Thought I would come back and explain the issue with the multi-length intake system. This is the set of vacuum lines and vacuum solenoids that controls the change from short to long intake runners. This picture was taken when I had the manifold off so i could change the leaky valve cover gaskets, but the system was working at that time.

As the years went by, those vacuum nipples on those solenoids started breaking off, creating both vacuum leaks and non-functional intake runner changes. Those solenoids are located on the rear of the manifold, and because of the way it folds over the rear valve cover, the manifold is only a couple of inches from the firewall, making the solenoids and hoses inaccessible. You can't reach them from the top, and with exhaust in the way, you can't reach them from underneath, either. I couldn't be bothered to obtain replacements, or to remove the manifold again to facilitate repair, so I simply plugged the vacuum line that fed the system.

This was the only "permanent" failure I had on the car, and this was at about 145,000 miles.
