here is a quiz ANFD sent me a while back.

what is this? specifically...

It looks similar to Honda's ovalised piston concept they did a long time ago.
They were trying to develop a four cycle combustion process motor that could compete with the two strokes in FIM 500cc GP. They actually built the bike and it was very expensive. The picture looks a little different than what I'm referring to though. If I guessed correctly.

@micantony It's from a Honda racing motorcycle, that's all I know.

I know nothing about engines or cars unfortunately. So I have to ask, from the picture, how do you know it is from a Honda racing motorcycle? Are you simply familiar with it or does some other uniqueness of the part give you that clue?

just trying to learn here. ANFD can supply an answers if he wants. I will post his reply to me after a while...:P

I've learned much from ANFD (including how flexible some women are... inside joke)

yeah, i cheated to give ANFD an answer too
i knew as much as that it was part of an engine piston, but that was about it!

Ooooh... Since it's available, I'm going to switch my color set to Black car with Black wheels. I'll of course switch back to my previous White car with Blue wheels if he returns.

Just a heads up guys .... I will not make Saturday's race nor the one after as I will be in the tropical sunshine of the Florida Keys .... fleeing the 20 degree temps next week here in Georgia. As to the subject of my age, consider this neat shot of me coming off of turn 2 at Suzuka Circuit 34 years ago and I was 32 at the time

And I thought I was one of the oldest turtles at 45yrs..

Have fun in the keys. If you go to key west visit Duval street. Make some mental markers so you remember which end is which. The bars open at 7 am and don't close till 4am..
There's another key with the small deer on it maybe you'll have time to visit. Their always funny to look at. Have fun!!

Crank and pistons for a Honda NR, a 750cc limited production street bike.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_NR

500cc GP bikes were limited to 4 cylinders. Honda, being Honda, preferred to use 4 stroke engines rather than the superior 2 stroke engine. At the time, 2 strokes dominated. A 4 cylinder 4 stroke 500 could not compete. The oval pistons tricked the engine into thinking it had twice as many cylinders, a v8. The NR500 never won, too complicated, too heavy. It did rev to about 24,000 rpm. Oh, Fast Freddie Spencer raced it.

From what I understand, Turtles live a very long time

Based on some of the things you said about your background tz, relative to motorcycle racing and AMA Pro racing I have a ton of pictures I could tease you with :sly: You may not remember but the history of AMA racing goes back quite a ways. I was Freddie Spencer's suspension engineer in his very first years with Honda when that picture was taken

Talked to Freddie a few years ago, got some advice for racing 125s. Roadraced from 1991 thru 2008, including AMA Pro. Got some good pictures of Wes Cooley.

I am definitely a Yamaha guy, although my current street bike is a BMW. Honda is the evil empire.

I run a roadracing charity. Talk to John Ulrich a few times a year.

You are up there, but I turned 50 last year.

Mbobb, Psycho, and shred are all older than I am. Not sure how old micantony is, pretty sure he is no spring chicken.

I've been to the Keys dozens of times and know Duval St very well. Also know Big Pine Key well where the Key Deer live. At about the 6 minute mark or so there's a male and a female Key Deer .....
We're taking our teardrop camper down this time instead of our boat, but we will have our kayak with us (film at 11)

I have now finally platinum'd GT6, and now have enough to buy the last 2 cars for flex friday, so looks like I will make it now.
Sweet and congrats. Should be fun. 👍

Just a friendly reminder to anyone here that tomorrow night we go Super GT racing in the FLEX Series.

I didn't realize I was racing with real racers. I'm envious, I've never had the chance to race on a real track. Use to say that the world was my racetrack.:P Fortunately I never got busted or hurt anyone before I matured enough to see the danger I was putting other people in.

The speed difference between fast street drivers and racers on a race track is amazing.

Did a track day at Jennings GP (Jennings FL). First time on a 125GP bike (125cc). Was in a group with 6 kids on 1000cc street bikes, but little track time. After learning the bike and the track, I was lapping the group a couple times every 15 minutes or so.

I wish the game were as easy for me as the real thing. Don't think I will ever be very fast. I am missing too much of the feedback that I relied on. The game has no real feeling of speed for me. Corner entries feel way too slow and I still run off the track. Not sure I will ever get it figured out.

Save your money, do something like a Skip Barber school. You will not regret it.

Racing is fun, but very expensive. My favorite race bike (TZ250) cost more than $6 PER MILE to ride. That does not include crash damage or travel, food lodging. I rode between 200 and 400 miles a race weekend. Old joke on the WERA board was that crack addiction would be cheaper than racing.

Racing, the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

If you see John Ulrich again, tell him that Neil "Mr. Mulholland" says Hi

Picture I took of John in 1980 at the Suzuka 8 Hour

Figured if you knew motorcycles and raced at Willow, you would know John. Should see him in June at Road America.

Racing virtually is quite far removed from actual racing when it comes to sensory feedback. You have to completely re-train your brain to process the visual and auditory stimuli to initiate the correct muscle responses. I've had occasion to have two professional race car drivers at my house try my set up. Both these guys were older (one was a former IMSA champion) and came through their careers before simulators became common. Neither could do it well and as a result of their naturally large egos, both deemed it stupid after less than 5 minutes and refused to embarrass themselves further

Of all the people I've met racing online, no one is more competitive by nature than the motorcycle racers :)

It's funny how things change when it's reversed. I'm part of the playstation generation. I began playing GT1 in the 4th grade. It quite literally taught me how to drive long before I could even get a license. I haven't had the chance to use those skills on a real race track, but I have done some karting and plenty of mountain driving and it's obvious that what I learned from the game translated to real life. Little things like being smooth with your inputs and taking an efficient line through a corner are quite realistic in the game, imo. It certainly can't prepare you for the first time you go around a corner at or near the limit, though. My father on the other hand is one of the best drivers I've ever met, and is completely useless when it comes to driving on Gran Turismo.:P

I am with quade on this one, I have been playing racing games since GT1 also, it's a way of driving on tracks I may never see. I was able to read the track, find the best line, how to roll the car into the corner to meet the apex. I learned early on that it's slow in fast out, late breaking will kill your line and speed out of the turn. I have driven real cars, on real tracks, and I think the things I learned in gaming is a huge help when the virtual meets the reality.
