TRD Prius because even environmentalists are car enthusiasts?

There are plenty of Prius customers who just want to save gas. The dealer close to me can get you in one for Just over 22k. That is not really bad economy for a work beater you plan on keeping 300k miles.

So as an economic refrigerator I see nothing wrong with it. Not my cup of tea, I would rather grind up a Honda Fit for 300k and have a more enjoyable car for my tastes. But to each their own.

This is what bothers me about Toyota hybrid units: the price.

I am unfamiliar with US prices, but a new Prius over here will set you back 20,000€ at the very least. When I had to turn in my GT86 after an accident, somewhere I was hoping for a Yaris Hybrid replacement car. Because I do think the latest Yaris is a good looking car, and I have always wanted to experience a hybrid.

But walking through the showroom, I failed to understand why their hybrid units are so expensive. Even the Yaris Hybrid was equally as expensive. Hell, for a lot less I would've just gone for the 1.0 petrol engine and be equally as fuel cautious as the hybrid unit. I know that hybrids aren't the future, but they are a start in the right direction, and it does not make much sense to me pricing them this expensive.

That's one of the reasons why people over here buy Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Accent's...etc over the Prius since the Prius costs around $26237 or so. A normal eco car will probably costs less than half the price. I mean even with the %60 fuel price raise, i have only seen a Prius once on the road. It's still a new car and people already disliking it for the design and price alone.

Admittedly that was a rock bottom poverty spec 2015 we had quoted last year. Comparably a Fit would be nearly top spec, and you are within spitting distance of a base Fiesta ST also.

But if you planned on keeping it for a very long time it may just balance out.

In my eyes it is no worse than blowing 70k on a fully dolled up pickup truck, polar opposites, yet both owners are making a statement of sorts.

Does this have 2 horsepower instead of 1? Still a 100% increase!

In other news...

There's this... (god help us)

I apologize if this has been posted before.
I like the Prius a lot more in GT300 spec than in street spec. It looks so much better. Also, the fact that it has an LMP1 engine in it makes it that much better.

I don't know how much the manufacturing of the Yaris Hybrid costs exactly but I wouldn't be surprised if it was significantly more than what the manufacturing of a regular Yaris is due to the electric motors, extra batteries, etc... And on top of that I'm fairly certain that the regular Yaris comes to your dealership from France but the Hybrid is imported from Japan, which obviously cost more than importing from France.

My mom have an Yaris Hybrid and they are made in france.

Difference of price between a basic Yaris and a Hybrid with all option is 5.2k euro. You save insurance with an hybrid and you save licencing plate I think too. Also not sure about the level of equipement with the basic Yaris but the Hybrid have everyhting at that price. Fuel consumption is basically the same, 3.9 for normal vs 3.7 for hybrid. You're releasing much less co2, 75 vs 93.

I know my mom is really happy with her and she drive a lot, she did like 140k km in 1 and a half year.

Yeah it's still horrible. The 3rd generation Prius I felt like was actually nearly desirable. The body and spirit of the car had this kind of Citroen DS tributary ethos to me (advanced technology made accessible, and wearing that technology on it's sleeve, purpose and aesthetic nearly indistinguishable) and the interior had a kind of blade-runner esque 'lived-in' futuristic quality to it. I've never driven one, but they conceptually fit the mold of the archetypal middle class 'people's car' in a way that the DS did; not merely an appliance, like a Corolla, (though some would argue the Prius is just that) but a well-considered machine where robustly fulfilling the concept was job 1. I think the 2nd and 3rd gen Prius may be valuable one day, in fact.

The 4th gen Prius is just a mess. It's simultaneously boring and revolting at the same time. Good job Toyota, I don't know how you pulled that one off. The interior is a huge step back as well, it just looks amateurish.

I've actually never minded the current Prius's styling, but the one above is still an improvement. The interior feels better than it looks too - the previous Prius cabin was aesthetically swoopy but felt a bit naff, whereas this is the other way around.

These things are so relaxing to drive though. Any aggression you might have had when you step in is gone within the first mile.

I actually enjoy the current generation Prius. Unfortunately they don't sell all that well (probably partially due to the styling) and the lack of AWD where I live. This might change things around and they'll actually leave the lot. Wonder if the AWD will be on the Prius Prime/PHEV Plug-In as well.

I don't know the difference, but the one with the Mirai style front and rear is better than the one with rear lights down into the bumper.

2019 Prius gains AWD variant, looks more acceptable than before (facelift applies to 2WD variant too).

Feel free to crucify me, everyone, but I do find this pretty. Yeah, taillights look rather questionable, but other than that it has no ugly bits anymore (well, at least to me).

On a second thought, it looks like it has a clever, cunning master plan.

I'm disappointed. They tried making it boring again.
I honestly do not understand the point of such commentaries towards cars that aren't supposed to be remotely exciting in the first place. Especially considering how most of modern manufacturers try to make their boring-grade cars more exciting, practically setting up new standards for boring as a result. Thus I'd like to learn more about why do you think like that.

I couldn't care less about what it was intended to be. The last-gen Prius was a boring suburban neighborhood car and while the current-gen looks completely hideous, it was at the very least an interesting vehicle to look at. Toning-down the looks is a smart decision on their part but I'm a bit sad to see that the weirdness going away.

When you live in an area where streets are littered with Prii (I'm looking at you, Private Hire Taxis), the design loses the "interesting" factor real quick.

I'm going to have to agree with @SiriusR on the sentiment that the Prius doesn't have to be an interesting vehicle to look at. It has already gained a reputation as the Uber driver's vehicle of choice, so I doubt buyers who would be swayed by more adventurous styling would make a significant difference in overall sales. Besides, the new Corolla Hybrid is virtually the same size and fits the "interesting to look at" quota rather well.
