It appears the new style design in Japan is cars with "faces" and headlights that make it look like it's going super fast.

I think overall the previous one looked better but this one is not bad at all. But did it get bigger?

Looks like it has grown a bit. The front is taking on a similar design as the CX's are I think, while borrowing a pair of lights from an S2000. Looks nice, but less sporty in my opinion.

I've come out against the "mouth guard" grille that Mazda is using now before, and this again puts me on the fence. But for the rest of the car, it looks very good indeed. As someone who had been in the market to get one back in the spring, I'm very interested to see what the changes do inside and out.

But, I have one request:

Please Mazda, don't take away too much of the "feel" from the car...

Looks big. It's a well styled car, but it looks a lot bigger and heavier than the old one. They've got a lot of the Mazda 6 in there too.

Hopefully it'll still feel pretty light and drive like the older one.

The car as a whole doesn't look bigger, but the fascias look too big.. I dont' like the front but the back view is pretty nice.

Yeah I think it will definelty be heavier, although it can be made to feel light by Rigidity enhancements. Although it is still basically a small family car so one would not expect Mazda to make it 'overly' sporty.👍

Maybe it's just the way there are more styling elements lower on the car.

I assume none of us are really expecting a sports car out of this, but I know that I am hoping this car will be able to live up to having "the soul of a sports car" that the outgoing car seemed to do quite well.

^Which is a great thing. Finally carmakers (Ford and Mazda) are making slightly interesting everyday cars. Love the LED tailights... they should be compulsory in all new cars (IMO) :). Can't wait for the hatch to come out. It's the big one I've been looking forward to.

Really nice design. The back end is very much like the 6, and the front is quite like the RX8, with a hint of the 2 in the "haunches" over the front wheels.

When I was last at the dealer to get one of the 6's serviced, I went into the showroom to look around.
(My dream is an Infiniti G35, My Budget is a Mazda6:lol: )
Before I took out an '09 Mazda6, the sales guy that sold us all 3 of our Mazdas revealed that Mazda is going for a "family" look based on the RX-8.
So the entire line, except maybe the Tribute, has the bulged front fenders, and "face" of the RX.

If they put the 2.5L in the "upscale" 3, it will be a rocket.
The new motor only bests the old motor by 14 HP, but it feels completely different in the new 6.
The 2.5L 6 I drove felt way more powerful than the 2.3.
It was quieter, revved freer, and made the old "butt dyno" take notice.

We've grown to expect bigger and heavier with each successive generation. I owned a 1982 Mazda (323) GLC. It weighed less than 1900lbs. Each following generation of 323, Protege, and the 3 have gained weight. I'm not sure what the current 3 weighs, but I'll guess this one's over 3000lbs. I currently am driving a 1993 626 (Bought it bran-spankin-new in the fall of 92) with the 2.0 and 5speed manual trans. Despite weighing 3300lbs it gets around plenty fast to get in trouble. I could see replacing the 626 with one of these just fine. I hope the 2.0 isn't just in the base models like the current 3, I'd prefer the better gas mileage. The 2.0 puts out enough snort for my daily driving tastes.

Oh yeah, I don't really care for the ricerboy taillights.

Hit the Mazda web site, and use the "build a vehicle" feature.👍
www.mazdausa.com.

Keeping in mind that the following represent pricing on the '09 models:
Sadly, only 2 cars in the '09 lineup have the 2.0L motor available. One is the "low end" Mazda 3, and the Mx-5.
One of my sons has a 2008 Mazda3 with the "little" motor. It is more than peppy enough. He is also getting around 40 MPG out of it. (WITH AN AUTOMATIC)

You will likely lose HOURS on this site tricking out any Mazda you can think of.
A well-loaded Mazda3 iSport 4-door 2.0L with a 5-speed manual can be driven off the lot for about $17,800. (I added about $1700 in optional equipment).

The same car as a 5-door (wagon), equipped the same way, will run about
$20,100. However the 5-door can only be had with the 2.3L engine.

The 4 door sSport Mazda3, (2.3L w/5spd manual) well equipped, will set you back about $19,900

Yes I have played there a bit. I'm the odball that wants a wagon with a 2.0. I should just find a nice clean Protege5.

interesting: the weight of the current 4door is 2780lb for the 2.0 and 2906lb for the 2.3 (Both with 5 spd manual)
That's 126 lb more for the 2.3. It does have bigger wheels and brake rotors but, what else packs on the pounds? Is that 2.3 a bigger block?

They haven't hinted at whether that 2.5 might be a 4 or a 6 cylinder. Maybe a 5 cyl? It would be a first for Mazda. I'm betting on a big 4.

The 2.5 is likely the same one that is in the '08 Mazda6.
It's a 4, and a very nice one.
I've driven one, and It would be a lot of fun in the smaller Mazda3.

Whoops, I didn't realize the 2.5 already existed. That's a big 4. (Well maybe not compared to an Offenhauser) Is it equiped with ballance shafts to keep it smooth? Mitsubishi used to use them in their 4 cylinder engines up to 2.6 Liters.

The Mazda 3 is bigger in size, which probably hints towards the smaller Mazda 2/Demio finally making it to North America.

It really doesn't look bad, kind of a mini-6, a little more feminine-looking in the front, but not excessively so. I looked at the 2009 Mazda 3 last month, and the salesman was honest enough to tell me to wait for the new '10 model. Fair enough, but he must have been doing well enough that month...

Its sibling, the Ford Fiesta, will make it. I haven't heard from any reliable sources that they were certain we'd get it, but I guess at this point, it would be somewhat surprising if we wouldn't.

That would be the Speed version. I can't wait to see how it looks. The current one is an amazing mix of subtlety and aggression which they can hopefully replicate with this one. And 300 hp wouldn't be bad either. Great substitute for a Focus RS IMO.

They've gone and done it, the new 2010 Mazda3 Sedan has debuted ahead of its formal unveil at the LA Auto Show and it looks like Mazda has gone and finally used a pinch of that Nagare design language. Those bellyachers complaining the US never gets good-looking compact cars will no longer have anything to complain about as the new Mazda3 is a looker by any standard. It also has the goods to back those looks with a 2.0 liter four cylinder with 148 HP and 135 lb-ft of torque and a 2.5 liter four pumped up to 167 HP and 168 lb-ft of torque, both of which are mated to either a five-speed or six-speed manual transmission as well as a five-speed selectable automatic transmission.

This one may have to grow on me.

I want to love this car (duh, I’m a current M3 owner), and it mostly does well for itself, but that awful grille… is Mazda trying to out-Peugeot Peugeot? However, the headlights have this way cool Nagare-meets-BMW-angel-headlamps thing going on:

More pics here.
