Remarkably contrasting quarterfinals today. 😮

My guess, based on what I've seen so far, would be Brazil against England or France in the final. Argentina haven't looked that impressive this WC.

Spain's penalties were so incredibly weak, with such nonchalance...just like Japan yesterday.

I am rooting for a Brazil vs England final.

Hopefully not.
I assume the same aplies to Cancelo, Leão and Neves, which would be on everyone's starting 11?

I just find it weird how this win means that 1 of the 3 players benched (obvious starters), was the problem, and the other 2 are fine. On the contrary, I think that we started very weak, with terrible 15 minutes, fortunately the Swiss lack of quality meant we didn't concede, which allowed us to gain control of the game, and then score. That start against France or Brazil, would probably start a whole different debate.

Had things gone wrong, everyone would blame Santos for benching such key players. Ramos missed a 1v1, had the game been 0-0, guess what would happen? Imagine if it was the number 7 guy missing.

It's really a shame that such a good performance, gets overshadowed by this. And nevermind Ramos, Felix was also great, probably his best performance ever for the national team.

I am of the opinion that, strategicaly, in the KO stages, Ronaldo should be on the bench. He won't last 90 minutes, let alone 120, but he can be the sort of "super sub" we never had before, when the game requires him.

Morocco 0-0 Spain (after extra time, Morocco win 3-0 on penalties)
Portugal 6-1 Switzerland

Spain had all the possession and passes completed they could want but only had one shot on target throughout the whole 120 minutes, which is their lowest ever at a World Cup. Three poor penalties from Spain with one hitting the post and two saved from Bonou.

Impressive win and performance from Portugal who breezed through, a first hat trick at this years tournament was scored by Goncalo Ramos, Pepe became the second oldest player to score at a World Cup at 39 years old, Guerriero and a fantastic strike by Rafael Leao round off the win. Akanji with the Swiss goal.

Morocco and Portugal meet in the final quarter final tie, the QF's start on Friday so there is a two-day break, the first break of the tournament.

You're looking way too much into what I said. It has nothing to do with strategy.

Ronaldo should have stopped playing a couple of years ago. His ego (and probably his manager as well) is getting in the way of him acknowledging that it's all downhill from here and that he is damaging his image and hurting the teams where he plays.

I don't care what he does in the clubs that pay him to be there, but I'll definitely say that I don't want to see him playing for the national team anymore.

Fortunately, he makes it easy for me to prove my point, with things like his behaviour when he was replaced against South Korea. And hopefully that was the tipping point for the coach as well and he'll not be playing much more in this WC (and least not in the starting lineup).

Ronaldo is rightly lauded as one of the greatest players of all time, even if he is one of his own biggest fans. However, I totally agree with @35mm insomuch as he's become a bit of a liability - not because he is not as prolific or as potent as he once undoubtedly was, but purely due to his attitude and his apparent disdain for anyone who dares to challenge his opinion of himself.

Upset of the tournament so far! I thought Brazil were dead set as the winners, and they're out in the Quarter-Finals?

Croatia have only participated as an independent nation in the World Cup since 1998.

They've qualified for 6 out of 7 World Cups, reaching 3 Semi-Finals and 1 Final (the last World Cup) so far.

And this is with a population of less than 4 million people - less than Scotland and less than half the population of London.

An incredible record.

Once it went to PK, I sort of had a feeling Brazil would be eliminated. I know that Croatia is just too good there and the fact that Brazil missed its first was the dagger.

It's a great achievement but they've been absolutely dire to watch. I really hope they don't make the final again.

I'm fine with the Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal or Morocco winning the World Cup. They have never won it before and it's time for a new country to win it.

Brazil has had one decent half of football in the entire tournament. They laboured to 2-0 and 1-0 wins, lost 1-0 to Cameroon, and - although it didn't matter - lost the second half to South Korea.

I'm just amazed they lasted this long, although it's also a surprise it was Extra Time Croatia that beat them.

Also Nasser al-Khater, chief executive of the Qatar World Cup would just like to say that falling to your death repairing an event resort car park's lighting is "a natural part of life". Which I guess it is for indentured migrant workers in that human rights vacuum.

All you need to do is add a window and the worker would be in Russia.

Superb work from Messi to create the first goal in tonight's game.

His work ethic, attitude, determination, intelligence and legendary skill is still as evident today as it ever was.

Certain statistical rivals take note...

That's one half more than Croatia have had.

I'd rather the best footballing team one than a team who hasn't won it winning it just because they haven't. Of those teams Portugal have been the most entertaining watch, Morocco the most surprising. Netherlands and Croatia have been deathly boring to watch.

Absolute scenes in the Netherlands Argentina game. Netherlands have equalised in the 110th minute of normal time. Unbelievable.

Well, the Argentina v. Netherlands game just got a whole lot more interesting.
