Maybe Tarmac was doing a cash grab on upselling event-exclusivity with low-cost manufacturing.

This.

Not even close!

Yes nothing comes close. The only things I have been able to get was that culture boxset and the two recent O16. The boxset I guess I got lucky. The O16’s will never sell out, ever.

All the others, the website just died on me. Pathetic. I did already have the pink 510 and the 240z, but I paid with an arm for those from my grocery store.

I don’t think I will be renewing my membership next year.

More expensive than the TLV and no way near as good. Booyoo.

I also started taking photos of that Lambo freebie they gave out at the event. The car is so bad I stopped after shooting a few angles and saved my time instead. No wonder it was a freebie.

Wow that headlight doesn't look that accurate.

As an ex EK9 owner I can say that the TLV version is by far the best replica. For a start they managed to get the shape of the headlights right on the pre and post facelift versions (The pre's should be smaller and more rounded, the post's are slightly wider and the indicators are more squared off). Most diecast makers (in all scales it seems) seem to work from the same poor mould for the EK. They often use the pre-facelift's lights (and smaller grill) with the post-facelift's bumper.

When I got my EK9 the only diecast I could find at the time was a 1/43 by Hi-Story and it was a poor rendition but as I like to have models of the car's I own it went with it. Ebbro's version wasn't bad but still had errors so I passed. Finally a few years later I bought Mark43 's version which like the TLV is near perfect.

Not my pics but Hi-Story in Silver and Mark43 in white. Note the shape/size of lights and grill, the poor shape of the pillars and roofline and shape and position of the spoiler (even the recaros are some generic sports seat).

Tarmac's EK looks like a cross between the Hi-Story model above and the Fujimi 1/24 which again has the pre-facelift's smaller lights and grill on the post-facelift's bumper:

I'm yet to buy any of Tarmac's offerings as I haven't seen a casting I like. The GT-R GT3's should be right up my street, but the shape is awful and the wong spoiler and reverse-raked stance look totally wrong. When I learnt of the Greenlight x Tarmac Falken R34 I was exicted until I saw the poor colours and pygmy side mirrors.

More CM's. Surprising I know.

Ford Focus | 2005 Monte Carlo

Ford Escort Cosworth | 1997 Acropolis

Ford RS 200 | 1986 Swedish rally

Ford Focus | 1999 Monte Carlo

Along with the Sierra Cosworth I got from AOS ages back this means I'm missing only two more from SS.16. The 2005 Monte Carlo focus is the secret car from this series so I'm glad to have that one.

Thanks for the detailed comparisons! When I was comparing the two I was wondering if there are different facelift EK9s as the two models are noticeably different.

I trusted TLV to be accurate so I assumed the Tarmac to be off. Your explainantions are spot on.

I have found Tarmacs to be not too accurate. I get to see all their releases in person and find most to be not up to expectations. I only collect the BMW M3 but that’s not all that accurate either.

From what I can remember the EK9 had the following visual differences betwen pre and post facelift:

Different head lights (post's lights are wider and more angular)
Different grill (post's is wider with plastic mesh v.s the pre's metal mesh)
Different front bumper
Clear rear indicators (turn signals)
Different centre console (pre had a single-DIN stereo, with sliding heater controls, post had a double-DIN space for stereo/nav and rotary heater controls)

TLV have managed to capture all bar the dashboard (they appear to have used the nav dash on both versions though its that small you hardly notice).

Wait- That Focus you have in the post is the Secret?

Oh I forgot that existed even though I'm sure you've linked it to me before. Awesome.
Sadly doesn't list the secret cars, but I really love seeing all the cars I'm still missing that will tempt me to part with my money far into the future.
Like obviously all those anime cars.

There was another site that had even more info, but that geocities page died a while back sadly.

This.

I'm sorry to hear that. As you know, it's always been glitchy, but it got worse this year. Total deadend at times. I'd tell you how frustrating I found it, but as you know, it drove me out of the hobby, so there.

P.S. What is O16!?

I love it!(the cars lol)
I'm pulling an old reference I saved.
I think that's the one you (and I) got:

So, it's part of a actual series called "Extra", and not a secret car?

I'd say there is a series called "Rally Japan", but the 1999 Monte Carlo is part of the SS.16 batch.

Secret cars were like Secret cars for Kyoshos; unlisted in the charts and a blind box grab.

Wow you have a very good eye for detail. I don’t look inside of the cars and I certainly wouldn’t be able to distinguish features inside.

P.S. What is O16!?

I’m shocked you don’t know this. Original 16.

EDIT: The store owner asked me not to disclose the name of the store.
Is that white Testarossa even out yet? Amiami page says August release.
Cry even more as they cost 33 USD each, including the white LaFerrari Tomica Event model.

Better wait for them to be officially distributed...
Yeah, $33 is steep for Tomica Premium. I'd be on the fence for about $20 for the white one. Yellow, I don't have chance in hell!

Ah, okay. I'm going to run now, before @Cano finds this exchange & slaps me for ignorance.

Precisely why the owner asked me to keep mum on his store name and location. He's fine with posting them in social media, just not disclose where they can buy them. All colors of the Testarossa should be out on the same day.
So this stuff leak out, like with the Hot Wheels? Just curious.

Yeah, what this man said:

It can all get a little confusing. Especially when some cars look so similar. There's a 2005 Focus in the Rally Japan collection that looks almost exactly the same as that Monte Carlo one I just got.
They were pretty good at not releasing the exact same car more than once though. It happened, but not much at all bar the generic "rally car collection" box set.

Reckon they're worth the money? Price is fairly steep.

They are the same price as Tarmacs. The quality is as good if not better. Definately not worse. I wasn’t expecting much from these but I am impressed so far.

Of course they can’t compare with the CMs you’ve been buying, but that’s an era gone by now.

I have a few CMs and if I was to compare the two, the Inno’s are not worth the money compared to CMs.

I wish there were more options on the market for mid-range stuff. Since Minichamps and Kyosho have more or less abandoned the scale there aren't too many options if you're not willing to shell out some serious cash outside of american cars or some off scale brands like Norev or Tomica Premium.

I feel like more competition in that form could maybe lower prices for the more expensive stuff too, or at least keep them in check.
