Hey Hami, I am involved in the SJR for the SCCA and race a club ford. Whats the turn out for formula fords in your area?

Hey R1600, are we doing that copy and paste form system again in this thread?
Not good. I first started going to a Metro Detroit area track back in 1991 and the quantity of open wheel entries has steadily declined over the past 22 years. Check out the weekend results on the track's website for exact numbers. FF is thrown in Group #4 along with any FC, CFC, FS, FSCCA, F1000, CSR & DSR entries that show up.

Car counts at Waterford Hills Raceway have declined quite a bit in the past five years. As the auto industry goes, so goes Detroit. I like bigger car counts and more than a one lane race track so I have been traveling. Spec Miata is the biggest class around here followed closely by Spec Racer Ford. At Mid Ohio Sports Car Course we will see 30 to 40 Miata and 30 to 40 Spec Racer Fords. Formula Ford is nearly dead - only a handful. D Sports Racer is showing some life. There is an airplane engineer, John Staudacher, who also has designed his own DSR. He builds a new one each year, re-sets all of the track records around here, then sells it. Build another, rinse and repeat. I would really like to race that class if I could afford it.

The guys who do race formula cars are a really close, friendly group. They race each other with respect. As for Spec Miata, I expect at least one wheel mark each weekend. At one event I taped the protest form to both rear quarter panels with the codes for unnecessary contact already listed. I told the crazy ones in SM that all they needed to do was add their paint color to the form and follow me to the steward's tower after the race. Most laughed at that. One didn't because he was on probation for hitting me at the previous event. I am a pretty nice guy until the helmet goes on... then I get pretty competitive. I won't be pushed around. I'll hang tough, race hard and give room when it is earned.

Man that sounds like a ridiculous amount of fun. Maybe I should start saving for a miata instead of a kart.

I spent more each year racing remote controlled cars. Well, that's if you can avoid body damage. Between tires, gas and brakes, my RC car budget was about the same. The initial investment for the car, trailer, racing gear, fuel jugs, jack, jackstands, tools, etc. is the expensive part. A cheap Spec Miata can be found for around $8,000 USD. A solid regional car for $12,000 to $15,000. The top national cars are selling for $40,000 to $45,000. Each year the top ten at the Run Offs Championships pretty much all sell right there. People show up with cash and a trailer. The top ten just build a new one for the next season.

Hmm. Dilemma, the 91 is more lively and entertaining since it can go to 50/50 balance. I can probably sqeeze more one lap pace from it too. But it's more likely to murder me.
The 93 is nose heavy, requires more steering input, and feels like it never wants to turn in without a fight. But I'm consistently quick with it.
Tough call...

Same over here with the formula guys. Spec Racer Ford and Miata are also the biggest groups. There are often 1 or 2 crashes every weekend with those groups.

Hey guys got another practice room open. Still could use some help with tuning if anyone wants to join me. I used Hami's tune that he posted for a different miata and it was an improvement but I'm still well behind the front runners. I'm a driver not a mechanic!:P Room# 1472-6399-8494-1420-8874

Just an FYI but I have been able to run competitive times with only lowering the ride height to 95/95 f/r on the '89s, '95, and '97. Tuning has helped a little but it hasn't afforded seconds a lap.

By competitive times I mean: 1:18s at Silverstone International; :54s at Brands Hatch Indy; 1:43s at Laguna Seca; and 1:47s at Nurburgring GP/D.

My tunes will all be as follows:

Stock settings on everything but:

Drop ride height until bumps start unsettling the car (about 90/90).

Rear toe to 0 if I'm getting too much understeer.

I may run something crazy at silverstone, I'll post it if I do.

Same over here with the formula guys. Spec Racer Ford and Miata are also the biggest groups. There are often 1 or 2 crashes every weekend with those groups.

For a few years they mixed SRF and SM in the same run group until someone got hurt and we all rebelled. Even split grids didn't help.

I guess I'm just slow. The tuning tips I've gotten have helped but I still can't break 1:19, though I am much more consistently under 19.5. I don't feel like I'm making any mistakes and I think I'm cutting the corners as much as legally possible. I'm gonna keep practicing in hopes that I see some improvement but I'll just be shooting for a top ten tomorrow as usual.

You need to get in a room with one of us and use the watch feature to jump on board and see what line we are taking and how much speed we are carrying through the corners. These cars are all about momentum so 2 miles per hour slow in one corner is going to cost you a few tenths or more down the straight.

Good point.

@BrosifDuder I'll answer your PM tonight after I have a chance to look at it.

Anyone else that can switch to the late time slot? We need to fill some holes there.

Yeah, I can... I'm a married loser and it's winter... nothing planed for Saturday nights. ;)
I'll re-register. Eddie needs some company.

Hey Hami, when I said I raced I meant I was involved in the SCCA with volunteer work and helping my dad by being a crew member. Although I am 12, I use programs like PURE to help me train for real life. Karting is an option, but it is too expensive. My dad is well known at various tracks like New Jersey Motorsports Park, Summit Point, Watkins Glen, and Lime Rock. Racing in the preseason race was a pleasure. I like everyone's race style and hope to see it again Saturday night.

You have better writing skills than most adults I know.

Anyone break into the 1:16s at Silverstone yet?

Nope, unless someone was keeping quiet. Wouldn't be shocked if we saw a few. A few aliens haven't posted any times. What is the current best time 17.4 I think?

I can't even get close to a sub 17.5 :(

;)

I just found a half a second and I'm not sharing.

But that also means that the aliens will be running bottom 16s.
