The US squad is so poorly coached. They could've easily gotten an insurance goal but they played defense for the entire second half. And even then Iran had a bunch of opportunities.
They'll need to do better to advance further, that's for sure.

Ecuador 1-2 Senegal
Netherlands 2-0 Qatar
Wales 0-3 England
Iran 0-1 USA

Ismaila Sarr penalty for Senegal at the end of the first half cancelled out by Caicedo then Koulibaly got the eventual winner to put Senegal through as runners-up, Netherlands predictably winning against Qatar with Gakpo and De Jong scoring, Netherlands top the group.

England top group B after a convincing win, a goalless first half but Foden and two from Rashford gave England the win, Pulisic with the USA goal who finish as runners-up.

Qatar and Wales both finish the tournament with one point and just one goal, you would maybe expect it from Qatar but Wales have been pretty disappointing, it's been fantastic to see them at a World Cup but they have been well below par, and it could be another long time till they qualify for another major tournament.

As expected, Mexico did nothing against Argentina.

Now, we just need to score like a trillion goals in our game vs. Saudi Arabia and pray there is a winner in the Argentina vs. Poland.

It's over. This is the worst Mexico squad of the century, period. But nothing is gonna change because we are guaranteed a spot in the 2026 WC. Saldy, futbol in Mexico is going to stay screwed for many... many more years.

I dont understand why there isn't more blowouts in the world cup.

And how is a scrub team like USA taking England, a soccer country, to a a draw?

It just makes the whole thing seem like a tossup

The US team is far from a scrub team. Berhalter isn't a very good coach and makes terrible decisions, but the team isn't lacking for talent at all.

They should've beat Wales, but a one stupid decision resulted in a penalty and Berhalter played nothing but defense in the second half. They could've beat England too but couldn't finish opportunities, still holding one of the tournament's top teams to a 0-0 draw is a good result.

The US squad has 9 players who play their club football at British teams, they play against the England squad all the time. Their tactics and playing style isn't going to be unknown to them.

0-0 in both afternoon games so far, France and Australia going through as it stands, Denmark need to beat Australia to progress, France have effectively put they're third team out against Tunisia.

Man, Szczęsny is really holding his own against a vastly superior Argentina squad. I do hope Poland can hold on though, I'd like to see them advance and I really hope it doesn't come down to drawing lots because that's not the way anyone should go home.

Looks like Mexico just got their hearts broken. Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina and now they score a goal in stoppage time to allow Poland advancing.

Australia 1-0 Denmark
Tunisia 1-0 France
Poland 0-2 Argentina
Saudi Arabia 1-2 Mexico

Tunisia picked up a famous win over a much-changed France but sadly still went out, Khazri with their goal and its Australia who join France in the last 16 as runners-up after they beat a below-par Denmark, Leckie with the Aussies goal

MacAllister and Julien Alvarez got Argentina's goal whilst Messi had a penalty saved by Szczesny which shouldn't have been given in the first place, Luis Chavez scored a great free kick for Mexico but they go out on goal difference with Poland going through as runners-up, at one point Poland were going through and fair play by having fewer yellow cards than Mexico, Saudi Arabia also out but they will always have that win over Argentina.

Argentina play Australia and France play Poland in the last 16.

The FFF (French Football Federation) filled a complaint to Fifa following the joke at the end.
The referee blew the end of the game at 1-1, french TV even sent the advertisements on a draw result, but the VAR has then been used illegally to cancel a goal, and the match restarted.

It could be worse, you could be Iranian:
I feel for the Iranian players, who did very well in the tournament despite their early exit, as they all certainly face severe punishment for their brave protest in their first game.

Many Iranian supporters also face life-changing consequences for supporting their team in the WC, thanks in part to the complicity of the Qatari authorities and tournament organisers. So much for keeping politics out of football - meanwhile, showing your hair, honking a car horn, refusing to sing or showing any solidarity for murdered young women could well mean death or a very long prisoner sentence.

Shame on those who refuse to call this out.

Yo there was a point where both Spain and Germany were going out!

But in the end it was Japan 2-1 Spain and Costa Rica 2-4 Germany, meaning Japan go through as Group winners along with Spain. Germany out again in the groups!

Germany 4 - Costa Rica 2
Japan 2 - Spain 1
Japan and Spain both advance as Germany loses tiebreaker on differentials with Spain.

Japan plays Croatia on Monday.

Morocco plays Spain on Tuesday.

Bit sad but that is how it went. At least they won today and came back. But the mistake(s) was (were) made in the first game vs. Japan and they had it in their own hands back then and today.

What a night it has been, at one point both Spain and Germany were going out, Japan beat both Spain and Germany but somehow lost to Costa Rica.

With Belgium going out too this has to be up there as one of the most chaotic days in World Cup history.

Amazing couple of days of football. The group format really seems to be working in terms of producing games that have interest beyond the simple result in each game. Unfortunately ... it seems that FIFA will be abandoning this format for the next WC, instead having opening groups of 3 teams in the rift round ... and 48 countries represented in total. This doesn't seem like a good concept - I'm sure put in place to introduce more international representation and therefore MORE MONEY!

I started watching the Japan game against Spain just before Japan scored so lucky timing. Their second goal looked out but thought you never know with VAR and it was given. I wonder if VAR will apologise as it looks out to me. I think if it had been goal-line technology, it would have shown to be clearly out but with a human using tools probably incorrectly, choosing the frame before it goes out can make it look in. It was when the player's boot was furthest past the ball, when the ball looked cleary out which some photos show and it shows as looking in when initial contact looked to be made which was a few frames beforehand when boot was right alongside the ball. So many goals would not have been given as going over the line if that is deemed as on the line by a human judging. Hopefully FIFA shows the evidence...

Happy that Japan made it through though, was rooting for them being the underdogs.

They really need to improve the technology to be more accurate and less human error prone like they have done with goal-line technology as so many correct decisions by officials in live play have been overturned which is the opposite effect of what VAR was brought in to achieve. I suppose Roy Carroll did make a legitimate save, it's the angles and when you decide to check when the ball is ahead of the line with the benefit of having a second look. :D

Croatia - Belgium was great match despite no goals, many opportunities from both sides, big chances and misses...
It showed why they are actual 2nd vs 3rd team.

Now knockout phase.
I think both Croatia and Spain are more happy with how it happened and not playing one vs other.

Of course, this is football and no underestimating no one.
This tournament showed that many times...

Looking forward to next step, which is Japan.

Should be 12 Groups of 4 not 16 groups of 3. Or just double it to 64. Doing 48 is a terrible idea.

South Korea qualify for the Last 16 after a nigh on perfect breakaway goal in stoppage time to beat Portugal, who had already quailifed.

They had to wait, however, as one more goal for Uruguay in the other game, or two goals for Ghana, in the 8 minutes of added time in that game would have seen SK knocked out, but neither team could manage to score what they needed to overhaul South Korea.

Uruguay were controversially denied a penalty in stoppage time and it didn't even go to VAR, even though replays show it was almost certainly a deserved penalty.

Unlucky for Uruguay, very well done to SK.
