Well the other day at work i sold 2 brand new xbox's to 2 totally seprate customers.

Both returned their originals faulty, and both returned their replacements faulty, one got a total refund the other got a ps3. Thats 4 total brand new xbox's (this shipment was only a few months old) returned in under 48hrs. Having been selling both Xbox's and PS3's for 10months i can honestly say, not only have i sold a zillion more PS3's but ive only seen 1 return, yet ive had COUNTLESS returns and phone calls from customers with failed xbox's.

I thought i would put up a poll and see what its like compared to my area.

I've had my 360 over a year and nothing has happened to it. It's never froze, overheated, or given me red lights.

I seriously question what people are doing to their systems that they keep breaking.

My guess is that they use them... a lot.

Most members I've read about having had problems with them are because they're using them on 4-6 hour stints... which shouldn't be a problem, but it seems to be for the X360.

Only problem I have had is a sticky CD tray but no red lights. I've had the 360 for about 18 months and play around 15 hours a week.

I've always wondered how people can sit in front of a gaming system that long, but I guess different strokes, eh? When I'm playing my 360 my eyes get tired after about an hour so I stop playing and go do something more constructive. The only time my 360 gets used longer then an hour is when I'm watching a DVD, but I'd rather do that on the PS2 since it doesn't have those annoying XBL pop ups.

My PS3 has stayed on for 4 - 5 days straight doing folding home and back in the day i had my PS2 turned on for 3 weeks straight playing GT3 because i didnt have a memory card to save it. being able to stay on for more than 6hours should be mandatory for a console. Their is always someone whos PS3's breaks and always someone whos xbox breaks, however from what i can see as a retailer its not who's xbox is gonna break, its who's xbox will last. Every time i sell one i hope i dont see them back. Its honeslty that bad.

I am no my 3rd. We just sent Heathers 1st one in so when that returns she will be on her 2nd 360. In 1 year. :scared:
Most unreliable console ever made with but it has the best games so we just deal with it.

Thats why you log out before watching a movie on the 360. lol To me the surround sound is much better through the 360.

You hardly play it. Of course it hasnt given you any problems yet.

Hw about the endurance races on GT4? You'd have it on for at least eight hours.

I never did those...I can't sit in front of a gaming system that long, I honestly do not know how anyone can.

I've had no problem with my 360 and I've had it for 18 months. Been used quite a lot, often on for 8 hours a day (my bro uses it). Only trouble I've had are game crashes which vary from game to game.

It's a bit of a shame the quality varies from console to console. Luckily, I've only had ones that work perfectly fine only to suddenly out of the blue give me random freezes then the red lights. The people who have never had issues are the lucky ones...

I'm on the 4th 360 now. The first two I even had a fan blowing on it and the power brick every time I played, but it never made a difference as they both broke. The last one was mounted flat instead of upright and it still broke. All were well ventilated, were cleaned every few weeks and are never moved/touched unless I'm putting a disc in. So it's DEFINETELY not user-related.

But yes - it is used rather a lot. On a good day about 8 hours at a time (and when Bioshock comes any day that'll be happening again), but my PS3 has been running F@H 24/7 since March without a hitch.

Thats the same thing we do. We have a fan blowing on our 360s and cover them with a towel every night. Also my house is always 70 degress in the winter or in the summer. Yet they still failed. HOwever this 3rd one was directly from Microsoft and is definetly the best one so far. I have high hopes for this 3rd one. My first 2 were from Circuit City and they were junk. They also always made a strange noise every time they were turned on. This new 3rd 360 is very quite and doesnt make that start up noise that the other ones did. I guess we will see how it goes. Hopefully Microsoft sends Heather a new one too.

My box didn't fail completely but it kept freezing up/locking from day one. First week consistetly after 1-2 hours uptime, then within 15-30 minutes the week after. I never got any red lights, but it was bad enough to take the fun out of it (the store is replacing it). If some of you mean that running a console for more than 30 minutes at a time is overkill, you're certainly in the wrong forum. The whole point with a console is that it's supposed to be bulletproof and handle the software that's released for it flawlessly in an average living room setting. A lot of 360 consoles just doesn't do that...

Add the fact that a number of consoles fail straight out of the box ought to wake you up if you think that it's 100% user's faults. MS actually apologising and extending the warranty should be the nail in the coffin for that theory. The problem doesn't seem to be with all batches, some are certainly better built than others... so just because you don't have that problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I'm a grown-up, I know how to treat my belongings, and I've never even had a Windows crash since '95... yet my Xbox failed. My fault? I don't think so.

The problem that simulates my problems the best is warping of the circuit board due to excessive heat buildup, compromising the solders and the circuits themselves. It's pretty much a known fact that the older boxes develop a lot of heat because of design flaws (cooling and CPU/GPU placement). The circuit board (probably only on some batches) is only fastened to the chassis along the edges, not in the middle, causing the board to warp when hot. This warping can crack or compromise the solders and circuits causing the box to crash when cold later.

My guess is that newer games (Forza 2 in my case) push the box a little harder, causing it to heat up to the point where the problems surface. The current redesigns (new processors, cooling and hopefully proper fastening of the circuit boards) should hopefully fix these issues...

Bought my Xbox 360 last December. Had no problems so far. But maybe I'm lucky. I've had my PS2 over 5 years now and haven't had to replace it. I've done multiple repairs on my own PS2 and also done a few repairs on friends PS2s. But I've got 5 years out of my PS2 so far, and I think that's awesome.

KM.

Well, in an average, day or, week...I'd say, in a day, about 1-3 hours, and in a, a week, o i dunno, maybe 10 hours max, because you know, i have. Other High Def goodies to play, with, like my Sky HD Box. And; my kitten.

Oh, right. How long do I play on average? I'd say anywhere between 7 and 10 hours a week.

How about "none of the above"? Mine has been glitchy since day one, and noisy as all hell, and I've finally convinced myself to return it and get a new one. But it's never actually died on me.

I still don't see how leaving it on reduces the life of it, when I first got it I played it a lot...probably 20 hours a week and still never had any issues with it.

You got lucky and got a good one, I guess... With all the repeated returns we hear about and all, I don't think the alleged 33% failure rate is necessarily wrong... but that's still less than half, most consoles actually do work. By the way, do you play any of the "troublemaking" titles, as in Forza/Rainbow6 etc? It seems that the "bad" boxes just can't handle certain titles. Mine worked perfectly fine for demos and stuff, but always crashed when playing Forza 2.

Maybe it's boxes produced at a certain factory or with certain component batches that seem to fail, I don't know.... There seems to be a whole variety of stuff going wrong: GPU/VRAM, NIC, DVDD, HDD, PSU, solders and circuits all seem to have potential.

If you haven't already bought one since making that thread, it's obviously not that important to you... I'd wait until you'd be sure to get a box with 65nm chips. If you buy now there's a pretty good chance you'll have to live without it for a couple months anyway.

Mine is a November 2005 build model, and overall I've had very few issues with it. I keep it in a very well-ventilated area, never really run it for longer than maybe three or four hours at a time, and keep an eye (and ear) on it if anything funny starts happening.

Have things happened? In short, yes.

It has scratched my Gears of War disc to the point where it won't play it, it loves to freeze-up on Forza2 and did so on Crackdown as well. As of late, the disc tray is refusing to open more often than ever before, really strange frame-rate issues happen in Forza, and it has been really picky over playing DVDs.

I went to Best Buy the other day (where I bought it and have it under warranty) and they said the DVD issue alone makes me eligible to return it for a $400 credit towards a new one. They said I get to keep the HDD, I assume the controller and headset as well, and I get a new system. However, this faces me with a larger dilema. Do I:

A) Keep running it as-is, waiting for the Halo 3 edition 360?
B) Trade it in and pay the extra $40 for the Elite?
C) Wait a bit longer for the updated chips, HDMI, and two free games?

Thus far, I'm leaning towards the Elite switch. For $40, I'm getting more than my money's worth, and I can tell my brother to buy a Core system, and give him the old HDD.
