May the driver rest in peace.

The run-off area after the hill is clearly insufficient. It's too narrow for the speed.

Such sad and tragic news today, and we must remember that many more people all around the world lose their lives in road accidents every day too.
RIP.
I feel for all of those with close ties to these unfortunate people. :(

From what I have seen, pieced together.

Alesi dropped it mid Eau Rouge and hit Hubert 2 places below him, Alesi's rear wing is gone before it has finished.
Hubert then hit the wall at the top and slid along.
Correa then goes wide and smashes into him.

Problem was mainly that the wall turns back towards the circuit at the end. and thus forced Hubert into the firing line.

Well you said it's too narrow, so the obvious conclusion would be "if it was less narrow". No worries

A really touching picture from a French motorsport cartoonist by the name of Audran.

Was this caused by the runoff ending and then diagonally channelling towards the track or did it all happen before any wall was hit, the video I saw basically just showed the aftermath.

The reality is that his car spun back into high speed traffic. The car that collided with him could have his hit car anywhere, but appears to have hit nose-to-driver cell. It's essentially the worst possible thing. We've seen numerous non-fatal accidents of similar style at the same place in a variety of races.

Unsure if it's the right place to say this but Spa has to change, i've seen that exact incident happen far too many times, in multiple different Formula, Prototypes, Sportscars. The exit run off after Eau Rouge-Raidillon isn't large enough and the tyre barrier only spits cars back out onto the track or very close to it on a section where drivers are 150+ mph. It was only a matter of time till this kind of tragedy would happen with a driver too close behind to be able to react and the car involved rebounding at the wrong angle and I never want to see it again. RIP Antoine

They can’t make it any bigger, because there’s a ravine on the other side of the barriers

It's not a striaght drop or anything and they can add land there to make it work. Would also help a lot with the silly pit exit at the top onto the racing line.

What about sand in the run off area? Would help slow cars from returning to the track.

They should also get rid of that tire wall and replace it with a SAFER barrier. I don't understand why SAFER barrier systems have not become more popular outside of NASCAR...

Indeed! Or gravel.

Hard to just move on, but I guess that is racing. For Charles after Jules and now Anthoine, I really hope he can win this race, because seeing him this morning was hard to watch.

That was Correa's car, the one that was upside-down.

No, it was Hubert's car, the pink one. You can see his exposed body where there normally should be a sidepod and monocoque.

Correa's nose is gone but the monocoque is still intact. Exactly as it should be.

May he rest in peace. Terrible accident.

I actually thought that if this corner still would have had the kittylitter it'll probably saved his life. Those run off areas in those corners are very dangerous since high speed is kept.

I saw the accident and it left me pretty disgusted. Terrible a young life had to end this way :(

This is actually a valid point. Perhaps it is better to bring back the gravel traps, as these cars can protect the drivers a lot more when rolling than when another car crashes into it.

Who builds those F2 chassis?
The Dallara Indy car chassis has over 1" thickness in the tub wall, and I doubt it would have come apart like what is seen here.

It would not have been so bad if the fellow who was speeding through the accident scene out in the runoff area had not been going so fast.

Just saw the accident. That'll cast a shadow on the weekend for sure. I often remark how fortunate we are with the safety of motorsports nowdays. We can watch what "look" like horrendous impacts and I'm often quite sure the driver is okay (even if injured - ankles, pelvis, etc.). Watching that particularly impact though, a different story. I've no idea who Antoine Hubert is, but it's sad to see someone young taken like that. I feel almost worse for the driver who survived the crash - my assumption is that the killed driver was in the first car that spun back onto the track? Always a terrible time for the survivor of a crash like that. Sad day for motorsport.
It was shocking to me that this would happen at this current version of Formula 2. My condolences goes out to the family of Anthoine Hubert. May he rest in peace.

Formula 2 has usually been about overpowered F3 cars. My boyhood hero Jim Clark died in one of these at Hockenheim.
