Why is that so? Mistake no. 1 is to say that. If you never taste good food, you'll never understand how awful bad food really is (ok, very extreme example, but should get the point).

console racers are built for mostly mainstream, pc sims are built for smaller diehard fanbase so I doubt console racers will ever reach the simulation of a pc racer.

i own rfactor & NASCAR 2003, two of the most realistic pc sims ever created, but i still prefer GranTurismo because it is so much easier to just "jump" into and overalll is funner with car collecting, numerous events etc .

if u want diehard realism buy a pc sim. if you want all the fun GT offers, buy GT

This demo is not perfect but shows off great improvements to the GT franchise

This is all good fun :)

A few key points that I've noticed so far:

Drafting is a lot less than in GT4. This is a good thing for Online Racing because it means those of us who lose time to the faster guys on the track cannot make up for lost time by drafting and overtaking them on the straight. 👍

The painful understeer that we had in GT4 seems to have gone. 👍

The brakes appear to grab/bite a lot more than before. Still not sure if this is a good or bad thing at the moment.

The most important thing however is that I'm having lots of fun :)
 
I have to say, I'm impressed.

The AI isn't great, but it has improved, they do recognise your there now and most bumps were my fault, not the AI's. The physics, well the basics feel familiar but the control you have over your tyre's grip levels is so much better, as is the power delivery. The tyre's don't seem to go from full grip to zero grip in factions of input anymore, theres a decent transition there.

The in car view is great, I haven't played it with my DFP yet because of the time, but it does look good for GT5. I'm enjoying the driving far more than I enjoy driving in GT4.
 
- just watched one of the Mercedes try and make a 3-wide pass on the backstretch only to pull out at the last second when he knew it wouldn't work going into the turn! daytona should be wild!

- the AI brakes frequently to avoid playing bumper cars with other AI.

- the AI is aggressive and smart, it pulls out of dangerous situations and doesnt force it but it will try the pass

- The AI can be fun to watch, unpredictable unlike GT4

- The Audi R8 sounds about 75% as good as the trailer
 
Graphics: very pretty (but have noticed a strange clipping/jitter at times??? has anyone else noticed? Even in the car screens!!!

Screen tearing - it's worse for me in 1080P. Knock it down to 720 and see if that provides a fix.
 
What makes this demo and the game look so good is the lighting. Perhaps a little too much bloom but generally it's excellent, the best I've seen in any racing game (PGR4 is pretty good too mind).
The sound has improved but it still needs work. The exhaust and engine sound should be seperate rather than blended in and with a bit more bite to it. The F430 does sound right, essentially, but could do with some more guts.
Cars look amazing. No complaints at all. Cockpit view is good (I hope you can change the position in the full game). The internal shadows need some work.
The circuit does have flat trees still, but I'm assuming the game proper will correct that.
There is a little frame rate drop, mainly on the final chicane but generally no problem and no tearing (in 720p).
Feels good too. Very smooth and very responsive. Not sure I like the dipping when braking. I guess it mimics your head moving but as you'd be wearing a HANS Device for racing that would'nt happen to that degree. Still, it's a minor complaint.
Looking forward to the other cars being unlocked (the one under the blue cover is the WRX Subaru).
 
Well, I was playing, and then selected the gtr to race with, and it went to the loading screen and just stayed there. Im not sure why, i quit the game, and my ps3 turned completely off, and then came back on and everything was fine. I dont know why it did it. Other than that hiccup, im impressed.
 
To be honest, I have no glue about the sounds in the game. But today I was revving(spelling?) my car again and it almost breaks my heart when I'm redlining that thing. They just got to have those sounds right this time. I love FE the Motul-Civic-thing and the GSX-R in GT4 just for the sounds of them. 7krpm has to sound like 7krpm whatever the car is.

I have played every PC sim out their, believe me, everyone has it's faults.

Race 07 is lauded by some, slated by other's, same with GTR2, LFS, rFactor etc.

I just don't get why some feel the need to put downer on things becuase a particular game/sim doesn't match their, often misguided, expectations.


Just move on.
 
I took a break from playing to replay to some threads, and while doing so let the "intro/screensacer" video play.

I have to say, I like it much better than the previous intros. It seems to randomly select from about twenty or more 1-3 minute video clips featuring the cars in the demo in different environments:
  • Studio Photoshoot
  • Outside on a narrow cobblestone street
  • Outside at the sight of a castle ruin
  • In the "Team Racing" Garage
And then they also have random video clips from full field races on both Suzuka and Daytona.

I also really like the different music used in the various intro/screen saver videos. 👍

like others i tried the "sit in the middle of track and see if the AI hits you" test

on straight - First 6 cars made no attempt to move and hit me. i got back on track at a slight ANGLE this time. with that adjustment the last 9 cars SWERVED out of my way and avoided me at the LAST second

in turns - Thet hit me no matter what in the turns

I say with a few more tweaks GT5's AI can handle damage
 
some quick thoughts...

GRAPHICS - what can we say even at this demo level the visuals are stunning. The cockpit view is amazing and will be my standard view of choice, added a new level of depth to the game i can't get enough of! Some minor clipping issues and obviously more 3d rendering into the environments needs to be there (trees, texture on grass), but at 736MB this is unreal! Hopefully more can be done with a Blu-Ray disc! And yes the steering wheel radius in cockpit view is not 300 degrees, but it still looks exceptional and is the best GT view by far!

AI - MAJOR improvement from GT4. While it still can be better in terms of avoidance when you're doing something stupid (like spinning out or coming to a dead stop in the preferred racing line or coming back on the track wildly after going off) it seems to respect its surroundings much more. Seen lots of good signs compared to GT4, lots of passing, very little single file racing (only when it was advantageous to draft), no evidence of bumper cars, and AI making mistakes (running wide, spinning out, over braking, etc) and 95% of collisions were b/c of something i did.

PHYSICS - people who are complaining must not have the full sim settings on. Not only do you need to set Pro mode and turn all the Aids off in the race menu, but you also need your wheel (no dual shock action) and adjust the settings in the options menu too. Make sure you're running in "Professional" steering mode as well. WOW! Donuts, parking brake turns, power-sliding, all doable now. Take out the BMW and let loose, it's nuts! Yes i do think the tire grip needs some improvement, and while the cars seem to have a bit more "weight" to them it could be better, but it has stepped up tremendously from GT4 in the right direction IMHO. Gone is the incessant wheel spin off a standing start in an RWD car for starters.

SOUND - this has been my biggest disappointment so far. Only a minor upgrade from GT4. There is more directional sound and running in Surround Sound is the only way to fly, and to its credit at least all the cars actually SOUND DIFFERENT! WOOT! Having said that there's a lot of the flat engine noise and if you get really wild that incredibly annoying SCREEECH of the tires (although at lower thresholds, there are much more realistic noises and they act dynamically too = improved). I'm hoping that maybe lesser sound files were used to keep the demo file size lower (736MB isn't that much for what we're after)... so here's hoping the full GT5P will have much higher rendered sound files to give it more depth. You can see the potential as some of the cars are just there... so i'll stick to the positive signs and hope these things will get ironed out.

all for now, hope to get a bit more in depth after spending some more time with the game.

PS. If you haven't dl'd it yet... totally worth it, one of the best PS3 demos put out so far.
 
OK, before we take this physics thing over the top. This is a racing simulation game.. I dont have a PS3 or the demo.. so have any of you ever actually taken a real car to its limits on real racetrack? If you have, compare your experience with what you feel in GT and Forza..

I was a diehard GT fan until I did that.. GT1 - GT4 are nothing like the real thing, Forza is, GTR is. Someone with real experience PLEASE tell me that this game wont be as disappointing as some of you guys are making it sound like it will.

Lets not talk about people using the wrong settings or comparing console to PC, imo its a fair comparison, the end goal for all simulation games is to BE the real thing, Forza and GT are simulation games and they should be judged on the same level as GTR2, etc..

I have however just done the most basic of AI tests, parked the car on the racing line on the back straight and see what happens. Unfortunately it failed this one, got driven straight into.

I did the same test and in most cases they avoided me, a few cars reacted too late and clipped or collided.

That is just depressing, you'd think they would improve such simple primitive elements, but the smoke from the tires hasn't change since the 'revolution' of Gt3. And in essence, the engine sounds are like Gt2. And who really cares about A.I. when we'll have online, but that is just ridiculous.

What have they been working on this whole time, just the graphics and some physics which could have been faked well enough for Gt4?

They must be really pushing it and they're tenderizing people for some enormous revolution come Gt5 that they've been planning since Gt4, but this truly isn't asking alot. The sound should be atleast as good as GTR which came out years ago, even now, for THIS demo, not something to be hyped for a final version. It seems the only obvious next gen element is the graphics, as simplistic as this may sound to the set-apart crowd touting to be patient for the final version.. Every other quality seems to just be a different, wiser, stylistic choice that the people of PD made, which is what competing with other companies on the same console is all about, but it's still more or less on the same plane as other sims.

ps i play gt4 almost daily, and visit this forum many times every week and think Gt5 will rule no matter what in the end. I nag because I love.
 
After trying the game with headphones on, there really is a lot of depth going on in the engine sounds department! Although some of the cars don't sound exactly like their real counterparts like with the F430, they do at least sound like petrol engines. Sound has improved vastly from GT4.
 
While the graphics are next gen, I'm having a lot of problems with jaggies. I have 1080p HDTV set that's amazing. However, I get a lot of jaggies and image smears and it looks bad, when it happens.

Anybody else having this problem? I'm hoping it's not my HDTV set settings. I don't want to change them just for this game. Every other game looks fantastic.

Don't make a mistake, the game looks great. I just see a lot of jaggies and some image smearing, is all.

Flame? excuse me... there's a difference between critique and flaming. I think you're taking my comments the wrong way. But if you want to live in a dreamworld claming evrything in this game is perfect you're welcome to it, so long as you don't try to mislead people while doing so.

All i'm doing is telling it like it is, don't like it? that's fine. i don't like the flaws either, but at least i don't ignore them.

I think you're getting the impression that i'm some sort of GT hater, i don't think a person like that would have over 1000 laps in nurburgring in GT4, (i got around 500-600 in EPR too.)

I'm a huge fan of the series, that isn't afraid to tell it like it is, you can ignore the flaws all you want, but they are still there.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that you simply do not know better.
But if you do, then i seriously don't understand your anger towards my comments.

I'm being as objective as i can here, YES the physics ARE an improvement over GT4, they are just not nearly as good as they could be in this day an age, specially considering just how much they can do with the PS3, EPR physics are still considerably better.
I know you don't like that fact, i don't really either. But that's the way it is.
YES, the sounds suck, they still use the same flawed method for them, it's extremley obvious.
The AI is considerably better, but it's nonearly as good as it can be. (i don't know if there will be dificulty levels for it, but as it is in this demo, it's just too damn slow and makes a lot of mistakes.)

I'm very surprised people are angry at me towards my comments to the point of considering me a flamer that should be ignored.
But again, watever. if that's what i get for telling it like it is, so be it. Suit yourself.
 
what on earth happened with the tire/traction physics? it feels sooo GT4! GTHD's are way better...

and the sound... uhhhh... still GT4 to me... it has improved but not that much...

hope these gets fixed on the retail version of GT5P and real GT5.

What you are experiencing is tearing, which means the frames are overlaping, this is something you see when there's no Vsync.
Apparently in GT5 when frames are dropped vysinc goes off to avoid making it look worse than if it dropped a few frames.

i'm reading that this happens less in 720p (which points to it being mainly a fillrate issue with the RSX.)
I'm sure this will be diminished or eliminated by the time the full GT5 game ships.
But one can only wonder... if they can make it look that good at 1080p, just how good can they make a game look at 720p with shaders evrywhere.
 
I have a sony XBR3 40'' 1080p

It just does not look all that good. I enjoyed the look of GTHD

but I am starting to think people running in 720p tvs are not having the shimmering, terrible v-snyc issues, and frame slowdowns I have.
Another point is on all the videos from cameras and from downloads I see none of the issues I have now.
I can say one thing....this game is not 1920x1200(1080p) it is upscaled for sure(1440?) and it is not running at 60fps always.
I just do not think it is right for polyphony to say this is 1080p/60fps in every interview. (yes they said this about the demo also)
Why are 50 percent of people saying they have AA, v sync and shimmering problems and the other half saying it looks perfect?
Is there something in the settings to help anything?
 
One thing I have thought about is that due to its connection with the Tokyo Motor Show, this demo had a deadline. We all know PD are usually late on releaseing stuff. So the point is, I would not be surprised if PD cut some corners to get this demo out in time and things like the rearview mirrors, in-car hand motion, sound(possibly), and who knows what are not to the full potential PD are capable of or would like them to be at. They released an update for the gt:hd demo after it was released so they could in the future update this demo or possibly improve things in some way by the time the North American demo comes out.

I have no idea whats going on in the minds of the staff PD, but I just had this thought and I thought I would share this thought. Feel free to let me know if this makes sense or if i'm talking out my ...
 
Are you using the Professional physics mode?
Since most non-Japanese are rather poor when it comes to reading Japanese perhaps you could come up with a translation that guides you thru how to get Professional physics?
