I'm guessing it is something to do with making the car more aerodynamic.

It's just so awful. Plus, that hideous floating roof thing. Floating roofs need to stop. There is nothing attractive about it, no company has ever done it right, and they'll never will.

Typically you want is a hard line at the sides of the rear glass to curtain the air in so that it won't "fall" off at the sides. I'm assuming the deep crease in the middle does similar, but you will still have air falling off the sides of the rear glass. I'm guessing, though, that having the extra deep dip causes a vacuum that pulls the air towards the center without the use of traditional air curtains on the roof.

I just realized:

The car was actually designed to be looked at from this one specific angle. Here, the proportions of the body actually look sexy. Until you realize that the rear tire is two sizes too small in this forced perspective.

Did the designer work at a funhouse in a previous life?

I'm shocked by how much better this car looks (in pictures) than the standard Prius. It is almost a night/day difference, and the Camry style front goes a long way to make the car look like a reasonable alternative to the rather good-looking Ioniq and Volt. I do have to wonder if, like the current Prius PHEV, it'll be that much cheaper than the Volt, let alone the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV. With the 2015 model knocking in at just $3k less than the new Volt, which in itself has more than double the potential mileage of the Prius Prime - what's the point?

I'm gonna need some help on this one guys...

Why are there two different-looking versions of the exact same car? They both have four doors, they both have a hatchback, they're both Prii, but they look completely different. I do not understand. Is one of these the Euro market car and the other is US or what? And why is the "old" new version (the red one) considerably more ugly than the new new version (the green one)?

The Prius Prime will be sold alongside the Prius IV in the markets the latter car is sold in. The last Plug-in Prius looked identical to the normal model, so perhaps they want to make the Prime distinctive this time.

Oh I see, they're differentiating the plug-in version. Thanks guys. Luckily it actually looks better so, price notwithstanding, it should sell pretty well.

I think I'd still rather have a Volt, idk. For the type of short-commute driving than many people do, that car has the more clever system.

Is it mandatory that the rear has to look hideous?

I think Toyota is in a pinch in that regard. The Chevrolet is maybe $3k more, has double the EV range, and presumably puts down a good bit more power. The Hyundai Ioniq will probably be cheaper (knowing Hyundai, anyway), and will also have a better EV range (3ish miles ain't much). I'm not sure who Toyota is going for other than entrenched Prius buyers.

This car looks like a total joke in person. It looks so much worse in person. It's like an ugly toy car. Totally ridiculous. I still don't understand why people buy Toyotas. There isn't a single Toyota that I would buy over one of its competitors.

You got up on the wrong side of bed this morning or something?

Nowt wrong with it in person. Still not the most attractive of things, but it's better than in pictures and the cabin is quite refreshing. Bright, clear, spacious.

Do you know that feeling that you've been looking forward to things for so long, and then when they finally arrive they're awful? That was my auto show experience.

That was the Philly Auto Show for my dad and I when we used to go there. I think we only went twice, and aside from a few of my favorite cars (Ford GT, Lamborghini Murciélago), it was a major letdown. We haven't been there since.
