Slot 2: I had to miss Slot 1 because of work, so I went into Slot 2 liking my chances, and surprised to see
@OutlawQuadrnt here. I qualified 3rd, with the Top 10 being composed of 4 Corvettes, and 2 each of the McLaren, NSX, and SLS. A McLaren got pole and an SLS of all things qualified just ahead of me in P2 (though I never did get a full slipstream lap without catching the car in front of me). After a few laps I moved up into P2 behind the polesitting McLaren. I ran as much of the first stint as I could at Fuel Mix 2 and only put it to 1 to get back up to the bumper of the McLaren to not make it super obvious I was fuel-saving.
When we pitted on Lap 8, me and the McLaren both had the same amount of fuel left, and even though I had just enough fuel for another 8-lap stint, I elected to take on a bit in the hopes I could still catch the slipstream of the McLaren coming out of the pits, and have more fuel on the 2nd stop to jump ahead in the pits. Unfortunately I came out of the pits over 1s behind the McLaren, and now an NSX was between us. The NSX had a lousy connection (1 bar the entire race) which made pushing it difficult, in addition to it being slower down the straights than me. So I passed the NSX and he hung out behind me and refused to bump-draft me, electing to save fuel instead while I struggled to make progress on catching the McLaren in the lead. I gained a few tenths over the course of the stint, and almost made it into slipstream range when we pitted again. Somehow, in spite of the McLaren being out front the entirety of the 2nd stint with no help, and not taking any fuel on the previous stop, they still had more fuel than I did when we pitted again.
So once again we came out of the pits with me over 1s behind. I'd had the same scenario in several previous practice races (including one with
@Geauxgreddy): try to save fuel in the Corvette, have a McLaren save more than me, then have to chase the McLaren down after they gapped me in the pits due to not having to take as much fuel. The same thing happened again, and I finally caught the McLaren with 2 laps to go. On the final lap, I went for it in T1, then proceeded to understeer into the wall on exit, allowing the McLaren to re-pass me. I then tired to go around the outside of the final turn, but didn't have enough momentum to challenge, plus I ran out of fuel just before the line, so I finished 2nd, only a tenth off the McLaren and almost 3s ahead of the NSX.

I can win with ease at BMB in the Dailies, but this is now my 4th straight FIA race here with a P2 finish...
It's also my best Manufacturer's score, 2nd best FIA score ever, and the 2nd time ever I've gotten over 300 points in an FIA event, both coming at the ovals this season (not to mention tying the finishing position of
@xxPinkyKissxx as well
). While I'm slightly bummed to come up just short (again), I'm glad I actually had to work for this and beat 3 other Corvettes, 1 McLaren, and 2 NSXs on merit, and ran another McLaren close despite having to chase them down from outside their slipstream. I was worried I'd be 1 of only a few players capable of running near the front and the result would feel "cheap" as a result, especially if I didn't win. Maybe I should've done the strategy differently and not refueled on my first stop to keep up with the McLaren in the 2nd stint and be closer in the 3rd stint. Oh well, this is too good of a result to risk, especially with connection problems apparently cropping up...
