There have been many great contributions about this particular event scattered throughout multiple and often unrelated threads. It seems like it might be a useful tool to have a thread that focuses on this combo, so that people can refer to it as a study guide and/or a place to contribute their expertise.

Please help to keep this thread as free of noise as possible, and focus the discussion on the Rome Reverse challenge, so readers can get the infomation they need without having to sift through the usual other fun stuff. Also, feel free to use the turn numbers in the above track map as a discussion tool.

Enjoy!

Can someone give me any advice as to how to do turn's 7 to 8 ?? That turn seems to be keeping me from getting close to the top 10 ...urrr.

At about half way between the 100 and 50 marker, hit the brakes down to about 84 or so and point your car straight into the corner. Your car will slide a bit but if you do it right, you will get a very fast exit.

i keep having trouble with turn 9, either i brake too early or too late. i need a good marker, also i dont care about winning at all, the sole reason im doing this is a chance to drive a real track car on a real track. im broke and will always be broke but this is as far as i can see a way to live that, even for a moment

If you can get the kink right you need to be braking about 1-2 car lengths before the orange curb on the right side of the track starts. Start there and adjust as needed, getting T7&8 correct makes a big difference in your speed at the end of the straight though.

fwiw i get on the brakes for turn 9 about 1 1/2 car lengths before the rumble strip, then use that rumble strip to kick the back end out.

For me, turn 7 and 9 are my biggest hurdles to setting a quick lap. One mistake in those corners ruins the laps.

I do the same thing on turn 9.

I used the ghost car from the leader to see how to do this. But he is so far gone by turn nine I have no idea where he is braking!
But I have hit turn 7-8 pretty good a couple times - very exciting at 85mph + right by the wall!

Choate has a great approach, that's exactly what I try to do. Basically as soon as I can clearly see the rumble strips I hit the brakes. It's more of a feel thing depending on how quickly I come through 7/8. If I can carry a bit of speed I'm on the brakes as soon as those strips appear. If I'm a little slower, I'll wait until I'm almost on the strips. Sometimes those rumble strips can help turn in, but I try to keep that corner to 0 sliding.

I just need to string a good lap together. I ran a 1:22.2 on an out-lap last night, eventually a 1:22.1, but I blew a 1:21.8 or .9 bad by literally crashing in the last corner.

For those who are trying to follow a ghost - grab the 10th place ghost, not the 1st place ghost. You'll have an easier (slightly) time keeping up, and although it's not literally the fastest, you'll probably learn a little more. Also before you load the ghost, watch it a few times by itself. Try to notice reference points for braking, turn in, when/how much gas is applied. Don't focus on actual speeds in any corners. Hit your marks first, and speed will come later.

A little history nugget on the racing surface - if the cobble section feels slick slick that's because it is. 2 years ago I was in Rome on my honeymoon and that exact stretch of road between the Forum and the Colosseum 2000 years old. The city pealed back layers and layers of road and stopped once they got back to the time of Emperor Nero (basically each emperor redid the road so there are dozens of layers even underneath). At least this is what the tour guide told me... It was literally challenging to walk on - very uneven and pretty slippery. If anything the game is generous with the grip you get through this section.

Assuming you carry good speed on 1 and 2, 7,8, and 9 is where I generally gain or lose.
9 being the being the hardist to get just right.
A good line through 11-12 and your home free.

Yah thats a sick time. When I ran my 1:21.4 I knew that on a perfect lap I could do 1:21.250. Id be 1.5 car lengths up on my ghost by the end of the long straight. I guess Kris just nailed it.

I think most of my time is lost on 7 and 9...every where else seems to be alright with maybe a little loss of time. I can usually stay inside the ghost until those corners.

The better I get in 7 and 9 I’m finding out that they are dealt with in different ways. In 7 I slide long and hook late, in 9 I hook late and slide long.

This is a tricky track. Based on my best sectors, 1.21.1, or even faster is possible with absolute perfection. I just can't seem to get together but have a decent time of 1.21.5xx. Turn 9 is vital to the lap, aside from the kink. Both are very tough to get right, even tougher to get the both right on the same lap.

+1 I can consistently be hundredths of a second off Appalachian_Kris through sector 1, then +0.3xx on the second sector. I hate that damn kink :banghead:

<rant begin> I hate this track. The environment isn't that realistic to current day Rome, the texture of the road is done poorly, the track has a terrible flow (at least in Reverse), and that kink is ridiculous (I hit it "fast" like 1/10 times, then you just hope you went through sector 1 perfectly and don't F up the hairpin)...I only do time trials here when I'm at a wall with Tsukuba or the Cape (neither of which I really enjoy). <rant end>

Once .2's and .3's are more common place, I'll give it another go to try to match.

Off topic - what island are you from? A bunch of my best friends at CU-Boulder (class of 07) were from Oahu, and strangely enough it seems like all the locals w/in a given island know each other.

Rome is a very simple track. The only place I loose ALL MY TIME is that kink. I hate that turn very badly. Its like going to Vegas and rolling the dice...my odds are 1/22 I hit that turn perfect. Aye.

Although I run barely 100 laps there...so I still have some work to do

I'm on Oahu also and you're right, everywhere you go you see people you know, or know of.

Improved my time to a 1.21.8xx (-.1xx) tonight, but still searching for 2-3 tenths of a second. Puts me 13th in the SE and 53 overall.
Would have been a bit better, but on the last turn I turned in too shallow and lost some time.

This track is not really my favorite in reverse, but if you can hit that kink perfect it feels beautiful, I always get really nervous for the hairpin if I end up hitting the kink right. I got to 75th in West after one decent session, I will try more later when I start getting bumped back, right now its time to take a break then tackle the cape, which I have been dreading...guhhhh

On a roll tonight I guess. Just used GTP_TheCheef's ghost to follow here and after about 20 laps ran a 1:21.633 good enough for 7th in the West. 👍

I do want to thank TRC_Hunk for the bungie cord idea. That has really helped me with my throttle control coming out of corners. :)

I wish I could take credit for the idea but I cant, I just made the vid. I actually got the idea from a GTP member here who directed me to a thread about pedals mods.

Your welcome anyway though! Seems like at least making the video got the mod more widely recognized.

I ended up using an adjustable bungee cord for the gas pedal because the 18" cord was too tight. However the 18" cord is perfect for the brake pedal. 👍

I want to try the bungie cord mod. But what are you going to do when you get to the finals in person. I don't think they'll be allowing mods to their setups. If you learn on what you're going to get when you're there in person, I'd see that as a huge advantage.

wow what a difference turns 11 and 12 make!! i spent 2 hours working my time up in such small increments, and then i watched TRC_Hunk's lap, saw how to properly take that corner, and shaved a full .500 seconds off my time to 1:22.768!
