See, this is what's so damn confusing about IRL. They hold two different races halfway around the world at the same time?

And only half of the teams compete during each race or something? I really don't understand this crap.

Yes confusing, Only if you haven't been folowing this thread or developments in the series for the past two months.

I say the Panoz DP-01 should find its way to the IndyCar Series so we can get Paul Tracy to not want to race an ICS "crap wagon" in this series. Only problem with turbos to me has to do with dealing with some turbo fires, perhaps greater costs for the engines, and stuff like that. I best remember the engine sounds from Champ Cars back in the mid-late 1990s. Listening to those things were just sweet music.

Could you see push-to-pass working in the IndyCar Series? Or do you think the setup of the cars and level of competition doesn't warrant having something like push-to-pass for more exciting racing?

I think the Push-2-Pass would be good to have on road courses, but I think it would be a bit dangerous on ovals.

As for the split weekend, Omnis, this only occurred because officials running the Motegi event refused to reschedule, likely because Long Beach is (though likely not anymore) sponsored by Toyota, and Motegi is sponsored by Honda, the sole engine supplier. Weekends such as this won't happen again.

I would like to see the standing start be implimented for road and street course races myself.;) As demonstrated by Will Power on Sunday, you can get into the lead right away with a well executed launch off of the start.

Oh, ok. Yeah, I didn't mean to be as critical as I sounded in that post. I still don't like how only half the drivers race at once.

So does that mean the Panoz cars use Toyota engines?

Well, I was just thinking that there's more lapping that goes on at ovals, and some of them are dangerous enough as it is, one that comes immediately to mind is Texas.

Now if you're talking about speed and danger... anyone remember when ESPN shown a lap around Texas Motor Speedway in a (then) CART Champ Car in 2001? It scares me even to this day because the cars were so fast around Texas. It was cancelled due to safety concerns of racing so fast around there.

Some say the Texas Motor Speedway is the spiritual home of the IndyCar Series since so many good races have taken place at Texas. How do you think the Panoz DP-01's would be accepted by racers if this becomes the spec car to use at all IndyCar Series events (including the Indy 500)?

Congratulations to Will Power for winning the 2008 Long Beach GP.

I would be surprised if PT didn't have a ride for Indy, and I would be absolutely appalled if he didn't have a full time ride for the '09 season, even though he's been known as Mr. Controversy (a la the fight with Tagliani, the shoving match with Sea Bass, etc, etc.), you have to admit Tracy is a hell of a driver and he damn near won the Indy 500 in '02 (how could you forget that epic battle with Helio?). I think Paul will get over the fact the the IRL cars are crapwagons if he gets a competitive ride.

I like the idea of the turbo motors, but with the 'green' movement of sorts taking place in motorsports, and the fact that the Honda engines in the IRL run on 100% ethanol, I would think it would be hard to make a turbo engine make the same power on a different fuel, I'm not an expert on turbos or fuel, but if somebody can find a way to make a turbo engine make 700HP and run on ethanol, go for it. :)

On ovals, I think it would be simply impractical as you have to hold down the button to get the Power-2-Pass effects, it's not like NOS where you can flip it on and off at free will which may distract the driver when he's approaching the turns. Plus, the cars go plenty fast enough on ovals, and if the driver feels the need to pass, they could just slipstream (or draft for you NASCAR folk ;)).

Will's start was fantastic, he was unstoppable, although I give Tagliani credit for battling Power in the Walker Racing car, whose team were basically Derrick and some of the few employees he hasn't let go and some volunteers.

Hopefully he can find a sponsor, hire up his team again and field a car in the IRL either this season or next season.

Also, I heard today that Pacific Coast Motorsports will field a car part time in the IRL with Mario Dominguez, who finished 3rd in the Long Beach GP.

Car Count: 27

I saw a replay of that start by Will Power. He powered (no pun intended) his way down the front stretch at Long Beach. It was absolutely killer. As far as Paul Tracy goes, I love Paul Tracy. He's controversial and can be a punk sometimes, but he's a lovable punk. He's a true veteran to the series who has been in it for about 15 years or so and has one championship to show for it in 2003. Paul Tracy finally winning a championship in 2003 is kind of like Danica finally winning this past weekend. Speaking of the 5'2" brunette... ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" had a question in Toss Up about who made the better female sports acheivement- Danica Patrick at Motegi or Billy Jean King's win against Bobby Riggs in 1973. Co-hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon agreed that while Billy Jean King's win over Bobby Rigg was basically an exhibition against a 55-year old man, they concluded that Danica Patrick's win was in a championship setting against other highly-competitive teammates. Something about me is that I'm never too quick to put something in history so quickly and admire it as such. Danica's win was a good one, but I'm just not ready to say "best-ever," though it was the first IndyCar win by a female. I still don't have her over people like Lyn St. James and Janet Guthrie. She's only won one race. Maybe if she wins even more races and maybe a championship as well, THEN we might put her up for discussion as far as the Mount Rushmore of women in racing. And I love Danica, of course.

The talking point about Kansas is that there isn't really enough time to prepare after kind of a long weekend in Japan. I question the level of fitness and possible fatigue from Japan and Long Beach heading into the Kansas race. Anyone want to speculate on Kansas before we all make ready for May Madness (the Indy 500)?

I don't think fatigue will be a factor. The Champ Car teams probably haven't developed their non-Indy setups well enough to take advantage of having their race on the continent last week.

If you're wondering what other rounds from the CCWS that the IndyCar Series will be racing on, this is what I found on CBSSports.com:

Well damn, i really was excited about the races at Assen and Jerez and Zolder, That sucks.

Absolutely tough break for Danica at Kansas. The Midwesterner from Wisconsin was unable to finish due to some pit troubles (something to do with the right rear tire during a pit stop). Congratulations to Dan Wheldon. And believe it or not, both of last week's winners failed to finish today. Danica DNF'ed, and so did Will Power. Up next is what I call "May Madness" as the Indianapolis 500 is next on the fight card.

John's Debate! - First Impressions and Danica Patrick
(1) What rookie in the IndyCar Series (even including Champ Car regulars) has impressed you the most so far? What rookie in the IndyCar Series has failed to impress you?

(2) I'll need some percentages from you all for this one on Danica Patrick. What are the chances (out of 100%)...

a.) ...that Danica wins this year's Indianapolis 500?
b.) ...that Danica wins another race this season?
c.) ...that she finishes 3rd of higher in the final championship standings?

I did. Marty Roth deserved it after hitting Tomas Scheckter's front tire changer and then running over that guy's foot.

Scheckter's tire changer was lucky that Roth ran over him with the wing and not the nose cone, otherwise he would've had bigger problems to deal with.

EJ Viso has impressed me, the last 3 races (including long beach) he's finished 14th, 9th and 4th.

On the contrary, Bruno Junqueira and Oriol Servia haven't impressed me, they're 2 drivers that have done some oval races, and have had success when Champ Car did ovals, but so far neither of them have posted a top 10 finish on an oval.

A) 35%
B) 50%
C) 40%

Was at Indy today.... Practice was good and sound was wonderful.. ah I know where I will be spending some time at!! ;) haha

Did you guys hear about one of the N/H/L racing mechanics getting killed Sunday night?

Pole day for the 92nd Indy 500 was yesterday, positions 1-11 were filled, today's qualifying will fill positions 12-22, and I believe next Saturday is bump day where the remaining spots will be filled.

indy500poleday1my0.gif

Drivers who took time yesterday, but missed the top 11 include Graham Rahal, Davey Hamilton, Justin Wilson, Will Power, Townsend Bell & Mario Moraes.

Ryan Hunter Reay wrecked his car during his attempt and Bruno Junquiera spun out on his warm up lap.

Time trials were yesterday, bump day is today, you can follow it live at indycar.com, US residents can watch it live on ABC at 1 ET and ESPN 2 at 4 ET. Below is a table of the grid current as of 12:30 ET.

John's Debate! - How Do You Like Your Bumping?
Robin Miller on the Speed Report (as well as one racer) noted that this 11-11-11 format be removed and replace it with a more traditional qualifying format to remove "manufacturing drama." What would you propose for the qualifying format for the Indianapolis 500? Do you think your proposal would be considered if you've presented it to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials? Or is the qualifying format fine as is?

I like the present 11-11-11 format, but I don't like how drivers have 3 attempts to do it and how it goes from noon to 6 p.m..

Qualifying should go from 3pm to 6 pm and drivers only get 1 attempt to qualify, it would make qualifying more dramatic for those cars trying to bump their way in.

What a tough break for TK, he leads at Indy again and fails to win, Marco should know that you shouldn't be racing that hard barely halfway during the 500. I felt bad for Sarah Fisher too, she got collected in that mess.

Anyway congratulations to
Target Chip Ganassi racing and driver Scott Dixon on winning the 92nd Indy 500, becoming the 19th driver to win the Indy 500 from the pole.
