably the point of the factitious comment about earth quakes), but given FC and GT4 I'd like to see GT5 move the "game" on again.......

Was enough for me to shelve the game within 2 days of buying it... I really wanted to like this game cause i have such a passion for Ferrari.. but that shifting is simply horrendous... reinforces that value sound plays in a game :)

I want cows.

Oh, I thought this was another wish-list thread. Sorry...

👎

@Black Chamber: thanks for the videos.. looks really great the 1st one when we have a close image at the vette where we can see the effect of the rain over the car.. i think we'll be surprised when we get GT5 full game... with that amazing effects :)

He's busting up the Ferrari!
Sorry, Back on topic, I think it would be nice to have weather.

Yeah the rain and sun effects (in free practice, you start early in the morning and the sun rises in realtime) in F1:CE are sick.

I really have no idea how they can implement weather or even night effects, when they've maxed out the PS3 already.

Rain = reflections and tons of particle effects,

Night = many sources of light.

As I understand it, these things eat up the processing power, so I just wonder how it's going to happen. I pray that it does - it would be incredible! But how in the world are they going to pull it off?

We already have the informnation of the weather by place, in the main menu screen, so it would be great have same weather in the race track too...

With night racing they can lower texture quality because it is dark and you cant notice it.

Rain, i really dunno but im positive they will atleast have wet tracks.

I would place all the money i am ever gonna earn for the rest of my life that this game will have night racing and wet tracks though. For the simple reason that every other GT has had them.

You could always turn that feature off, you know. :sly:

Day racing uses HDR lighting, which is incredibly processor intensive. With 16 cars going around the track, mapping HDR lighting and shadows to the vehicles, the tracks and the surroundings is far more processor heavy than say, a cloudy, HDR-less day; or a heavily dark, overcast sky with heavy rain falling.

Night racing would just use ray-tracing and bloom - for the headlights, streaking taillights and the assorted track-side lighting - but not HDR, as that is usually solar-specific, to create a realistic hue to emulate the radiance of the Sun.

Check out this review for PGR4:

Not only is this game 2 years old, but they didn't have the advantages Polyphony Digital has:

  • One of the most experienced and talented group of programmers in the world - with over 10 years of experience
  • Sony's Blu-Ray storage medium - getting all the data for rain [wet textures for the vehicles and the tarmac] and other weather modes wouldn't be a stretch to include, having a dual-layer 50GB Blu-Ray disc as a storage medium

While the effects etc. are nice, the game is not as epic as you think.
Btw. Bizarre creations have 10 years of experience, they have lots of money (or had at this time, the game is published by Microsoft) and it has some major flaws also in the graphics (especially the shadows, in photomode cars often look like theyre pasted into the scene), i also dont find the rain effects on the windscreen, nor the spray behind the cars too great (again, F1:CE ftw).

I know PGR4 wasn't a great game or anything - but for it's time - graphically, it was a titan!

We all know Gran Turismo 5 will be the best looking racing game ever made - but just look at these screenshots of the in-game rain effects from PGR4 on the cars and track:

This one is pretty amazing for a 2-year old game

One of my favorites. The rain textures on the car model make the vehicle look nearly photo-realistic.

Again, excellent rain drop texturing. I can't wait to see what PD does with rain in GT5!

This one isn't about the rain - it just looks very photo-realistic. I had to look twice to make sure it wasn't from a Gran Turismo game! :sly:

If Bizarre Creations can do this with the technology they had 2 years ago, Polyphony Digital can do even better today with rain in Gran Turismo 5.

We already have the informnation of the weather by place, in the main menu screen, so it would be great have same weather in the race track too...

I keep thinking about that feature in GT5P - maybe that is a hint to players that weather will most assuredly be in the final build of GT5? What other reason would we need to see it? :sly:

I will enjoy GT5 more if there is weather. Rain is my biggest hope, but snow and fog are great too and as they occur in reality - Polyphony Digital should include them. Add to that statement, Kazunori Yamauchi stating multiple times that they are working on rain and rain effects for GT5 and we may have a winner!

Let's hope so. 👍

Agreed on everything BC.

Thanks for those screens of PGR4. They do look incredible, and they make me realise that weather will give GT5 a huge amount more atmosphere, which I think the series really really needs.

The weather locations on GT5P are just too much of a clue. If it's all dynamic, then it's going to be just incredible. It makes me quiver with excitement!

Also this: https://www.gtplanet.net/weather-changes-night-racing-in-gran-turismo-5/

Here Kaz confirms that they are working on damage and changing weather, and night racing. We've seen the proof of the damage, now show us the weather!!

Hey everyone, Altho I agree 100% rain and later snow should be implemeted into the game, both for track and cars...

First I think PD team should put 100% effort in Day and Night LIVE change, as well Cold and Hot day in game BEFORE attempting rain and snow.

They should really make cold nights, hot days.. or even take LIVE weather report and try to duplicate how hot or cold is it during that location, as well correct time. This is way more important for me because 80-90% of races are during dry days. As well It would be nice for 8 hour to 24 hour racing..

Then after they get Day and Night live change, as well Weather, then they should work on rain and snow.

And here is the English translation of exactly what he said about it:

Kazunori Yamauchi
"GT5 will offer a wider selection of vehicles and tracks. And we will provide more features for online communities.
We are also working at full speed to create lifelike graphics
that depict rain and the night
.

We are currently working on simulating changing
weather conditions that can affect the race
.
And we will soon also be able to simulate damage
to the race cars."

Exactly. I considered getting this game but this really turned me away. I can't stand it. Sound is so important and while GT may be a bit tame, it's much better than having it sound like that.

You know, think weather and day to night changes are one of those suprises that Kaz mentioned. I remain optimistic for TGS.

It's been long enough - Gran Turismo 5 needs weather and night racing!

Was there even a night racing course in GT4?

Yeah hopefully you can choose to race any track at night, day or changeable in GT5.
Im not a fan of the GT4 night tracks though. I just prefer the naturally lit ones.
But it would be cool to race night with just the headlights although I'd say it will be much harder until you know the track inside out.

Aside from one or two rally courses - what other night courses were there in GT4?
