2014 New Zealand / Australia General Discussion

Weeellllll.....I am actually a Brit in disguise but I am a permanent resident and I have an Aussie wife and kid....does that count?!?! Seriously though, not sure how that would work out if I were to progress....I think however this is a moot point and we'll not have to worry too hard about that!

Residency (not citizenship) is normally the criteria for competitions. Playing on an Australian PSN is probably recommended too. Obviously only an issue if you actually want to progress.

This is a bit of pain this year how they've decided to release the virtual Academy challenges and not have the official rules and regulations to go along with it. Not sure what the requirements were in previous years but the optimist in me says that you only need the passport of the participating country to compete under that participating country...which probably needs that country's citizenship anyway.

@TAshleySmith if you still have your British passport you may be able to compete in the European Academy under a British flag so I recommend setting up a British PSN and have the details you put in the sign-up form mail things out to someone you know in the U.K. if you haven't done so already 👍

If you can find me a geographically defined competition that does not require you to be a resident of the said geographical location, I will be very surprised.

In short, my expectation for the eligibility rules (ignoring PSN account location)
- AU resident and citizen = of course
- AU resident, non-AU citizen (ie @TAshleySmith)= fine
- non-AU resident, AU citizen (ie me) = not eligible
- non-AU resident, non-AU citizen = forget it

Does the option I highlighted mean that you've got AU citizenship and an AU passport but you're not currently living in Australia?

From my recollection you are still eligible to compete in the AU Academy. The only issues are how will you receive Sony/Nissans correspondence (relatively easy to sort out) and how will Sony/Nissan get you to and from the national final (a little more tricky especially if you're all the way on the other side of the world) if you qualify.

Correct. Born and raised in Australia, but moved to the Netherlands last year.

I would have thought that if I had the skill and desire to seriously compete in GT Academy this year, I would be eligible for the Dutch part as I have a resident permit here right now.
In practice it means nothing to me, but will be interesting to see the wording on the T&C's.

At least you can compete! I currently have very little to no motivation to give the upcoming Academy TTs a proper crack and this most likely won't change unless some genius manages to convince the Nissan/PlayStation AU reps at the V8 Supercars this coming weekend to bring the competition back to New Zealand...

At least you get 5 years to prepare!

Assuming they don't take the competition away again in that time ;)

Yes. Definitely a problem with the car.

I love how people will go for "this car is too slow" before they go for "I am too slow". Everyone has the same car.

Ha ha its also probably my driving ability. But I'm not going to admit that :P joking. I need one more years practice and it should be on the ps4 by then. I'll be ready then

Hi all,

Only just found out yesterday that the GT Academy is now having an australia comp!

So did some research, and decided to dive right in, and see how far I can go.

I mainly dabble in iracing these days, although my DWC days are over for now, I still enjoy turning some laps. And the cars, with the latest tyre physics, are getting pretty awesome now :)

Anyway, some of you may know me, but probably alot will not, so I better introduce myself. :)

My name is Ian Lake, aka 'metal' (from GPL vroc days). I'm known as one of the original grand prix legend aliens. Won a GPLAC title one year, and won both GPL LAN championships when they were run back about 12 years ago.

I have represented aus before in sim racing (iracing) at the intel extreme masters a few years ago in hannover, germany. Didn't do very well actually. Got an ear infection on the way over, had some pretty bad jet lag, and I severely lacked practice due to work commitments in the leadup at home. So aiming to do alot better this time round.

So anyway, I didn't own a console til yesterday :P But i'm sure I can catch you fast buggers by the end of the comp :)

oh, almost forgot :) Bryan Heitkotter is on our sim racing team (podium assault) in iracing :embarrassed: I'm hoping I can emulate his success :)

And before anyone says anything about my bragging, i'm going to say this. I will probably not win. I'm now 36, and have no real racecar, and very little karting experience. And I actually think it's going to be friggen hard to even make the aus national finals for the sim racing leg. But, i'm going to try dammit! :D Got to be in it to win it, and this is the only chance I'll ever have of turning a long lost fantasy into a reality.

so HI to everyone and all, gl in the comp, and may the downforce be with you... :D

Cheers,
metal

/\ lol at psn user id reqs. the word metal is actually a banned word. took me 2 friggen hours to work that out! /\

How the hell you guys coming up with those insanely fast lap times??:boggled::ill:

I'm just in it to see if I can crack top 1000, 2000 places to improve yet.lol

I don't think I'll ever be able to win to a final in a wildest dream, even if I did, although I reside in New Zealand, I can't see my country ever going to support non-Kiwi asian anyway.lol If I were a kiwi I wouldn't.lol

25-30% of New Zealand's 2010 finalists weren't NZ born. Ayrton Senna was Brazilian and they worshiped him in Japan. I'm sure if someone is fast and charismatic enough there's no reason why they can't go the same route.

I'd be curious how many frequent GTP'ers are in that list, there's 10 with the GTP prefix though for what it's worth 👍

Yep, not bothered anymore until the final round.

I'll be Golding the next 2 rounds and spending about an hour on each.

Well - Did not have much time over the weekend! This baby malarky takes a lot of time! Lol! Also went go-karting on Sunday.... I really enjoy it, wich I had done it as a youngster...I think I have only been 5 times in my entire life!

Weirdly I got about 30mins on saturday and with my first lap i broke into the 1:03:9xx or something close to that, it was either that or 1:03:895... anyway, jumped to about 2600th in the world...the competition is really fierce! I am pretty happy with that time. I might do a few more attempts but otherwise will just practice other combos....anyone got any ideas what we should be practicing? Also does anyone know how to get a decent online race going....I find cars are unevenly matched or people race stupid or jump in and out of lobbies too much for me to enjoy a decent online race?!

You got time on a Sunday night for a race at about 830? Because if you do have a look at www.raceonoz.com.au we race every sunday with different division. Check it out if you want spaces available, first race of the season is this weekend so be quick, also there is an $850 prize draw at the end of the season

Very good Place to race against the best, highly recommend drivers who are coming from other sims for Gt academy to take part, helps familiarize the physics when you are racing high level competition.

Kiwis welcome? I think I got an invite for this after the first stock GT6 seasonal ended but have been quite slack with turning up to organized events unless Nissans are being driven...

...Which brings us to the other point - @Wardez will you be running the GT Acacdemy practise lobbies this year? Those were always plenty of fun when I managed to be up late enough to join :D
