This night, at the rate P1s were having problems, I suggested in our virtual team's Whatsapp group that P2 might have won the overall classification. Just need something to happen on the #1... Porsche still win P1 class, but the overall will be won by a P2...

Nope 'cos the #2 will take 2nd overall.

Only just noticed that it's actually now Porsche leading GTE Pro as well. Since everyone here judges GTE's solely on sound, I'll go out and say the Porsche sounds the best of them. Have you heard it from onboard?! That thing screams like it should. So I wouldn't mind that winning its class.

Is Porsche streaming it's onboards anywhere? The part of me that's hoping we see a historic anomaly like a P2 car winning, I wanna keep an ear on the Porsche radio lol.

So if the leading Porsche was to come unstuck with say, an hour left in the race, and has to stay in the garage, would they still win the race due to the most laps being completed?

Well the RLM guys were just discussing this situation, and from what I could gather, whilst the #1 could stay in the pits for some time, it would need to finish the final lap to be classified and eligible for the win/finish, regardless of how far back 2nd is. At least, that's how I understand it anyway...

No, the car could stop on the last lap but if it doesn't cross the line after the clock hits zero it is disqualified.

To add to what others have said it would need to cross the line after the flag to be classified but the final lap would also need to be 15 minutes or less (it was 6 minutes last year).

It's what happened to the Toyota last year, since it didn't finish the last lap, in a certain time frame, it got disqualified.

My buffering laptop screen suggests Nick Tandy is driving with his eyes closed. If he goes about things like that then I don't think the Porsche will make it.

Ahh yes, that was the other part of it, the #1 would need finish the lap, after the flag dropped and under the minimum time of 15mins, as you say.
The RLM guys were saying how the original 6 min minimum lap time was brought in to stop the leader doing an excessively slow final lap, to wave at the crowd and what not (brought in when Audi dominated with vast leads over the rest).

However, as @Silent Drifter mentioned, the Toyota was caught out by this minimum lap time, for a completely different reason to what I said above, so the minimum lap time was changed to 15mins this year, to factor in any issues such as Toyota's heart-breaking finish last year.

I believe the time frame is 5 minutes. Idk if that's 5 minutes from when the leader finished or in last lap time?

The rules have been changed since last year. It used to be that you had to complete your last lap within 6 minutes of starting it, in order to prevent people (the Audis basically) from treating the final lap as a slow lap of honour whilst other cars were still racing. After the unintended consequences of last year's Toyota being unclassified, now if you take more than 6 minutes to complete your last lap you get a 1 lap penalty for every extra minute - so a 7 minute lap would give a 1 lap penalty, an 8 minute lap a 2 lap penalty, etc. The Toyota last year would have been classified 3rd overall under such as system.

You still have to complete the final lap though, as Miguel Molina found at Silverstone this year when a last-lap crash got his GTE-Am Ferrari stuck in the gravel and was classified as a DNF after running 2nd, whilst the Gulf Racing Porsche that was 23 laps behind the Am winner was scored as a classified finisher in 4th.

Edit: As Micheln Man said.

It's the individual cars final lap time, the limit is 15 minutes, last year it was 6 which is why the Toyota was excluded. I remember Porsche a few years ago (maybe 2014) sat in the garage for about an hour before coming out to take the flag, they must've done 2 laps.

I don't think this race is over yet, last night we saw all the hybrids struggling with electrics in the heat, today is going to be even warmer with tired cars and drivers.

Probably good that rule changes. Imagine if it was raining like crazy, some of the slower cars could've been DQ'd even if healthy. Rain hasn't really effected Le Mans since idk when.

I have not slept yet, but there might be a 40 minute power nap in my future...

I think you're not alone there, it's 9:05am here, I haven't slept yet, but this is the 1st point I've felt properly weary all race, think a brief 30-60min power-nap is on the cards.

I think I may have been in 2014, because I believe the Toyota crashed out in the rain, by pushing too hard. Also probably the first Le Mans I couldn't watch since I was out of the country at the time.

Right, with the #3 Audi and the Sam Bird Ferrari. It's got slick a few times but I can't remember the last proper wet stint.

Gonna keep an alarm set next to me head to catch me just in case lol.

#2 Porsche is 7th overall, clawing its way back, about three laps down on the Jackie Chan DC Racing LMP2, in 2nd overall.
