2011 Australian Grand Prix

I have to say that FOM must have improved the microphones they use or something as the sound quality sounds vastly better! The McLaren's raspberry exhaust, the Ferrari's gear changes, the growl of the Renault...
I also think some of the camera angles are excellent, the camera placed at Alonso's shoulder was great and I like the use of cameras focusing on the rear wings. Seems the rear wings are causing balance issues for some drivers combined with the KERS affecting braking.

Even though it's only practice, Webber went medieval on his last lap.

He really needs to win this season, dammit.

An Ausralian winning the F1, not many people will like that.

But he should win as it has been ages since an Australian has won the F1

re: 107% rule.

if a driver doesn't post a time in Q1, are they allowed to race?

like in Monaco last year, when Alonso crashed in FP3 and could not qualify, he started from the pits. if that happens this year, is the driver allowed to start the race?

Their were no red flags in the F1 that i know of,

Yellow when when the lotus went off is the only one i know of.
And another yellow now in the Porchse Carrera Cup.

I'd like to see Webber win the Aussie GP. Glad to see Red Bull on top!:D

We can all guess who you want to win and to continue winning. :P

Anyone keep up with Pastor? I only caught his onboard footage once and it either looked as if he was struggling or just slow for the most part, or maybe I was just too busy watching Rubens...

I didn't see any of the practice on TV, didn't see anything but names and track times (the live timing on formula1.com). I'm too busy watching NCAA to find it streaming. Anyway, they showed an icon that the course was red flagged twice, which was obviously surprising. I know that a red flag brings a stop to any activity on course. I don't remember the timing of the first flag, but the second lasted from about 30 minutes left to 27 left. I guess it was just a bug in the timing. Weird.

As far as I could tell from the commentators if you are outside the 107% in the first session of qualifying then you dont race this would seem to include not setting a time for whatever reason.

EDIT: This from the official F1 site
107% qualifying rule
During the first phase of qualifying, any driver who fails to set a lap within 107 percent of the fastest Q1 time will not be allowed to start the race. However, in exceptional circumstances, which could include a driver setting a suitable time during practice, the stewards may permit the car to start.

Well if you use Webbers time and apply the 107% rule you will need to be faster than 1:54:848 which is easy to beat.

Are you kidding? Mark Webber gained a lot of worldwide popularity last season and he was many f1 insider's and journalists preference to win the championship. Mark is a hugely popular guy.

A lot of f1 fans were impressed with lotus' performance last season and they too have gained a lot of fans.

I direct you to the following links. Being new to F1, you seem quite misinformed.

Webber set a time of 1m26.831s. 107% of that is 1m32.9.

F1 in HD is a dream come true. This looks and sounds so great. I'm looking forward to the season even more now.

Anyone else catch the Star of David on Barrichello's helmet? I'm not trying to be a bigot, but it seems odd.

Yes it does. 👍 I have a LG 19' HD LED/LCD TV that is just hooked up to normal cable, and even I notice a difference. :dopey: Randy

1:32 sounds more right, i fail in math.

I know Webber is good but theirare a large amount of Webber haters out there.

1980 was the last time Australia won the F1. 30 years overdue in my view, even still with the new rules it is anyones guess. McLaren are faster than last season, same with Lotus.

But the fight will be between Ferrari and Redbull for constructors like last year.

Looks like it will start to rain in P2.

From what i've seen so far, Mercedes have made a beast of a car. Mclaren are also right up there, a lot of people underestimated them because of their poor runs in testing.

Red Bull are still far and away the fastest, I reckon over half a second, easily. But I think Ferrari have dropped down to 4th, I reckon Williams will be clipping at their heels. Renault seem to be a little slower than anticipated, partly no doubt due to the lack of Kubica at the wheel.

Also, Maldonado is a joke, he's only using half the circuit width. (Maybe a slight exaggeration)

That figures. I guess me noticing it is a result of HD. 👍

What makes you think this? It's still just practice.

Their into the 1:25:800's.

I wonder how fast they can go if they had a canopy over the cockpit to make the car more areodynamic?

Think you mean the driver's championship. Ferrari were third in the constructers last year, behind mclaren and red bull. That was down to Massa underperforming though.

I wonder if we're going to see anyone - and by "anyone", I mean Ferrari - going all out in Q1 tomorrow to try and thin the field out by eliminating cars ...

A good problem to have 👍

Interesting thoughts, we'll see soon enough. McLaren & Mercedes looking solid, I would love to see Schumi be a contender this year. And Rosberg. The more the merrier.

Will HRT even hit the track this weekend? Geesh...

Well, they were just firing the engine up on Liuzzi's car. Looks like they may just have to put tyres and bodywork on and they can get him out there.
