BTK
Some pretty sweet racing last night, first race was a little rough, but I'm not going too cry over it. Laguna was great for me, Osprey and I were in a great dogfight last lap. But turns out, he didn't even see my car on track. Which caused too accidentally punt me last corner, but it's not a big deal.

yeah, that was really odd last night. I could only see 5 cars on the track on Laguna. I was ahead of "#2" (on my screen) by 7 or 8 seconds so I took it easier on the final laps.

I think I had the issue on other tracks before that too although I could see more than 5. I apologize if I hit anyone but I didn't see you.. literally.

Once I left the room and came back it was back to normal I think.

I wonder if using a fixed host would work better. Should I try that some night? I guess it only takes one person with a slow connection to mess things up. Watching the replays some cars are totally bugging out.

that could avoid some problems but i doubt it will works with a full lobbie

I might be able to run as a fixed host sometimes but I've been busy lately. I should have enough bandwidth for a good number of people (around 40mbit/s down and 35mbit/s up) and my ps3 is hard to my router, rather than wifi.

Yes, it should be clean. I have said it on numerous occasions that people need to adjust their braking points entering turn 1 on this track. You can't draft someone into the turn and expect to use their same braking point. The same goes for the bus stop. Also leave a little room for lag. You don't have to ride their bumper through the turn.

I didn't watch the entire race, but I did see this mishap. You appeared to be holding the center of the track so I stayed low. Then you dropped down right in front of me. Given that my car doesn't change course, i'd say the incident is on you...or you can blame lag.

His car is already beat up pretty bad there. Watch him from the lead up to entering the bus stop on lap 1 around to turn 4 or 5 on lap 2.

That may be what he was referring to.

I am hoping that all of the connection and lag issues that we have been experiencing over the past week will be resolved after tonight's update. Well maybe not all of the issues but hopefully they improve enough that it is no longer frustrating to race against others. Last night at Monza going into Turn 1 on the first lap I had Osprey drive right into my passenger door and then through me like I was nonexistent. I know it was probably because he didn't see me on the track but it is so very frustrating because I could definitely feel him on the track. Also, the lag experienced when you see a car "surging" down the straight makes it terribly difficult to do pretty much everything that has to do with racing.

It's very difficult to solve lag on the software side when there's a such a huge variation in connection quality and distance from the host. It's just something that's inherent in online games that don't use dedicated servers.

Right on. But regardless, that's all I want.

Lap 1 bus stop... BTK bumps him hard right before the brake zone. Could have been lag, or could have been ill timed by BTK. I suspect the later since he's done it to me occasionally.

After the bus stop... Some sort of lag going on with osprey and Nic as they drop down on the track and almost cause a pileup.

Lap 2 turn 1...BTK does another bump way too late. He gets loose braking and comes inside to avoid. Midway through turn 1 he lifts off to let Dude recover but BTK is bumped from behind by Osprey causing him to hit Dude again.

After that, Dude is all over the place trying to re-enter the track and he runs wide on the next turn by himself...most likely in frustration.

Exiting the infield, I gave him a tap as he was very late getting on the throttle. That actually helped him though. Shortly after, the incident I recorded happened.

So in conclusion...

BTK, you need to do a better job with bump drafting. Its OK do do it early and midway down the straight but if you are approaching a brake zone you need to lift off. Giving someone a boost of speed just before they are going to brake doesn't help anyone. Bump drafting only works if there is actually track left to run at a higher speed.

Everyone else, please leave some tire and brakes left in turn 1 to avoid ping ponging each other through the turn. You have to brake much earlier when following cars into the turn than you do when you are running your own hot laps...especially when you are utilizing the draft down the straight.

This is why I typically boot people from other countries (aside from US/canada). They may be great drivers, but their presence in the room ruins the experience for other drivers.

Yes, all that at the beginning. Overall, I think DRC is an awful track for anything but racecars on slicks. The braking zones aren't marked or defined in any way, and what's worse... even after you learn your points YOU CAN'T SEE THEM if there's anyone in front of you because their name takes up the whole screen. :grumpy:

He definately turned into you, but he may not have been checking his mirrors or if he did you were in his blind spot?? Perhaps he was blocking...which would make sense on the last lap after the bus stop, but not here.

👍👍👍👍

Not to mention PD used the long bus stop chicane which is no longer in service instead of the shorter, proper bus stop. I know there is lag time between when a course is modeled and ready for use in a game and when it actually hits the shelf but they haven't used the longer chicane since 2005 or 2006. In fact, the longer chicane doesn't even exist anymore, it's been filled in with grass for a few years now.

On Daytona I base my braking points half on speed and half on visuals.

We had a 50 lap race there on sport softs with only a few mishaps, mostly caused by people staying out too long on their tires.

It wouldn't be as bad if you could see. The name blocking the track thing is really unforgivable (like MANY of PD's decisions in this game) and is especially troublesome entering the bus stop. I literally can't see ANYTHING if there is someone ahead of me.

That's all part of racing. Learning to follow someone into the bus stop is not something that A-spec or the license tests will teach you. You also aren't going to have much success using a button that has no pressure sensitivity for braking. When I am approaching the bus stop behind someone, I usually lift off the gas and make sure I am not going any faster than them. I anticipate their brake zone with light braking and I increase pressure when they finally do brake. I ease off the brakes if they start to pull away. This exactly what you would do exiting the highway IRL. Despite taking an earlier braking point, you can still maintain pace...and as long as you are within a few car lengths, you'll be able to draft on the exit and make your pass afterward.

When ahead of someone entering the bus stop, you can sacrifice a 10th or 2 to prevent an accident by easing into the brakes before hitting them hard. Even with ABS I find cars scrub speed off a little more efficiently with partial brake. In any case, make sure you hit your apexes and the other driver won't be able to get around you. For the most part, hitting the apexes and getting proper exit speeds is always going to be faster than divebombing a turn and hoping you have enough tire to hold it. We race with tire wear on so each lap your brake zone will be a little different.

+1 to everything Chuyler said.

It also doesn't help that most brake pedals with wheels just plain suck.

With my CSPs brake I've got it so I can use ABS on 0 if I feel like it and not have a problem. The pedals throw is about 1" and takes a lot of force (I tried to get it around where a serious race car would be) to get full braking, which I rarely use. I have weights behind my chair because it was moving backwards

It just isn't likely to get that precise with most pedals, and impossible with a DS3.

I've got bungie cords around my DFGT pedals to provide a little more feedback. It helps, but a proper rig just for precise braking would be ideal. One of these days I'll get a high end wheel but I think I do OK with the DFGT. The fact that I occasionally lose to DS3 drivers means I've got quite a bit to learn when it comes to tuning.

BTW, I cannot host tonight. Someone volunteer and open the room. Last time we did this we ended up turning off penalties (to prevent ghost passes) and turning on boost (to promote some fender rubbing).

I think tonight is still up in the air because GT5s online is going down for maintenance from 10-11pm EST.

I say we try to get in as much as we can in the next hour. I can host, or maybe you max.

EDIT: on second thought, maybe we should just postpone it to another night.

So much for racing tonight. I spent the evening playing with the Delta for Thursdays race. I tried messing with the tranny but hitting a turn just right appears to be more important than gear ratios. I could run similar lap times with super tall gears compared to close ratios.

Hey guys, I'm interested in some 450PP street car stuff, is it alright if I join you all sometime?

Sure, read through the first post for rules and guidelines and check back each night to see what the theme is. I update the first post with the new themes weekly. Tonight esoxhntr (PSN: osprey73) is hosting and they will be running Nurburgring all night. I'm not sure if there is a specific theme for car selection.

I'm not sure, but I think I saw someone post that the saving during championships doesn't allow you to do anything else in between the races. Your only option when turning the console back on is completing the championship or quitting. (Like GT2? used to be.)

I could be wrong. (And hope I am.)

Bummer. I'll have to try it out. I'm still pumped about the ability to purchase parts w/o going to the tuning shop.

Also, it looks like they made changes to the ballast. Anyone see what that looks like yet? The article says you can see the distribution changes...does that mean you can see how much weight is on each axle, or does it just mean the block moves from front to rear as you change the settings.

I think the percentage is visible. 50/50, 46/54, etc. (Which would technically give the same information as listing the actual axle weights.)

I'm gonna assume they changed it because there wasn't really any way to know if the slider was backwards or not.

For some reason a lot of things seem to get reversed in the programming of this game. I bet they have a shoddy translation specialist.
