2014 New Zealand / Australia General Discussion

Hi all,

Only just found out yesterday that the GT Academy is now having an australia comp!

So did some research, and decided to dive right in, and see how far I can go.

I mainly dabble in iracing these days, although my DWC days are over for now, I still enjoy turning some laps. And the cars, with the latest tyre physics, are getting pretty awesome now :)

Anyway, some of you may know me, but probably alot will not, so I better introduce myself. :)

My name is Ian Lake, aka 'metal' (from GPL vroc days). I'm known as one of the original grand prix legend aliens. Won a GPLAC title one year, and won both GPL LAN championships when they were run back about 12 years ago.

I have represented aus before in sim racing (iracing) at the intel extreme masters a few years ago in hannover, germany. Didn't do very well actually. Got an ear infection on the way over, had some pretty bad jet lag, and I severely lacked practice due to work commitments in the leadup at home. So aiming to do alot better this time round.

So anyway, I didn't own a console til yesterday :P But i'm sure I can catch you fast buggers by the end of the comp :)

oh, almost forgot :) Bryan Heitkotter is on our sim racing team (podium assault) in iracing :embarrassed: I'm hoping I can emulate his success :)

And before anyone says anything about my bragging, i'm going to say this. I will probably not win. I'm now 36, and have no real racecar, and very little karting experience. And I actually think it's going to be friggen hard to even make the aus national finals for the sim racing leg. But, i'm going to try dammit! :D Got to be in it to win it, and this is the only chance I'll ever have of turning a long lost fantasy into a reality.

so HI to everyone and all, gl in the comp, and may the downforce be with you... :D

Cheers,
metal

/\ lol at psn user id reqs. the word metal is actually a banned word. took me 2 friggen hours to work that out! /\

Cool to see another iRacer having a crack! Haven't seen you around for a while Ian! Good luck in GT Academy, I might have to give it a go even though i'm 99% sure i'm not eligible.

Looks like Dan was the first to do it...pretty awesome stuff. Does he still get on GTPlanet any more these days?

What for?

holl01 - August 17 2009 - abuse, abuse, insults and, finally, racial abuse.

Pretty sure there were a few other accounts too that he came back on but couldn't remember the names.

Yeah pretty poor attitude there, no surprise though.

Makes his actions at his trip to race camp add up even more. Anyway, back on topic.

What is everyone's thoughts about the first 3 rounds? Me personally, i won't be spending too much time on them until the final round. Saying that, i'll probably spend a few hours and a few days on them, but not wasting my time doing any more than that.

He is more settled down now, he races in a league in Raceonoz and he is good to have battles with, very fast but a bit inconsistent.

Just wondering is someone could point me to the full set of rules somewhere?

And also does the times through all the rounds count or is it just the final round?

Bit inconsistent, he is consistent at being faster then me every time

You need a bit more practise mate ;)

I remember racing him in a one-make lobby around two months ago with drivers from all over. He was very quick but had a gut-feeling that he just got the game quite recently. Needless to say having the username "GTP_DHolland" chase you around Spa gives you a bit of a cold sweat but man it was a good feeling to win that race :D

Watched the replay a couple of times and it almost seemed like Dan gifted me the win but I'll take a win against an alien any day of the year regardless of circumstances

I don't think the official rules and regulations get published until registrations for the final round open. As probably stated in this thread before it's only the final round times that count.

I saw him at the Melbourne F1 GP this year and you wouldn't think its the same guy, he seems very quiet and mild mannered, guess racing changes that :P

I won't be putting too much time into the first three rounds either, instead Im spending time on all the other tracks as last finals I was way off the pace on all the tracks other than Indy. Also Muggo can you not go to the live qualifiers so I have more of a chance to get through with my crappy time :P haha

Am I right in saying its only really worth practicing the real life tracks and not the GT only tracks? Ie Bathurst, Silverstone, Spa etc but not the original GT tracks?

If your really serious about it drive everywhere, getting used to the physics is the main part if your new to this game.

No, drive them all.

Last National final for example we raced on Tokyo R246. And I have seen them race at other national finals at places like Trial Mountain, Grand Valley etc.

Yikes! Ok! Thing is I think practicing them is one thing but extracting time like we have with this leaf on Brands is an entirely different prospect! I have played most tracks but mostly casually to win the game...not to extract the 99% from the track....I think that's what it is going to take!

Josh or last years participants, how many previous contestants are taking part and near the top again this year?!

As long as you get used to the physics of the game and how to extract time from the physics and the game, you will be fine.

Instead of doing all of the tracks, concentrate on a couple and use them as practice to extract time out of. Or just use the next few GTA rounds as that practice.

You can learn a track pretty quickly, and 2 weeks is plenty of time to be able to get that last 1% out of it.

So get your head around the physics and the game, that is going to be the challenging part for a GT new comer.

Thanks Josh - I guess I am not new to the game as such....just more of a casual player...hence I have raced a fair amount but only as far as progressing through the game. More practice is obviously the only way forward!

Yeah I used to talk to Dan a lot back in the day when I played GT week in week out and raced against him a lot. We always had a great rivalry, definitely a nice guy but like all of us, probably shows his competitive side every known then!

The last 2013 GTACADEMY, we got to sample the R35 GT3. Any chance we'll get a V8 Supercar as a surprise Nissan to use this year?

Your hope for a V8 Supercar in GT6 (bar the 2000 XR8) is probably only rivaled by my hope for NZ to be included in GT Academy (bar the 2010 one)

Both of them will hopefully see light at some point in the near future 👍

One of he Raceonoz guys MINT-GTR topped the Live event lap time today in the QLD qualifier, still no one has cracked the 1:03s got a feeling the setup is very bad.
