Recently got some new windows and blinds the past two days and decided to experiment with the new lighting I've gotten with them:
Thoughts?
Pretty much the same with me, I went to Target and K-Mart today looking for 2012's (I picked up a blue Falcon race car and a white 458, at K-mart a few weeks ago) and they both had absolutely nothing there, so I just ended up buying a few I've been missing.
There is a definate parking garage look to your pics, and the first two work really well - the cars at the front getting just enough natural light while those at the back are lurking out of focus in the shadows.?
The third picture also works reasonably well with the rows of cars and outline of the desk (garage), but the lack of focus ruins the effect somewhat.
The last two however are just too dark making it very difficult to even identify what each of the cars are. They could work with more light but I suspect that would be tricky to achieve without moving furniture around?
RACECAR, if you are serious about producing better images, I would get into the habit of having a lightsource on hand; a desklamp, flash light, whatever you can use that can be moved around easily.
A trick you can employ on the last photo is to have a light source directed into the tight space you have, and have something reflective like aluminum foil or a glossy white card (bristol board or something) and placed that on the opposite side so that the light can bounce off that and light up the front of the cars. It won't light up the place as much as it sounds and it'll keep the atmosphere dark still.
First batch of photos from the "Toy Attic". I decided to start with the off-brands as I don't have too many of them.
Well what do you want?
Seriously though, I would like to utilize some better quality lighting.
Hey Spacegoat and Stiggy what part of Australia are you guys in? Ive found plenty of 2012 cars usually in discount stores like Crazy Clarks, Sams Warehouse and the Reject shop also found plenty of them in Toys R Us and Big W
I just saw this. 👍 I don't think I'll go as far as filtering the light, but I'm thinking about providing second source of light. Very educational!
I read what it said and it makes total sense, I'm just not motivated enough to go through the trouble.Filtering is if you want to soften the hardness of the light source. You don't need to if that's not what you're trying to go for.
I don't know much about cameras, but I don't think it's lighting, zooming, etc. I think it may be the lens? When I used to take pictures with cell phones, they used to look like that. I notice the graininess.
RACECAR's camera isn't entirely unusable; he's got bad lighting and he's either zooming too close, his shutter speed is too low or he's got shaky hands and should be using a tripod.
I wish I still kept mine sometimes. I used to have some 5-600 Hot Wheels cars in a box but I sold them all at a recent garage sale.
This, however, is the other collection:
About 75% of these are Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, and all of them except the Hot Wheels models in the bottom right are Volkswagens. Dad's a big Vee-Dub nut
Now for a closer look without all of the packaging. Click on the thumbnails for fullsize.
First up, A 1961 Ferrari 156 F1 in 1:35
Next is a 1961 Ferrari 400 Superamerica in 1:36
Now for a Lotus Esprit in 1:38
And then an Aston Martin Virage in 1:40
I tried getting some pictures of the 1:43 Toyota 7 in its box (it has never been opened) but couldn't do it justice, and then my batteries died. More soon hopefully.

Absolutely stunning collection. Does your Dad still collect? Has he handed this over to you yet? That is a really valuable collection; focused on one marque.
Here’s something you HW Gurus might know about - more info?
M:: Your error is cool if that car came with both wheel sets. If not, even better but more strange.
That's one hell of a cool error. You want of my errors? I give you good price
