I am curious about how that part about attacking electric vehicles is going to go down with Musk. I've rarely ever seen that be a subject of discussion despite of how much of a fundamental point of contention it is between Musk and Trump/Trump's base.
I don't really know about the ins and outs of Musk's $54b share payments that's been in the courts recently, but maybe its his way of getting his value out of Tesla before that share value starts to plumet?

The bitch embodies cronyism.

The thing about tariffs is that while taxes can be gamed, the former is primed for gaming. We saw that the first time around with Trump's tariffs. In the gaming of tariffs, lobbying entities avoid much of the detriment associated with them while those entities' competition takes the hit.

I don't expect a ban on EVs. I don't think Trump has the appetite for it beyond pandering to the idiot base. I also don't think conservatives in the legislative and judicial branches have the appetite to back such a ban. A ban couldn't really be gamed without being super obvious either. What I expect is lessening or elimination of governmental benefit, and any gaming of tariffs would certainly soften the blow from that.

Smoot-Hawley is really too funny a name for something so awful. Nationalism, protectionism and isolationism during the depression to drive up costs on needed goods for people who already can't afford them. Why are Republicans so wont to hurt people?

Just because someone is on the autism spectrum doesn't mean we should assume anything about them. There are plenty of people on the spectrum who are perfectly capable of having reasonable discussions and there are plenty of people who aren't on the spectrum who can't. We shouldn't assume someone is autistic, nor should we assume they need to be treated with kid gloves.
ASD isn't a free pass and it is patronising to treat people with it like it is. And, as others have mentioned, you don't assume.
Indeed.

I am on the spectrum myself, but not once have I used it as a free pass card on the forum, and I have a history of making controversial/uncalled for posts. The problem with being autistic is that, as Joey said, some people who are on the spectrum have less difficulty than others.

And when it comes to voting, I don't vote, since I wouldn't know who to vote for and have no political awareness whatsoever.

Jesus, just line the homeless up against a wall and shoot them. It'd be more humane than sending them out to freeze to death.
Many places have passed laws that the homeless can't sleep out in public without facing a fine, either. So, you're seeing a glimpse of a desired outcome; no shelters allowed, can't afford the fine when caught sleeping outside b/c the shelters are gone, so off to jail for prison labor.

So... I just want to double-check on this one...

"47" will be creating a new department for investigating ways to make the federal government more efficient and less fiscally wasteful.

It'll have two people heading it up (both of whom, incidentally, are executives at companies with significant federal funding through government contracts).

And there's already a department for that, called the Government Accountability Office (GOA).

Add in that Musk has been seen at 'Trump-Land Florida' almost everyday since the election, and has apparently been advising on picks for positions and in the room for numerous calls with various world leaders.

Sure looks like someone wants to lead from behind he curtain and get around the 'natural born' requirement while Trump spends the day venting in front of the TV.

I don’t understand why they call it “the Manhattan project of our time”? To me it implies that it will be extremely expensive.
Oh great. They're going to bomb New York or Chicago aren't they?

I am really just hoping NOAA survives this stupidity expedition.
The CDC did not survive particularly well from the previous Trump admin. I think NOAA will be specifically targeted for misinformation, so I very much doubt it "survives" with any sort of credibility intact. In fact, when the government is run by known liars and cheats, it's unlikely that there will be many corners of the US government that survive with any sort of credibility intact - which leads to general societal failure.

========================================

I think a bigger problem is electing a criminal to the whitehouse and freeing him from accountability. The rule of law in the US has basically been fully exposed as failed. There are all kinds of social implications of this, and all of them are bad. I'm not sure how it gets repaired either. A different administration won't magically make the law more principled, because our history now includes high profile lawlessness.

You simply cannot expect people to give a rat's behind about the law when you elect a president who doesn't.

Project 2025 has around 4 pages on gutting it and pushing weather forecasting into private hands.

I hope you folks have something we can rely on. Increasingly, Europe is what we're going to rely on for scientific information about all subjects Trump doesn't like - including climate change and public health. I don't know what country is ready to hire our climate scientists as they resign, but someone should be gearing up for that effort. I wonder if they can wrestle control our climate research satellites away from Trump, probably not.

Is there a chance the Air Force takes this over on grounds of needing the information to protect their assets spread throughout the country?

Apropos of the descent of America, we have a new village being built in our village (yeah) right now, so if you want to move here there'll be room :D New-builds will be roomier but flimsier and boringer, but there'll be people moving out of the proper houses in the existing village too. We could get the kids together after many, many years
