Ford's underrated sports coupe. It competed with the toyota celica and honda/acura Integra! I wish I could see this rivalry in GT maybe in a 90's Sports car cup :)

below are a few examples of a 1993 -97 Probe gt and MX-6!
The MX-6 and Probe gt are built on the same platform (just restyled on the exterior) they also use the same engines! a 2.5 Liter 24V V6 Mazda KLDE motor and a Mazda FSDE 2.0 16V motor.

I had a 94 in that color and boy did I like that car. The only thing I hated about it was the flimsy door panels.
The engine was so rev happy and the exhaust sounded great too. I voted yes.

The FS-DE in those years sucked. The pre-electronic ignition ones had bum-all for power, and the cam position sensor was built into the distributor, so when that part went out (as it typically does on any car with a cam position sensor and constant exposure to heat), you needed an expensive new distributor instead of a cheap sensor.

Okay... that's a minor squiggle. It sucked because it made no power. :D

The V6 was kind of nice, though.

In the UK it did sort of replace the Capri though. And they really could have done with calling it Capri as well, if only because the Capri's "Crapi" nickname is mildly less distressing than "Probe".

The Probe was meant to replace the Mustang, failed miserably.
Was it? Never would've guessed it. The '94 is the best looking I think and I honestly think Ford should bring it back. Looking at it I've always thought it had appeal.

Don't forget that Chevrolet was toying with the idea of replacing the Camaro with this:

The L-Body was small, light, and could take a bunch of different powertrains. The "Feretta" had a 3.5L SOHC V8 with VVT, and would have continued being front wheel drive. Hell, they even did a 385 BHP twin-turbo V6 model with all-wheel-drive....

Both the Probe and the Beretta came around at a time where things were rapidly changing, and even though we poke fun at how bad they were, a lot of us forget about how good they actually were at the time. Reasonably quick, good handling, low prices.

Well, the Beretta was good if you filled out the extremely specific and vague option codes on the order sheets that got you a good one. Which was no small feat, since GM made 7 billion of the things over 10 years and only ever offered the nice ones for 3, bookending it with two ones that seemed similar but were garbage.

And heaven help you if you got a Corsica instead.

I liked the Beretta, never heard of it replacing the Camaro.

My cousin taught me how to drive manual in one. He had one of the rare 5 speed 3.1 V6 models.

This is true.

While I like the unfortunately named Probe, I would hate it as a Mustang replacement.
Which is why we have the SN95 Mustangs. Ford got way too much hate mail.

Came close to owning one a few times. The Probe is much better looking than the MX-6.

I'm surprised that this thread is still in the "Cars in General" section when it's topic is GT6.

That is why the Fox Body mustangs went on so long Mustang fan groups had a massive letter writing campaign to Ford to stop it.

As far as the OPs question I voted NO for the fact the Fox and Fox4/Sn95 Mustangs should be in GT6 before a Probe. The Probe is a fun car for sure and should be in GT at some point but there are more iconic Fords from the '80s and '90s.

^ Boosted Probe versus Dodge viper

It was meant to replace the mustang (yes) thats because ford and gm were planing on making their pony cars FWD. It was cheaper at the time.

Few people know that the 99-02 cougar was a probe, ford just decided to change route and revive the cougar nameplate for marketing purposes. I spoke with a designer that worked on the cougar project.
It is a fact that the car was in Gran Turismo 2 (about 2 years after Ford discontinued Production of the probe gt)

I find it very depressing when people put down the name probe because they are immature. Ford chose the name from a series of concept cars from the 80's (collaborations with Ghia at the time) (probe concepts)

I own a Probe, I've had it since I was 16 years old (2006) I Am now 23. It's a great car! fun to drive and such a nice car to look at!

I hope that one day it gets recognized for it's heritage. It is a part of Ford history! The joint venture between Ford and Mazda!
(FORD BODY. MAZDA HEART.) :)

My uncle used to have this car. He loved it. Used to drive like a madman all around the D. I didn't care much for it, especially as I got older. Not because of the original intent to replace the Mustang, as I didn't like the Fox body one bit.

Still an interesting car.

The Probe was a lot bigger than an Integra or a Celica... it was more of a competitor to the Prelude, which was faster (didn't matter if it was the non-VTEC or VTEC versions), better looking, more reliable, more fun to drive, held its value better, etc...

There's a reason why they're not very popular... they're not very good.

There was nothing wrong with the Probe. Except the name and the price.

Uhh... if you mean that the car that became the Cougar was originally intended to be called "Probe", I'll take your word for it - but the Cougar and the Probe shared nothing.

Which is very rare in the motor industry for two cars of the same type in the same segment where one is the replacement of the other, but they literally shared not a single component (except maybe switchgear - been a while since I was in either and Ford do like to recycle switchgear). The Probe was - as I'm sure you're already aware - a Mazda MX-6 underneath, using MX-6 engines (specifically the KL-DE V6 and FS-DE straight four) and gearbox (G5M manual; no idea about the auto). The Ford/Mercury Cougar was a reshelled Ford Mondeo V6 Mk2 (Contour in the US) with pretty much no other changes and a considerably worse car for it.

i need the probe in the game! (specificlly the 96 gt) cuz thats what i have!

I think the probe gt is a good, car, as it has ford looks with mazda soul, great combo.
yes it was supposed to be a mustang replacement, but they called it the probe, made it fwd, didnt give a v8 option, and made it a mazda. im not a big fan of mustangs, but they are supposed to v8 rwd muscle cars, the probe was much more of a tuner, so as a car, i think the probe is actually quite good. mine cost $1000, it has a leaky exhaust, poor radio, and body damage. those were a fault of the previous owner, not ford. it has almost automatic everything (except gearbox) and there are only a few small mechanical faults. its fun to drive, good to look at, and even though there are a few faults, they are small, and easy to fix and is fun to modify. its not the best car, but i dont see it as a failed, hopeless wreak, i see it as something i can improve, to make it an even better car. -if you read the wole thing, thank you-
