Discuss the upcoming Euro 2012.

Will it be Spain again? A favorite team? Expecting any surprises?

The groups are as follows.

Group B is rightfully dubbed the "group of death" with Denmark seen as the only clear outsider. Personally I believe Germany will have a hard time passing through and believe Holland will certainly pass through.

For my country, Greece, I hope we pass the group stage but think Russia and Czechia have the first word and higher probabilities to pass.

For groups C and D there are definite favorites.

I'm also thinking of putting a few money on the small teams paying very high odds.
If I lose it's not by much but if I win! 💡

My Portugal is screwed but it might work for them... If teams go in overconfident, like Germany and Holland, then we might pull it off but to be honest we struggled in the group stage, axed our coach, and still are in question since the current coach doesn't want to even consider playing Bosingwa or Ricardo Carvalho when there currently isn't a better RB option (J. Perreira is good but not Bosi good, and RC would be perfect sub or for experience on the bench in his last games for Portugal).

I have little confidence Portugal will advance but will still be rooting for them big time.

Downing and Carroll is laughable. Even Henderson made the stand by list.. What?

No Carrick, Johnson, Richards, Lennon, Crouch? Same old typical England. Isn't Parker supposed to be injured as well?

Rooney is suspended for the first two games, Parker, Cahill, Gerrard and Welbeck are all currently listed as injured.

Carroll is the big gamble - but I'm not sure that Crouch would do any better, TBH. But with Rooney out for the first two games, that puts alot of pressure on Carroll to perform.

I'm a bit surprised that Phil Jones gets a spot - he was shocking the last time I saw him play, and Downing is a gamble as well.

And the biggest shockers to me is how Hugo Viana was not called up, but Ruben Micael (amongs others) were. Also, Eduardo, Portugal's former #1, has not played practically the entire season yet gets the #2 keeper call up. I just don't get it.

But we'll see!!! BRING ON THE EURO! BRING ON THE GROUP OF DEATH!!!! :nervous:

Carroll is the big gamble - but I'm not sure that Crouch would do any better, TBH. But with Rooney out for the first two games, that puts alot of pressure on Carroll to perform.

I'm a bit surprised that Phil Jones gets a spot - he was shocking the last time I saw him play, and Downing is a gamble as well.

Jones had such a great start to the season then he just fizzled out, so you don't really know what will happen with him.

Crouch has got 22 goals in 42 games for England. He's got the experience at the big tournaments and can come on late in the game to snatch a goal. I think he's under-rated, everybody just looks past him.

I do think Carroll has got some strengths to his game when he's on it. Holding the ball up, strong etc. But I agree he is a gamble, I still would of taken Crouch/Sturrige over him. Hopefully he'll continue his end of season form and surprise us all. Needs a haircut though.

a bit surprised to see carroll in there..he did play well in the last month or so of the season (3 goals in his last 7) but the rest of the season was a bit crap (7 in his first 40!)

i agree with ruddy and oxlade-chamberlain being in there..they both have have had very good seasons..chamberlain espacially!

and i think itll be either spain or germany to win it

That strike force looks painfully weak. Should have given Crouch and Holt a place. It seems everyone loves Crouch, yet he hardly ever plays.

But how Downing got into the squad is beyond me. Holt deserved to be on standby at least, but with Ruddy in and Ferdinand out for example, it's good to see that Roy is trying something different, which is what everybody has been asking of the English national team. Something different.

First two games aside, Rooney + Defoe/Welbeck looks promising. For them, at least. As our biggest and somewhat only rival, I'd like England to lose. But it's hard to not comment on them given that I follow the English leagues and am exposed to so much of the national team in the media. But I like Hodgson, so I hope he can at least prove the critics wrong.

I'm not sure if that was a bit sarcastic or not but somehow I don't think Ruddy is the answer to England's woes. They say to try something different, but what can he do in terms of the players, Capello picked the right players for the WC I think, except Green. The biggest problem with England is that they always look so awkward in possession, too rigid and scared.

Rooney is so overhyped it's unreal. I cannot fathom how every single pundit constantly rates him as if he's a national treasure. He constantly loses possession through passing and dribbling. He's not even that good at shooting. Sure, he gets lots of goals but how many of those are from tap ins and penalties ? I took great pleasure in reading Steven Howard's countdown which placed Rooney as the best player in the world prior to the world cup. Great stuff 👍

I'm interested to know what Rooney is thought of outside of England. Pretty much any non United fan around here thinks he is overhyped.

As a fellow Welshman I'l probably half heartedly support England again, it's hard not to when the media is so England eccentric and they are the closest geographically.

I'll be backing England, because I hate this crap about Scottish people not being allowed to support England - and not least because I've had so many great times with my mates watching England games. I don't always support England (as is my right as a non-Englishman) and I even almost got thrown out of a pub for daring to show dissent (when Capital FM were broadcasting live from the pub we were in, and practically forced us to cheer for England at their beck and call!)... That said, the closest I have ever been to a fight over such trivialities was when a friend's boyfriend took me to task for daring to show any support for England, and practically called me a traitor for doing so. To that I say, screw you and get a life... it's sport, it's a bit of fun, and don't dare try to tell me who I can support. To that I say, screw you and get a life... it's sport, it's a bit of fun, and don't dare try to tell me who I can support. I'll be watching England this year remembering my mate Stewart, a great friend, avid football fan and team mate from my 5-a-side days who passed away last year - and any racist arseholes who think it's traitorous to support England can swivel on it.

Oh, of course that goes without saying. It's only a sport and one is free to choose whom one supports. And my own decision is to not support England. ABE is just jesting.

I can't say I do know many people who would go so far as to think of treason if you supported England, but I do know some people who can't understand why I support Wales instead of England. I could, for exmaple, understand that if someone was so passionate about Manchester they could support both City and United. It's logical. I also understand how some people look for superiority within the same area which both sets of supporters are proud of. Rivalries are fun if taken lightly, and there's no reason why someone can't support whomever they want.

Sorry to hear about your friend, hope you enjoy the tournament!

I'm predicting a repeat of the World Cup; it's going to be Spain vs. The Netherlands.

I'm sort of supporting England because they're part of the UK. Anyone who gets worked up if you support a different country is off their head, although sayng that I would never tell anyone I know personally I was supporting England :scared:

Echo that sentiment about Belgium; Hazard, Witsel, Lukaku .... Really hope they get in the WC. Their squad is one of the best in Europe, much better than Slovenia, Slovakia etc in my opinion.

The Dutch need to escape the group of death first, as do the Germans. Both Portugal and Denmark are a threat, no matter which way you cut it. And I have very little faith in my Portugal, but still got faith :dunce:

They only played their B team but they lost 5-3 against Switzerland and were not worth their three goals.

We were pretty bad there. England did win 1-0 but it was more 50/50 than England dominating. Worry being that Norway were all over us in parts of the second half. Went downhill after the first 10 minutes.
