2015 Rolex Australian Grand Prix

How could you possibly read that as an insult to mustafur's intelligence when it was him telling me that I don't watch F1, when he doesn't know me at all, and I know that, whilst I didn't watch too much F1 in seasons before that, I did watch almost every important session in F1 in 2014...

All I am saying is one that can see with clarity can see why Redbull choose Kyvat over Vergne if they did watch all the Qualifying and Race footage.

There was countless times Kyvat was showing speed one wouldn't expect an STR to be even Capable of, this was the case at several circuits that I mentioned before(This suggests the talent is there).

You have to keep in mind Vergne was very unlikely to get much better then what he did because he was seasoned by that point and has had 3 full seasons producing nearly mirror image results in all 3, suggesting a plataeu in performance.
Where as Kyvat had Very little experience and had much higher highs but with the inevitable lower lows(Suggesting Talent is there but is still Raw).

But Redbull was forced to choose when Vettel left and it went with the driver that can Develop into a driver with Champion Potential then a driver that is merely a place holder at best.

That is why, Redbull did say that they wanted one more year of Kyvat at STR though but the situation forced his arrival early.

Also Vergne was never close to Ricciardo in Redbulls eyes, in Qualifying Ricciardo was Destroying him consistently in both seasons to the point they where almost on the opposite sides of the grid in many races.

Combining that with the fact back then Q3 required you to use an extra set of softs which hurt you in the race(this helped Vergne as he rarely made it to Q3) and the fact most of Vergnes big points come from opportunistic situations.

Pace wise there was no comparison, even in 2012 when Vergne scored much more points Redbull even said Ricciardo was the better driver that year.

When it comes to Sainz jnr vs Verstappen this will be the exact method Redbull will use to judge the drivers, they will care basically 0% about points scores and focus purely on who has the most pace when it's required.

Qualifying is one of the best measures of that as well.

Nope. Whatever the software issue was, it prevented them from getting the cars on track in every session.

Edit: BBC reported they wouldn't be racing, but I think they jumped too quickly on reporting it as other sources were just reporting that they had been called to the stewards.

I would be surprised if the stewards allowed them to race.

The engine regulations need fixing, this token nonsense is not working, imagine if they did what they are doing to the engines with the Development restriction, to the Aerodynamics.

It would essentially mean in 2009 for example, Brawn starts with massive advantage that no one is allowed to do anything about but finish behind them in a inferior car they can't really improve.

It's more than just a "software issue" - they pretty much have to rebuild all of their trackside operations from square one. When they were faced with liquidation, a lot of their data was wiped so that their assets could be sold. But then they were saved, and there was no way to recover that data. It's not just engine mapping that they lost, but also the means for the engine components to communicate with one another, and for the data to be processed into useful information on the pit wall.

How the hell is it warmer here than over there?

EDIT: That's Melbourne, Derbyshire...

Given the pace Mercedes has, would it be even possible for Manor to drive within 107% this season with their 2014 car?

Three consecutive Q. results like this in the summer of 2013 have been enough to print this last idea in your memory. I'm just fact-correcting a detail, not arguing the overall point, which sounds right to me ;)
Ricciardo was consistently a bit faster in Q.

last year it was raining though.

That was towards the end of Q1, then in Q2 and Q3. The fast Q1 times were set on a dry track at pretty much the same temperature as this year's Q1 session. Hamilton's Q1 time last year was the same as the McLaren's this year, give or take a few tenths.

Given the pace Mercedes has, would it be even possible for Manor to drive within 107% this season with their 2014 car?

They'd need to run a 94.7 (from Hamilton's 88.5), I think that should be do-able.

In other news, Bottas may not race after injuring his back in Q2. Sorry if that's been covered, the last few pages have been a bit... erm. :D

Given that they are at the same engine stage now as Mercedes was then, it shows how much development curve they and Honda have in front of them.

A lot.

I'm surprised they are allowed to start. Aren't they so slow that they represent a danger to the other runners?

In other years possibly not; but with the closing rate of these current cars, and the weakness of the McLaren being straight-line speed, anyone coming up to lap one will have to be on their toes.

Given that Turn one will take out half the field and both Mclarens will likely break down eventually we need all the cars we can get

Anyone notice that Button also qualified 17th last time he drove a Honda powered unit in Australia?

Sniff Petrol's brilliant F1 season preview:
http://sniffpetrol.com/2015-formula-1-guide/#.VQSRko7F-8J

Some of my favourite parts:
Meanwhile, Jenson Button’s life is being made harder by Mark Webber who keeps texting him pictures of things that are faster than the McLaren such as his Porsche 919, his dog and his house.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez will continue to confuse F1 fans by doing something that leads you to think he’s quite good and then following it with something that leads you to believe he’s a blithering idiot. In addition to this, there are concerns that he will struggle to drive consistently at the start of the season due to uncontrollable fits of merciless laughter every time he sees the McLaren.
