Nissan to study Raptor rival
In Australia this week for the launch of the Series III Nissan Navara, the Japanese manufacturer’s senior vice-president of LCV, Ashwani Gupta, told GoAuto that creating a high-performance version of the Navara along the same lines as Ford’s forthcoming new Ranger Raptor was now under study, following meetings with executives from Nissan Australia who were the driving force behind the project.

“If you would have asked me this question yesterday, I would have said that this was not in our priority. But if you’re asking this question today, I would say that this is a opportunity which we would like to study,” he said.

“The key factor to go to study the sports utility, or high-end sports series, is only the powertrain.
Asked whether Nissan could leverage its partnership with Daimler and use the 190kW/550Nm 3.0-litre V6 diesel used in the Navara-based Mercedes-Benz X-Class, just as Daimler uses Nissan’s four-cylinder engines on lower-series variants, Mr Gupta told GoAuto: “We have every technology to do that. The question is, we study, and if it makes sense for the customer and for the business, we will do it.

“We have not yet checked it (Daimler V6 diesel), but for sure, from today, we will study that: what kind of specification we need for the high-end frame-based SUVs and pick-ups.”

Mr Gupta said the company could easily tap into in-house performance partners such as Nismo – or those from alliance partners Renault (Renault Sport) or even Mitsubishi (Ralliart) – for chassis development rather than outsourcing to a specialist provider.

“We have every technology to do it by ourselves. We have Nismo, we have Renault Sport,” he said.

First drive V6 Benz X-Class to be most popular popular

Finally saw one during the morning school run. Front looks like a Mercedes for sure. Similar to an E-Class from a couple years ago.

As far as how awesome the truck looks cool overall outside, I'm not digging its utilitarian interior at all although it's still acceptable. Nissan could have made it more premium by offering more soft pads over hard plastics and a design would fit such sporty looking truck.

Btw, it already has an SUV twin, too. It came out last year, around 4 years after the Navara launched first.

Well really, just what did they expect?! I've seen maybe 5 in total and they offer so little extra over any of the other similar offerings in the class.

In Exeter at least, they were sold at the Commercial dealership, well away from the car dealer site.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class: Dead. https://www.carscoops.com/2019/07/m...lass-over-poor-sales-cost-cutting-initiative/

So it will be dropped from the lineup due to underwhelming sales, and as part of MB's cost-cutting initiative. Total sales for the X-Class globally were roughly 15,000.
Well, I think it's a good looking truck with premium amenities inside but it doesn't hide the fact that it's still a borrowed model from Nissan, only that it's fitted with round badges by MB, as well as having their usual styling cues on it.

So it's not a true masterpiece made by themselves from scratch at all. Nevertheless, I also liked the unique V6 TDI on this one, something that's not offered yet on both siblings from Renault and Nissan.

Hey! Saw my second X-Class while en route to a quarry. A black one entering a cattle/farm paddock, in the little town of Paterson.

As Mustafur posted, I'd think the Australian market would be keen on these.

Saw a dark grey X-Class in my neighborhood. Just need to see a silver one, to complete the resale value color palette.

An X-class work ute just drove past me. Couldn't get my phone out quick enough(after just putting it in my pocket!). White with black over fenders. Racks sticking out of the bed and cloth tonneau cover. No signage though.

Really weird if MB are discontinuing it. I figured the Australian market would buy them and it shows, from what I've been seeing.

If an SUV variant of the X-Class exists, I wonder if'd look much better than the Pathfinder's current Navara-based successor.

MB just released a 7-seater SUV. Probably the size of a Macan. It's not ugly(to me).

It looks like a crossover similar to Hyundai's Santa Fe but lower, also somewhat reminiscent of a station wagon. What I'm wondering about is an SUV based on the X-Class platform.
I got you. I'm going off looks. What style would MB choose? Like the GLB or the GLS?

Or something similar to that Navarra SUV with chopped top?

Maybe something like the G Wagon? Just kidding.

If they'd like, my guess would be something significantly larger that has a body-on-frame platform like the Toyota Land Cruiser or the Nissan Patrol Y62. But I highly doubt that because of the presence of the new GLS. ;)

Just saw a white X-class with black AMG GT3 style stripes. It's not a bad looking ute. Shame it didn't take off like the Amarok.

You know, I saw for the first time in Australia, an F-150 Raptor. It was silver and I thought it looked different to the Ranger Raptor. The main thing wasn't to just the notable size difference, it was that I'd had black over fenders. Made it look like a Baja racer.

A baby Titan would make sense. There's a Navara(Frontier) Sport model sold here. Don't know how many Nissan are selling, but making the next model look more like the Titan, would probably get more people in the showrooms.

The Ranger Raptor has the Same Fenders.

Would it be different compared to the current D23 NP300 Navara pickup in the markets today? I just hope the interior gets a premium treatment this time compared to the utilitarian interior of the latter.

People don't go into the showrooms for the Titan itself. IMO it's not a bad looking truck but I don't share an opinion with most it seems. Chevy takes the cake when it comes to ugly trucks right now...

As far as the Frontier goes, I haven't seen it yet so I can't comment on the design, but I do know it'll be on the current frame with new engines and transmissions. And it's actually not coming until 2022.
