Stupid review!

Some points are pretty valid actually. I agree that GT4 is 'not a good racing game'. It is a good driving game, but to be honest the racing is terrible. He's also correct about the retarded AI.

I agree with him on the AI, but I think the racing's pretty good. But, I mean, car shaped turd in a box? I hate his guts.

The review was stupid, he makes the odd good point such as the AI and the actual racing not being the most exciting thing in the game, but right from his talking about the graphics being poor to critiscising the photomode for being there because the phot's looks so good (better there than not don't you think) you could tell that this guy wasn't going to be willing to say anything positve even if it slapped him in the face. Yes it's his opinion, is uit a genuine opinion or one simply to annoy GT4 fans. Also theres a hell of a lot of errors in there such as the ASM on rally license tests being stupid, there is none.

In fact he does say something positive...

did he? He say's it handles better than GT3, but he didn't sound like he thought GT3 handled very well. He does say the game's good for car porn I guess .

One unquestionable plus about the game is its selection of courses.

I think it's true period.
Graphics didnt impress me either, from my own gallery experience, the cars can actually be very pixelated.

I read that review a while ago, and I happen to agree with him on almost every point (the photomode rant is a little weird tough, and I disagree wiht his stance on B-spec mode). The tuning in GT4 is ass-backwards compared to GT3. GT3 looked better on many fronts (such as texture modeling on the cars). The AI was at least difficult in GT3, without being unfair (as in the Speedster races). The cars drove like cars, and not things on rails (I can truthfully say that I have never spun a car out on GT4 due to oversteer). Rally racing in 4 is horrible. The Menu system no wheres near as good as it was in GT3. Other than the fact that there are many more tracks in GT4, the only real advantages to #4 in my mind is car selection, ability to rewin cars, ability to add downforce to street cars and Hi-Def mode, which then makes it look about as good as GT3 did. He did bash the game a bit much, but underneath his bashings I think he actually gave pretty good reasons.

lol @ some of you fanboys. :P he did have a few good things to say. overall i thought it was a bit funny and i agree with a few things he said.

So should you buy it? Well, if you want to buy my copy for $45 and save yourself about $10 on what it would cost you at Best Buy after tax, drop me a line. Otherwise: it depends on your motivation. If you're looking for car porn, and the USB photo feature sounds appealing to you, and you like the idea of having a semi-interactive catalog of cars from around the world, I think you can justify the purchase. If you're looking for a good driving simulator, I think you will be disappointed, and perhaps you should wait a few months until prices start to drop. If you're looking for a good racing game, no, you should not buy Gran Turismo 4.
Why doesnt this guy just go buy PGR3?

A very restrained & accurately written reply by the Interceptor. You must be a patient chap, well done.

I think he had some valid points, especially about the AI, but on the other hand I thought he needed to learn how to drive. I don´t really think the understeer in GT4 is unrealistic at all, it´s just a matter of braking in time.
And the graphics aren´t that bad, are they? I think the game looks pretty good, compared to most other games of the same generation.
But all in all, he made a fun, entertaining review of something he did not like. I´m surprised he didn´t mension the very stupid 5 sec penalties though.

I wrote down my review of his "review" in the comments. :sly:

the Interceptor

i was about to do the same thing but i saw you took care of it for me

that is giving a better "review" or "opinion"

EDIT: i also put something

1. I'll agree that people are entitled to their opinions
2. I hated the review because he is bashing an awesome game
3. It reminded me of a guy named Adam Sessler on a show called XPlay where they review video games, with a woman named Morgan Web but it's on a channel called G4Tech TV
4. I think this guy just hated the game because it didn't look good on his HDTV

But it was a funny and hilarious review

Hi! Wow, thanks for all the responses. I probably won't stick around too much, but I had a few words.

Interceptor: thanks for your thoughtful, well-worded reply. I find it interesting that you actually agree with many of my points, but disliked the tone of my piece because it's opinionated. You imply that a review should not be a "summary of experiences I gathered playing GT4", but should somehow be "neutral." I respectfully disagree. In fact, I'll propose to you that the reason most videogame reviews suck is because the reviewers are trying so hard to be "neutral" so they can keep getting the supply of free games. I have no interest in being neutral. I play the games. I tell you when I think they're great. I tell you when I think they suck. I tell you when I think they're just OK, or when they're only a little bad. That's not neutral. It's my opinion. That's what, in my mind, a review should be.

To the guys who think I'm gay (what's wrong with being gay?) or that I should kill myself because I don't like their favoritest game evar!!!! (whaHUH?) er, good luck working out those emotional issues. If you think it's a personal attack on you that a reviewer thinks that some game you like is boring, I think you're going to find that life is full of many disappointments.

I can't fault the author for being an individual with opinions and taking a critical look at the game instead of immediately buying into all the hype and fanfare surrounding it [as the majority of the people 'outraged' by his review seem to have done]. Actually, if you look past perterb's sometimes ebullient choice of words, I do have to agree with the majority of the review.

The AI is bad and the physics are a little quirky [particularly if you for some reason choose to use ASM].
I've always thought the city layout to navigate the GT mode was a nuissance, even since the first GT - GT4 is by far the worst game in the series for this.
The scrolling text descriptions of cars is annoying [a small issue, but it is something I enjoy reading]
The choice of cars in the game is overly redundant and strongly biased toward a Japanese market [certainly this is to be expected, but still a point to complain about]. 700 cars are welcome, but make it 700 cars worth driving please.

The only points I disagree on are those about the original tracks and about GT3 looking better than GT4. For everything else, I think he is fully within his right to criticize the game.

But, it has to be said, even with these imperfections, GT4 is still leaps and bounds ahead of all other racing games I've played on the PS2.

so, to perterb: 👍
Good stuff for keeping yourself above all the poo-flinging and namecalling that followed your review and sticking to your principles. I don't think your opinions required any justification beyond what was presented in the review, but I am glad to read in the above post that you weren't hating simply for the sake of hate.

Wow, when one person says that the graphics on GT4 sucks, everybody says the same thing. Is this peer pressure or what?? 💡

its not peer pressure, its looking too close and too hard at the screen.
people, guess what: Every game has pixelation. the perfect game does not exist yet!!!

Everything in this review is either completely true, or just funny.

Although I must admit that GT4 is one of the prettiest games on the PS2, and a prettier game than many games on more powerful systems, including Forza -- there really wasn't much that changed from GT3. In some ways, I agree with him that GT3 looks better.

He's right when he says the physics are very wonky, ASM or not. Pretty much anything that involves a loss of traction is just wrong. Understeer is too severe, especially because banking doesn't help you in corners. Oversteer is just weird, because the laws of momentum and inertia are all screwed up -- even in a RWD car, your front wheels will pull you out of a drift as if you were driving a FWD car. Wheelspin affects your speed but not your direction of travel. The handbrake is useless. Donuts don't work. Wheelspin, once started, takes way, way, way too long to stop. Brake dive is way too pronounced. Initiating oversteer mid-corner in a powerful RWD car is too difficult -- in fact, you can use way too much throttle and braking mid-corner and not be punished for it. Everything about the way the cars move is lifeless and artificial, and instead of being able to feel their weight, they just feel like empty, balsa-wood mock-ups. Instead of shifting around on their suspensions, cars feel more like car-shaped bricks with wheels attached...

As he says, tuning your car can help make it handle more realistically. This is very dumb.

The menu system sucks. He's right.

I agree with him when he says the course selection is awesome.

I also agree with him about the AI and rear-view mirror sucking.

If only I would have read this review before buying GT4...I could've saved myself the $50 and waited until it became cheaper.

Meh, he's just another smacktard looking to make a mark on the net.

I posted a couple of tidbits myself.

While I don't agree with most of what he said, and I like GT4, it doesn't bother me what peterb thinks about this game, what really bothers me is the attitude shown by some of the members of this forum on his review site. :grumpy:
Do you really think that posting profanity and libel about the author is likely to make him rethink his position?
No. What you've done is make yourselves look foolish and give a very bad impression of what people are like on GTPlanet. :(

the Interceptor made some good points in his rebuttal, and he did it politely without cause to offend. 👍

However, the posts that followed and degraded into name-calling and general foul-mouthed rubbish show that some of you are thicker-than-two-short-planks-placed-end-to-end, and probably have more legs than braincells. :P
(Yeah, so I'm a hypocrite! ;))
