2004 Australian GP Result

Mate! Don't give away the result in the thread title - people are taping the race and will want to watch it without knowing the result. That said (and yes this is a straight copy from my gilesguthrie.com post):
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, that bordered on horrific. I know the cool conditions didn't suit Michelin, but gee whiz, that was a hiding of epic proportions.

McLaren are in hideous trouble - they look to be behind BAR and Webber's Jaguar. Williams once again managed to trip over themselves, and if Alonso is as on it all season as he was today Montoya and Ralf might be battling to keep up with him.

Toyota look dreadful - I mean, they were awful - my outrageously early tip - Panis won't last the season, he'll either retire or get booted. Jordan and Minardi look like they won't score points. I have no idea of what to make of Sauber's performance, although I enjoyed Massa's 'spin and continue'.

You're watching Speed Channel too, huh? I missed most of the race. The boys wanted to watch a movie with me, but I popped in from time to time. How was it?

I guess I should have quoted dl_ca, I was refering to his SoCal location, but your post wasn't up when I made mine. Sorry for the confusion.

Oh, thanks for the list. I wanted to know if the second Renault car finished in a position for some points, and they did. I want Renault to win this year, but it looks like Ferrari is gonna play hardball, again.

No problems. I got the impression Ferrari could have gone further on with it and just about lapped the field, except maybe for Alonso.

Trulli had a pretty solid race. Renault will put up a pretty solid result in the constructors - they've definitely taken a step forward from last year.

Did you hear what Alonso said after the race about is run-in with Montoya? He was right, BTW. I hate Montoya, and don't worry, I don't want to see him die!

Looked like a pretty standard first corner incident - I imagine Montoya was pretty hot under the collar after screwing the start.

They're just interviewing Mick Doohan (pit lane reporter for the local broadcaster) and he made some quite valid points about Montoya's consistency and his being prone to silly mistakes. He threw away three points today - and you need only look at last season's totals to realise how important three points are.

Ferrari didn't work hard enough all winter and bridgestone can't compete anymore....blah. Granted Au favors both but god damn my beloved Scuderia really put a stamp on the weekend. Congrats to the guys in red!!!

Kimi will be in red overalls next season, his 04 title hope is over....McLaren should break the MPd17 out again....

I guess the Honda Pace was real...I was cheering for Jenson all day, 6th is good but a podium would have been better.

Williams...yawn....

poor webber! Get him into a REAL car, not that damn green one.

Sauber...umm..what happened...yawn.

Reanult!!!!!!! Amazing...

my revised constructors finish ofr 04
1) Ferrari
2) Renault
3) Williams
4) Honda
5) McLaren
6) Sauber (close behind McLaren)

The next few races should be interesting. As much as I love Ferrair I hope we don't see a repeat of 2002....F1 doesn't need that.

Umm i live in alberta canada not socal.

Ferrari -> perfect. 1,2 PS: Barrichello had problems with his brakes after the 2nd pit stop. Because of this he was not able to continue to run close to Michael.

Williams -> Montoya bad start and pit stop team not helping put him down. Anyway, the results in the end were good.

Renault -> For now, the best after Ferrari. Alonso great start and driving. Trulli did the safe way and got some points too. Good work

BAR -> BAR is doing an amazing job. Heh, their problem was Jacques Villeneuve. The man left, and everything starts to work great  . Button and Sato did an amazing job.

Sauber -> Massa was pushing hard, trying to prove he's good. The spin and continue was incredible. Too bad the engine died on him. He deserved at least a 10 place. Sauber is a good team, but i'm kinda annoyed with "Fisico" performance. He raced more on out of the track than on the track itself. Does he want to go rally?

Toyota -> I'm very dissapointed. After last year amazing development, this year car seems to be very problematic and not so fast. Da Matta and Panis did what they could : Finish the race;

McLaren -> Everybody is dissapointed. After all work ( started before everybody else ) the car had problems. They practise less than everybody else in Albert Park, probably foreseeing Engine problems. Result: Raikonnen out in the first race and Coulthard struggling to finish 8th. The year does not look bright for Ron Dennis.

Jaguar -> continue to having problems, Webber does amazing things with "that" car. Klien? Can't say much of him, but he finished the race after all.

Jordan -> I think eddie has bigger problems than last year. The car is slow, no sponsors,... Heidfeld is a good driver, but Pantano already did stupid things. Almost got an strike on the pit stop mechanics. :D

Minardi -> We can't expect much of it, but it's our mascot. Bruni and Baumgartner did not finished, and seem to be very unexperienced. If i'm not mistaked Baumgartner is kinda of a Drifter. On the pre-qualifying he did most of the corners drifiting

Don't know what anyone else thought, but that race was so boring, espically after last year. There were a few good battles, particularly the ones with a Sauber in them, but they rarely resulted in an overtaking manoeuvres. After the first pit stops, there was about 3 seconds or more between everyone, apart from the Williams who weren't doing anything anyway. Yes Ferrari did a good job, but it was very 2002-ish.

BOO!!:P

Why does everyone say that the Jag is crap and it's just Webber  ?!?! Ok it was the car that let him down today, but I think Jag have come on a lot over the winter and will be up there with BAR. I'm not saying Webber's crap (I think he's actually saved Jaguar), but the car must be alright as well.
BTW I heard somewhere that if Jaguar finish 6th or higher this year in the constructors then Webber may stay with them. Anyone else heard this?

Roo: I comletly agree, it was good at the beggining, but it rapidly turned into a precesion about half way through.

I still think Montoya coulda won if Alonso did scoot into the grass then got closer to him. Then Montoya lost a great amount of Postions.

Here's the fastest laps of the race. Not great, I have to confess I simply lifted it from F1.com.

No i would have liked to see kimi win it too but ferrari is my main team i go with.

ferrari took the piss completely, all the winter hype about this being one of the closest season ever all came to nothing. Mclaren in major crisis. bridgestone have got there act togeather. if in sapang we get a repeat peformance (hope we dont) This season
and the sport could go into crisis.

f1 is my favorite sport but this race was very boring there were hardly any overtaking in the hole race. fans dont want to see cars overtaking in the pits.

Nice post, wee_man - I didn't realise Alonso had run at that pace. I'd assumed Montoya had done a quicker lap than the Renault.

Interesting also that Monty's fastest lap was 6 tenths faster than Ralf's best, too.

Raikkonen's engine must have never been right in the race, going by that lap time.

That also confirms how rubbish the Toyotas were.

Well, it seems again that Ferrari are the only one's to have arrived at the first race "on form". Those critics saying testing at "private tracks" is bad must be eating their words. They were really on the money from the get go.

McLaren seem to have lost the plot. Mis-handling chassis and underpowered engine (due to lowered revs for reliability) really made them look like also rans.

Renault and particularly Alonso looked very sharp. Everybody is bleating Monty and Kimi, but he is also in with a good shout if he and Renault continue like this.

Montoya showed again how his ego is his biggest barrier. Couldnt surrender the corner to a rival, and like Austria 2001 and Nurburg 2002 he cost himself positions. What a ponce.

And it seems Bridgestone have done their homework. Yes the race was in "cool" conditions, but qualifying wasnt. The next race should clear things up more.

Poor old Toyota. Mixing it with Jordan is a step back. And Fisi looked out of sorts too.

All in all, a swanky day for Ferrari :D

From where I was standing (outside and on the exit of Turn 14) the Ferraris had a setup right from the start of Friday practice, no other car was even close to coming through there like the 2 red cars
Sounded like the ferraris were dragging the brake through 14 while it was quite audible from every other car, you could here when they picked up the throttle

On another note, as much as I'll barrack for Ferrari, this sort of performance does not bode well for the rest of the season, and the other teams, especially McLaren, should be deeply worried by this perfomance

Ya they were saying on SPEED that there brakes must be having some kind of problem, from all the brake dust that was on the side pod air intakes.
