This is a question that has just come across my mind. I have 25 infraction points for lazy grammar and mentioning piracy (I'm not proud of it) And have realised that if I make one sloppy post again I could be banned. I don't intend to obviously. Is the ban you get permenant or temporary.

Hope this isn't a stupid question. It just got me thinking because If I do something stupid it could effect me quite easily.

Thanks
Luke

I've got 25 for general stupidity when I was younger. I'd be more than glad to undo all of my infractions, but alas, I cannot. When I got up to 25, I realized I didn't get it, so I took the summer off of GTP to get my act together. I think I managed to, but I still don't have that safety net in case I forget a rule or two.

It may or may not be temporary - it depends on the infraction. A few months ago, I provided the staff with the option to let infraction points expire after 15 or 30 days. If it expires, you will regain access to your account. If not, it will remain banned permanently.

Yes, it's up to the moderator who issues the infraction, and I also issue infractions myself if I come across AUP violations.

If we recognize them, they'll just be banned again.

Posting style and mannerisms usually tips us off to do further investigation into IP addresses.

I was wondering, if a person gets banned for a once in a year oversight of the rules, and then comes back after, say, another year, would you overlook that?

Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on the situation and the user in question.

Here is a tip: Use the Preview Post button, read what you typed out loud, and even copy & paste into Word (with grammar and spell checker) if necessary. Also, my general rule is: If I wouldn't say it in front of my 95-year-old grandmother or a law enforcement officer I shouldn't post it.

What if the person gets banned and then just sets up a new account with all new information?
You can see a history of people attempting this in the Banned User Log. They get caught. They (almost) always get caught.

Another question.

Is there a limit to how many warnings you can get?

Those things are apparently attracted to me :/...

Despite getting being at the 25 point limit (usually means one more strike and you're out), it's a good wake-up call, last-chance status thing. I've seen many users (myself included) who have been around for years after making it to 25 points. My point is that don't think that because you're at 25 points it means you're almost out, it's a good way to stop and take a look at what you're doing and think if you really want to be around in the future.

Incidentally, I got all my 25 points in one sitting, meaning I made one major screw-up and put myself on last-chance status. Depending on your posting style, you could end up reaching 25 points by making little screw ups here and there.

How do you receive these infraction points? By PM, email? Where can I check if I received infraction points in the years I've been a member?

On your user control panel, it should show below your subscribed threads. It does for me, at least.

And yeah, I don't consider me being at 25 meaning I'm almost banned; I plan to stick around here for years to come, I see it as having no safety net in case I do something really stupid without thinking.

You'll be notified by PM if you receive an official warning or infraction. If you have received either, they should be displayed in user control panel ("My GTPlanet").

I've always wondered what happens if you get banned as a GT Premium member. Since it's good until what, 2030 (don't recall exactly) do you get a full refund, or a pro-rated refund of the time remaining or no refund at all?

Hey Jordan,
You said "investigation of the IP adress". What investigation do you mean exactly?
Why do you want to know? ;) Aside from obvious matches, we check to see if they're from the same ISP, geographical region, or if a proxy server is being used.

No refund is issued if a Premium member's account is banished.

...and because its in the premo section....
How I miss premo and too bad I need money for it too to change my name.
Back to on topic discussion, would premo members have more slack (infraction wise) than non-premo members?
