Why would you want to be America's dictator? I'd rather be Cuba's dictator. Much easier to manage, as history has shown.

Policies I would enact if I were America's dictator:

1. End the Cuban embargo.
2. Make Puerto Rico a State.
3. Cut all ties with Israel.
4. Work closely with Canada to dominate oil production and demolish the Middle East's oil economy.
5. Legalize pot at the national level.
6. Legalize all weapons except things that blow up. Those require a license.
7. Ban police from using military surplus equipment. They can only use what's available on the market like everyone else.
8. Close at least half of our international military bases and station those soldiers in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska and elsewhere in the US.
9. Stategically place a flag on Mars.

And probably some other things.

Wishlists are great, but when reality strikes it will probably look more like this:

1. Restrict the free media.
2. Restrict access and use of the internet.
3. Work closely with North Korea and Iran against the liberal democracies of the world.
4. Build an iron curtain at the border to Canada to prevent the young and well-educated work force from emigrating and leaving your economy stuck to cope with the ill-equipped and the elderly.
5. Restrict the influence of religious leaders.
6. Invest in a new national security agency to monitor and neutralise opposition.
7. Form units of paramilitary troops to assist the police with law enforcement.
8. Close at least half of your international military base and station those soldiers in the US - simply because you need to fight those rebel groups that pops up all over the country.
9. Strategically place a flag on Mars (yeah, you can have that. Being a dictator shouldn't be all misery ;))

So Ted Cruz is the first Republican to announce his intention to run for President in 2016: http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/23/politics/ted-cruz-2016-announcement/

The Republicans are off to a great start to their presidential campaigns by having one of the most controversial politicians run for president. Christie, please hurry up and run already so that you can balance out Cruz (referring to leadership qualities, not actually balancing the ticket). Why on earth would the Republicans be ok with Cruz running when he is probably one of the worst candidates out there since the next president is almost guaranteed to be a Republican?

I can't wait for the campaigns and debates to start. That really brings out the stupid ideas and quotes.

Cruz is greatly feared by other Republicans because of his bedrock support amongst the Tea Party and Christians, and perhaps even more so for his razor-sharp intellect and debating skills. IMO, he and most other candidates of both parties would be a colossal disaster for the country. The only ones of positive interest to me are Jim Webb and Elizabeth Warren on the Democratic side, and Rand Paul on the Republican side.

Joe Biden 4 year transition.

"Okay bicameral houses, you guys do your stuff and I'll smoke these cigars in the Oval office. PM me when it's 2020."
I hope you're right, in that domestic gridlock would be a good outcome. On the other hand, Joe has his hands drenched in bloody foreign policy.

If anyone invades, smilin' Joe will just show up on the front lines and shoot a 12 gauge into the air.

I didn't know too much about Cruz until he made the announcement, the highlights of which were broadcast down here. I got the same impression as you - that he's dangerous. One line in particular from the speech stuck in my mind: the conservative ideology rising up to determine the future (or words to the same effect). We currently have just that problem - a government that only governs for the conservative population, or the people who voted for them. Politicians seem to forget that, if elected, they represent everyone, and not just the majority who voted for them. Going by Cruz's speech, I can see him making the same mistake and playing to the power base - the people who are easily satisfied and will tell him what he wants to hear - and ignore everyone else.

And liberal/socialist governments only governing for the liberal/socialist population isn't a problem?

I agree with... parts of that. Here's what I would do:

1. Repeal the Affordable Care Act.
2. Overhaul immigration policies to make immigration easier, work to document illegal immigrants so that they may stay in the country.
3. Move funding to the Department of Transportation to fix infrastructure.
4. Abolish speed limits in the left lane of interstates, establish minimum speed limit of 80 mph in the left lane in all states.
5. Build the Keystone Pipeline, encourage oil production.
6. Disable all nuclear weapons except for 30 ICBM's.
7. Work to improve relations with Russia and China.
8. Abolish the death penalty.

Good lord man, do you want to kill everybody? I feel like first we should actually teach people how to drive first. Pilot here - I know for a fact that the vast majority of drivers have no idea what they're doing at any given moment.

True that. During my commute this morning I was stuck on a four-lane road behind two dump trucks driving side-by-side going 40 mph in a 55 zone.

Ted Cruz's firebrand pastor of a father has called for atheists and secularists to be rounded up into concentration camps (there's really no better term for it).

EDIT: TIL Newslo is a parody site.

Honestly, I had never heard of Newslo before seeing that link. Going on previous comments by Cruz Sr, I honestly believed it and just copied and pasted the link from another forum which had the story fully posted, so I didn't actually need to click the link to read it.

 This is the first time I've looked directly at the site also but I remember seeing another story on another board just as you have. Many posts below cried foul.

Using their "show facts" button on the site revealed they are presenting this portion as fact and the rest fiction.

Rafael Cruz, father of Texas Senator and Tea-Party favorite Ted Cruz, spoke recently against atheism and secular humanism at a gathering of an Oklahoma Second Amendment advocacy group. He claimed that the belief systems are two of the main ills facing our society, that they lead to sexual perversion, sexual abuse, and the complete loss of hope.

“If there is no God, then we are ruled by our instincts,” he said. “Of course, this leads us, when there are no moral absolutes, leads us to sexual immorality, leads us to sexual abuse, leads us to perversion and, of course, no hope. No hope!”

In the past, Cruz, an evangelical preacher and avowed creationist, has claimed that God endorses the Death Penalty, that evolution is a communist trick aimed at converting people to atheism, that legalizing gay marriage will lead to preachers being arrested for hate speech just for reading the Bible, and that President Obama is a tyrant who needs to go back to Kenya.

There's a certain humour that we've had 8+ years of braindead morons going on about Obama being from Kenya and the first Republican to run was actually born in Calgary. And there's no question, he was absolutely 100% born in Canada
If Cruz is born in any American embassy, that is considered American soil in regards to International law.
