Just been reading an article on the house that he kept them in. I'm amazed that you can buy a house, even in Cleveland, on four floors with four bedrooms for the equivalent of £23,000. Even in the roughest parts of the city i live in, which has some of the lowest house prices in the country, you can't buy a bed-sit in need of total renovation for under £30,000. Slightly irrelevant i know, but it just stood out.

Have you been to Cleveland?...lol. You can buy homes in Detroit for $100 or less but I doubt you'd want to live in those neighbourhoods.

From cnn.com

According to an initial incident report obtained by CNN, Knight said she became pregnant at least five times during her captivity in Castro's 1,400-square-foot home.

In conversations with police immediately after she was freed, she said that when Castro learned she was pregnant, he would "make her abort the baby," according to the document.

Knight "stated that he starved her for at least 2 weeks, then he repeatedly punched her in the stomach until she miscarried," the initial police report states.

The most messed up part about this story is the kidnapper actually hung out with the parents all of these years comforting them. Then handing out flyers for the missing kids and attending the events where cops had a call and would dig up areas looking for the bodies. He was even really good friends with one of the girls fathers. Took the neighbor kids for rides on his bike, sang in bands, and drove a school bus. It is so beyond messed up what this guy did to the girls and their families. I hope he truly gets "prison justice". They are going to destroy him in there. I will be shocked if he survives a full sentence.

I'd buy this guy a Big Mac combo meal deal every day for a solid year.

It's awesome to hear that the women got out of this. Although it makes you wonder how mentally scarred these women will be for the rest of their life. 10 years of this bullcrap is not something you can just erase away from your mind overnight. I sincerely hope that they can find the best that the best can offer for finding them help to get over this.

Absolutely sickening.

While that's infuriating, there's really no way to determine exactly how many times he raped them. They can't just charge him with some arbitrarily high rape count.

No, but it shouldn't be hard to come up with some number that can stand up in court, based on corroborated testimony or some such. I guess we'll see how this pans out as police assemble more of the what, when, where.

That is truly disgusting.

Hard to argue with any of that. 👍

For those who are wondering about why Castro may face the Death Penalty, here are a few facts about the state and abortion(source: Guttmacher Institute)

In 2008, 6.4 million of the 62 women of reproductive age(15-44) in the US were with child. Of that, 66% of the pregnancies resulted in live births, 19% ended up being aborted, and 15% were miscarriages.

In Ohio, 215,500 of the 2,290,946 women of reproductive age became pregnant in 2008. 69% of these pregnancies resulted in live births and 16% in induced abortions.

In 2008, 1.2 million American women obtained abortions, producing a rate of 19.6 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age. The rate is virtually unchanged from 2005, when the abortion rate was 19.4 abortions per 1,000 women 15-44.

In 2008, 33,550 women obtained abortions in Ohio, producing a rate of 14.7 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age. Some of these women were from other states, and some Ohio residents had abortions in other states, so this rate may not reflect the abortion rate of state residents. The rate decreased 1% since 2005, when it was 14.9 abortions per 1,000 women 15-44. Abortions in Ohio represent 2.8% of all abortions in the United States.

Having said all of that, here are the restrictions to abortion in Ohio:

- A woman must receive state-directed counseling that includes information designed to discourage her from having an abortion and then wait 24 hours before the procedure is provided. Counseling must be provided in person and must take place before the waiting period begins, thereby necessitating two separate trips to the facility.

- Health plans that will be offered in the state’s health exchange that will be established under the federal health care reform law can only cover abortion in cases when the woman's life is endangered, rape or incest.

- Abortion is covered in insurance policies for public employees only in cases of life endangerment, rape or incest.

- Medication abortion must be provided using the FDA protocol, thereby preventing the use of a more common, simpler evidence-based regimen.

- The parent of a minor must consent before an abortion is provided.

- Public funding is available for abortion only in cases of life endangerment, rape or incest.

Castro did none of these things while he was raping those three women, including going to the abortion doctor! Now I haven't read the incident report, and I, to be honest, don't want to, but if Knight is complaining about five miscarriages by way of starvation and assault, then that is murder because Castro didn't go through the proper procedures in getting that baby aborted.

I saw the funniest/most awkward interview with Charles Ramsey on Fox News the other night. Now it seems everyone is trying to throw him under the bus.

The media seems to be giving credit to the police for the rescue even though it seems like the police bumbled this case up pretty good.

If that was the one with Greta, man he looked angry from the get go and high as a kite. Saw an interview with a spanish speaking woman who said he had nothing to do with the rescue at all and he was full of crap. Interesting little sideshow.

Yeah, it was the one with Greta. Didn't see the start, just caught the second half right before I went to bed.

Also saw the interview with the hispanic neighbors claiming they got to the house first.

He did, that's already been made public, even Ramsey said so originally. Ramsey said he heard the Hispanic guy and Amanda talking/yelling and went to see want was going on. The Hispanic guy was there first, but couldn't communicate with Berry. That's when Ramsey showed up and helped free her and call police.

So, yes they both were there, and both helped saved these women.

The cops did the usual. Swept all responsibility under the rug, and took credit for everything.:yuck:

Ok...?

Thanks for confirming what I have known for a while now...

Except that's not what the Hispanic people said in the interview. They said Ramsey had nothing to do with breaking the door open at all and only arrived after the fact.

I think they just get overwhelmed by so much of the population acting like 🤬. Anything's possible, but yeah, that was helluva lot of red flags!

I remember Ramsey talking about another guy there, but how he's trying to take credit for the rescue although he got scared & took off? Not saying who's telling the truth, but sounds like this person Ramsey was referring to must be one of the Non-English speakers.

Castro was indicted on over 300 counts today by a grand jury. He faces one count of aggravated murder for forcing one abortion on a unwilling woman, 139 counts of rape, 177 counts of kidnapping, 7 counts of gross sexual imposition, 3 counts of felonious assault and one count of possession of criminal tools for a total of 329 charges.

These charges stem from a period of August of 2002, when the first woman was kidnapped, to February of 2007.

“[Friday’s] indictments represent a first major step in the criminal justice process,’’ said County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty. “Our investigation continues, and we will present our findings to the grand jury.’’

Castro will be arraigned next week, and the county's Capital Review Committee will decide if he is eligible for the Death Penalty once the indictments are complete.

I guess this is the legal closure to the case.

USA Today
Ariel Castro, the former Cleveland school bus driver who pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and abuse of three young women that went undetected for more than a decade, was sentenced Thursday to life imprisonment, plus 1,000 years, with no chance of parole. link

He probably got off easy. What he had to say:

Castro issued a brief apology at the onset of the hearing and later repeated it after a rambling statement in which he claimed, "I'm not a monster, I'm sick."

Heavily shackled and wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, the self-described pornography addict said he wasn't "trying to make excuses" for his criminal acts, but deferred blame for his actions on the victims and the FBI.

Castro claimed that "there was a lot of harmony" in his home among his victims.

Pathetic. Loser.

Thank goodness.

If I were him I'd beg for the death penalty though, I wouldn't have plead guilty. He's gonna have a pretty bad experience in whatever prison he goes to.

He also said the sex was consentual. I have no idea what possesses someone to behave that way.

After all, I have women flocking to my door and sleeping on my porch, no persuasions.

It really necessary to give him an entire millenium? I mean, what are the chances he'll be walking free in 3038?

When the Machine's want the most insane criminals from the past 1000 years? I agree, as a kid this use to make go "WOW!", when I'd see a life sentencing like this, but now I see it's more for show than anything and redundant.

It's to deter him from ever achieving a parole hearing (possibly after 20% of his sentence began, if good behavior).

Wow...glad this didn't turn into three years of waiting for some sort of justice for someone who confesses to his crimes.

I get that but still a 1000+ years...it could have been 200 or 250 years and he still wouldn't have had a shot at parole. Too bad he got a chance to bargain out of the death penalty, even though this pretty much is one...

Turning into someone's bitch in prison would be a better fate for him than death penalty.

No I'm still not American, despite using the "bitch in prison" term.

This exactly. There's no way in hell he's gonna be outside of that prison with a sentence like that!

And yes, great that this was swiftly done. The FIA could learn a thing or two from this.
